Looking for a camping experience that combines the tranquility of nature with the adventure of river activities within the "camping near me" category in Missouri? Cherokee Landing, located at 8344 Berry Rd in Bonne Terre, offers a unique blend of riverside camping and float trip opportunities. Based on enthusiastic customer reviews, this campground stands out for its friendly and accommodating owner, its private campsites directly on the riverfront, and its convenient services for enjoying the nearby waterway. Whether you're planning a last-minute getaway or a more extended outdoor adventure, Cherokee Landing provides a welcoming environment for campers and water enthusiasts alike.
One of the most consistently praised aspects of Cherokee Landing is the exceptional hospitality of the owner. Reviewers describe the owner as "so friendly and accommodating," highlighting a personal touch that enhances the overall camping experience. This welcoming attitude is particularly beneficial for those making spontaneous plans, as one reviewer noted their positive experience with a last-minute camp and float trip. The owner's willingness to assist and ensure guests have a pleasant stay is a significant draw for this campground.
The location of Cherokee Landing directly on the riverfront is another major highlight. Campers have the option to secure "nice and private" spots right by the water, allowing for easy access to the river and beautiful views from their campsites. This proximity to the river is ideal for those planning to engage in water activities such as kayaking or simply enjoying the soothing sounds of flowing water.
Speaking of water activities, Cherokee Landing facilitates float trips for its guests. While one reviewer mentioned that the river was unusually low during their visit, affecting their kayaking experience, they still emphasized that it was a "great trip" and expressed a desire to return when the river conditions are better for floating. This suggests that the river is typically suitable for kayaking and likely other types of float trips, making Cherokee Landing a prime destination for those seeking both camping and water-based recreation.
The campground offers a variety of campsite options to cater to different preferences. While some sites are nestled within the woods for a more secluded feel, others are located directly on the river or closer to the check-in area. For those requiring essential amenities, Cherokee Landing also provides spots with electric and water hookups, ensuring a comfortable stay for RV campers or those who prefer some modern conveniences while camping.
For visitors bringing their own kayaks or canoes, Cherokee Landing offers a convenient shuttle service. One reviewer specifically mentioned paying for a shuttle to transport their own kayak, indicating that the campground supports independent float trips by providing transportation to put-in points on the river. This service adds significant value for those who prefer to use their own equipment but need assistance with logistics.
Accessibility to the water is another key feature of Cherokee Landing. The boat landing with direct access to the river is conveniently located right by the campsites, making it easy for campers to launch their kayaks or other watercraft. This seamless integration of camping and river access is a major advantage for those looking to make the most of their time on the water.
Basic necessities are also readily available at Cherokee Landing. Firewood can be purchased at the lodge, ensuring campers can easily enjoy a campfire during their stay. Additionally, for any other needs such as drinks or food, local stores are conveniently located just a short drive down the road. This proximity to local amenities strikes a good balance between the peacefulness of camping and the convenience of having essential supplies within easy reach.
The location of Cherokee Landing near the highway bridge offers another advantage: it provides a camping experience that feels connected yet not too remote. Campers can enjoy the natural setting without being too far removed from civilization and essential services. This accessibility can be particularly appealing for those who appreciate the convenience of nearby towns and thoroughfares.
It's important to note a minor detail mentioned by one reviewer: while they brought their own camping grill, their specific campsite did not have one provided. This suggests that while some amenities are available, campers might need to bring certain equipment depending on their needs. It would be advisable for potential visitors to inquire about the specific amenities available at their chosen campsite when making a reservation.
Pet owners will also appreciate Cherokee Landing's welcoming policy towards dogs. One reviewer mentioned that the owner was okay with them bringing their dog on the float trip, indicating a pet-friendly approach that allows visitors to enjoy their outdoor adventures with their furry companions. It's always recommended to confirm specific pet policies and any associated rules with the campground beforehand.
In summary, Cherokee Landing offers a compelling combination of riverside camping and convenient access to float trips in a welcoming and well-located setting near Bonne Terre, Missouri. The friendly and accommodating owner, private riverfront campsites, kayak shuttle service, and proximity to both the river and local amenities make it an attractive option for those seeking a blend of relaxation and outdoor adventure within the "camping near me" category. While specific campsite amenities might vary, the overall positive feedback emphasizes the enjoyable experience and the unique appeal of camping directly on the river with easy access to water activities. Cherokee Landing Reviews
The owner is so friendly and accommodating. We decided to have a last minute camp and float trip and the campground was nice and private right on river front. The river was low so our kayak dragged which is rare for a kayak which does to show the river conditions. Other than that a great trip. I'd def go back again to camp and if the river was higher, float too.
Jun 24, 2024 · Amber StarnsCamp grounds and float was great. Wasn't super packed, the owner let us get a spot tucked in some woods. They also have spots right on the river, or closer by the check in, there are spots with electric and water. The owner was friendly, and was okay with bringing our dog on the float. We brought our own kayak and paid to have them shuttle. The boat landing with access to the water is right by camp sights, and you can buy wood for the night at lodge. Also if you do need to buy any drinks, food, etc then all local the stores are just right down the road. This place is close to the highway bridge so it's nice to be camping but not too far out. Fair warning, we brought our own camping grill, but they didn't have one at our site.
Jun 30, 2024 · Doug Stroer (Utopian Dream)This is a lot of Fun and very relaxing - especially in the Summer when it is hot. When I have visitors from out of Town I take them on this fun excursion. Come prepared - bring lots of Water (and other Beverage's) and snacks. One year when my Mom came to visit from Germany I of course took her down the River :) - We had such a great time and laughed a lot. From time to time she mentions what a great time she had. Unfortunately I moved out of the area so I was only able to take her once. I can really recommend this especially if you have visitors from out of Town. Please don't litter and leave your Garbage behind.
Aug 05, 2022 · Terence HillSpent the weekend at the campground. The surroundings, and the privacy, and the fact that it wasn't super busy this weekend, the friendliness of the owners and staff, the fact that we didn't have to pay a quarter for a shower, the distance from the campsite to the water (a few steps) all made this a five star experience. I love this campground. My only complaint is the depth of the river for our float (which is NOT controlled by the campground, that's mother nature) made the float really long. There were two points where there were trees all the way across the river, so we had to drag the kayaks, again, mother nature. I'm sure if you went around a time of high water, the float would be magnificent. The bluffs are really beautiful, and IMHO are way prettier than other float rivers. And the fact that there were so few people on the river made it kinda nice. More peaceful. The bathrooms could use a power washing and maybe some pest control (spiders) but all in all, for a campground that's been here since 1966, on a lonely stretch of old cut off highway, this is the one. This is our go to getaway. Next time, we won't do the float, just camp and swim, but the swimming area is absolutely top notch. Plus, no shoal runners or boats, so the water is super clear and clean! We love you Cherokee Landing!!!
