Halfway Flat Campground Introduce
For local users seeking a tranquil and more primitive "camping near me" experience along a beautiful river, Halfway Flat Campground near Goose Prairie, WA 98937, USA, offers a compelling option. Situated next to the gorgeous Naches River, this campground provides a peaceful setting for those looking to disconnect and immerse themselves in nature. You can reach them at (509) 653-1401 or their mobile number +1 509-653-1401 for inquiries, although keep in mind that reservations are limited.
Halfway Flat Campground is characterized by its quieter atmosphere and more rustic amenities. It's important to note that this campground does not offer showers or electric hookups, embracing a more traditional camping style. With only 8 reservable sites and the remainder available on a first-come, first-served basis, planning your arrival, especially on weekends, is crucial. The proximity to the Naches River is a major draw, offering scenic views and the soothing sounds of flowing water. However, potential visitors should be aware of certain conditions, such as the river's flow rate which may not always be suitable for swimming.
Environment and Setting:
The environment at Halfway Flat Campground is defined by its riverside location and the surrounding natural beauty of the Goose Prairie area. The Naches River, described by visitors as "gorgeous," is a prominent feature, offering a picturesque backdrop and a calming auditory experience as you fall asleep. The campground appears to offer good shade and spacing between the campsites, enhancing the sense of privacy and comfort within the individual areas. The presence of a sandy "beach" inlet, though potentially used when camp hosts are absent and the river is less swimmable, suggests areas for closer river access.
The surrounding area seems to be popular for off-road vehicle enthusiasts, as one reviewer noted the presence of "off road vehicles buzzing about," particularly on weekends. This indicates the potential for nearby trails that cater to this activity, which might be a positive or negative aspect depending on your preferences for peace and quiet versus access to such recreational opportunities. The long gravel road leading to the campground is another environmental factor to consider, advising against bringing vehicles with very low ground clearance.
Wildlife is also a part of the environment at Halfway Flat Campground. The presence of "lots of ground squirrels" necessitates careful food storage to prevent them from becoming a nuisance. Additionally, bees can be "VERY annoying when trying to eat," a common occurrence in many outdoor settings, particularly during warmer months. The lack of cell service for T-Mobile users, with service only returning near Yakima, further emphasizes the remote and natural setting of the campground, offering a true escape from digital connectivity.
Services and Amenities:
Halfway Flat Campground offers a more primitive camping experience, as indicated by the absence of showers and electric hookups. The presence of vault toilets is confirmed, and remarkably, a reviewer described them as "THE CLEANEST BATHROOMS I HAVE EVER BEEN IN!!!" and noted "NO BAD SMELLS AT ALL!!!" This exceptional cleanliness of the restroom facilities is a significant and noteworthy amenity for a campground of this type.
The campground provides individual campsites, with 8 being reservable and the rest available on a first-come, first-served basis. These sites offer "good shade and space between," suggesting a degree of comfort and privacy within the limited number of sites. While not explicitly stated, it's reasonable to assume the presence of basic amenities such as picnic tables and fire rings or designated campfire areas at each campsite. Access to drinking water is typically a standard provision at campgrounds, although the source and availability at Halfway Flat Campground are not detailed in the provided reviews.
The mention of camp hosts who had not yet arrived during one visitor's stay suggests that hosts are typically present, which can be beneficial for assistance and information. The use of the sandy "beach" inlet in their absence implies some level of informal access to the river might be available. However, the river itself was noted as moving "pretty fast and not swimmable" during the week of June 13-19, indicating that river conditions can vary and may not always be suitable for swimming.
Features and Highlights:
The standout features of Halfway Flat Campground include its quiet atmosphere, its location directly next to the "gorgeous" Naches River, and the surprisingly clean vault toilets. The limited number of campsites (only 8 reservable) contributes to the quieter and more intimate camping experience. The good shade and spacing between sites enhance comfort and privacy.
For those interested in off-road activities, the proximity to trails that attract off-road vehicles, particularly on weekends, could be a significant feature. However, for those seeking absolute peace and quiet, this might be a consideration when planning a weekend stay. The lack of cell service for some providers (at least T-Mobile) can be seen as a feature for those wanting a true digital detox and immersion in nature.
The river itself, while not always swimmable, offers scenic beauty and the soothing sounds of flowing water, which many campers find relaxing. The presence of ground squirrels and bees are part of the natural environment and something to be aware of when storing food and eating outdoors.

Important Considerations:

- Limited Reservations: Only 8 sites can be reserved; the rest are first-come, first-served. Arriving early, especially on weekends, is advisable.
- River Conditions: The Naches River may not always be suitable for swimming due to the current.
- Off-Road Vehicle Noise: Be prepared for potential noise from off-road vehicles, particularly on weekends.
- Wildlife: Secure food properly due to the presence of ground squirrels, and be aware of bees, especially while eating.
- Road Conditions: A long gravel road leads to the campground, so low-riding vehicles may not be suitable.
- Cell Service: Expect limited or no cell service, especially for T-Mobile users.
Conclusion:
Halfway Flat Campground offers a unique "camping near me" experience for those seeking a quieter, more primitive escape along the scenic Naches River near Goose Prairie. Its exceptionally clean vault toilets are a notable and welcome feature. While the lack of showers and electric hookups and the potential for off-road vehicle noise on weekends are factors to consider, the natural beauty, riverside location, and limited number of sites contribute to a more intimate camping experience. For local users comfortable with rustic amenities and seeking a peaceful retreat (especially during the week), Halfway Flat Campground is worth considering. Remember to plan your arrival carefully due to the limited reservable sites and the first-come, first-served policy for the remainder.

Halfway Flat Campground Reviews
Great quiet campground. No showers, no electric..kind of primitive. Only 8 sites are reservable the rest is first come first setup basis. River was gorgous....THE CLEANEST BATHROOMS I HAVE EVER BEEN IN!!! NO BAD SMELLS AT ALL!!! Lots of ground squirrels so hide your food!! Bee's were VERY annoying when trying to eat but that is camping life. Long gravel road so don't drive a really low riding vehicle! Not a lot of swimming holes but a few nice ones! No cell service at all for us T-Mobile users. Did not get service until we went into Yakima.
Jul 30, 2018 · Angela KrebsLovely little campground next to the Naches river. I gave it only 4 stars as I'm not into off road vehicles buzzing about. That said, during the week, there were none, but on the weekend...wowzers. If you're into that kind of thing, I guess there are lots of trails going up into the backwoods. Only 8 sites, with good shade and space between. No hookups. Vault toilets. The camp hosts had not yet arrived, so we used thier sandy "beach" inlet. Otherwise, the river was moving pretty fast and not swimmable. We were there the week of June 13-19.
Jun 27, 2021 · Kimberly VickeryWe love this campground, the road is a bit rough to get back into it, but it’s well spread out and so peaceful!
Jun 24, 2024 · Gabriella VigreWe were there Day after Labor Day. Bad timing and actually understandable garbage bins full and overflowing and campsites could of used some cleaning definitely. Alot of hornets. I got stung on my hand and a hornet fell in my husband beer can that he was drinking. He is a lucky man because he has reactions to their bites. He felt it in his mouth and spit it out instantly without getting bite! Unbelievable! If cleaned up and issues with hornets gone it's a nice little campground. PS Restrooms clean
Sep 05, 2024 · Candice LewisClean campground. 10.00 per night. Three sites are first come. Large garbage cans. A mile or so of gravel to camp. River is within 100’ of each site.
