Hardwood Campsite On Grand Island

F8R8+9R, Munising, MI 49862, USA

Great campsite that is far enough from the main trail that you won't see it hear anyone. Waterfall Beach is close by and drinking water and free firewood is available about a half mile south near the group campground. The site has an outside pit toilet, bear bin that holds multiple backpacks, two benches, fire pit with grill, and a bear pole to hang food. Very easy flat hike from the ferry. The only thing that would make it better would to have a veiw of the lake. - Michael Calabro

Hardwood Campsite On Grand Island Introduce

For local residents in the Munising, Michigan area, and those searching within the "camping near me" category for a more secluded and backcountry camping experience on Grand Island, Hardwood Campsite offers a well-equipped option. Located at F8R8+9R, Munising, MI 49862, USA, this campsite is praised for its relative isolation from the main trail, ensuring a peaceful and private retreat. While it doesn't offer lake views directly from the site, its proximity to other natural attractions and essential amenities makes it a noteworthy choice for local adventurers.

The environment of Hardwood Campsite on Grand Island is characterized by its seclusion and natural woodland setting. Being "far enough from the main trail that you won't see it hear anyone" suggests a high degree of privacy and tranquility, ideal for local users seeking to escape the more crowded areas. The campsite is also conveniently located close to Waterfall Beach, although the exact distance is not specified. The availability of drinking water and free firewood about a half mile south, near the group campground, is a significant environmental consideration, requiring a short hike but providing essential resources. The fact that the hike from the ferry to the campsite is described as "very easy flat" makes it accessible for a range of local campers, including those who might be new to backcountry camping.

In terms of services and features, Hardwood Campsite is well-appointed for a backcountry site. It includes an outside pit toilet (privy) for sanitation. For food storage and safety, the campsite has a bear bin that is large enough to hold multiple backpacks, providing ample space to secure provisions. Campers also benefit from the presence of two benches for seating and a fire pit equipped with a grill for cooking. Additionally, a bear pole is available for hanging food, offering an alternative method for keeping food away from wildlife. The provision of free firewood nearby (though not directly at the site) is a valuable service offered by the managing authority, likely the National Park Service or Forest Service, which oversees Grand Island.

The features of Hardwood Campsite include its secluded location, enhancing the sense of privacy and immersion in nature. Its proximity to Waterfall Beach offers an opportunity to enjoy a scenic natural attraction. The easy, flat hike from the ferry makes it relatively accessible for backcountry camping. The inclusion of essential amenities like a bear bin, privy, benches, and a fire pit with a grill ensures a degree of comfort and convenience in a wilderness setting. The availability of drinking water and firewood within a short distance (half a mile south) addresses two critical needs for backcountry campers. While the lack of a direct lake view is mentioned as the only potential drawback by one reviewer, the overall features cater well to those seeking a well-equipped and private camping experience.

One reviewer noted that the campsite is located 3.75 miles in from the ferry dock, providing a more precise distance for local users planning their hike. The easy walk to a beach and the wood box (presumably the location of the free firewood) are highlighted as positive aspects. The reviewer also mentioned that while there is no water view from the campsite itself, a good spot to sit with a view is located just across the trail, suggesting that scenic overlooks are still easily accessible from the area.
