Opossum Creek Recreation Area Introduce
Are you a local resident in the Shelbyville, Illinois area searching for the perfect "camping near me" experience? Look no further than Opossum Creek Recreation Area. Based on visitor feedback, this campground offers a blend of spacious campsites, beautiful lake views, and a peaceful environment, making it an attractive option for a variety of campers. As a Corps of Engineers (COE) campground, it often boasts well-maintained facilities and access to natural resources. Let's delve into the details that make Opossum Creek Recreation Area a noteworthy choice for your next outdoor adventure.
Spacious Campsites with Options: One of the immediate advantages of Opossum Creek Recreation Area is the availability of "nice wide campsite." This feature ensures that campers have ample space for setting up their tents, parking their RVs, and enjoying the area around their site without feeling cramped. Furthermore, the campground offers variety in terms of hookups, with some sites equipped with "full hookups" (FHU). Full hookups typically include connections for water, electricity, and sewer, making these sites particularly convenient for RV campers who prefer the comforts of home while on the road. The availability of both standard and full hookup sites caters to a broader range of camping needs and preferences.
Scenic Tent Sites with Lake Views: For those who prefer tent camping, Opossum Creek Recreation Area offers a special treat: "Tent sites have great lake views." Waking up to the serene sight of a lake can significantly enhance the camping experience, providing a picturesque backdrop and a sense of tranquility. These lake-view tent sites likely offer easy access to the water, allowing campers to enjoy the beauty of the lake and potentially engage in activities like fishing or simply relaxing by the shore. This combination of natural beauty and the simplicity of tent camping makes Opossum Creek an appealing destination for those seeking a more immersive outdoor experience.
A Tranquil and Family-Friendly Atmosphere: The reviews highlight a "nice quiet campground" atmosphere at Opossum Creek Recreation Area. This is a significant draw for campers who are looking to escape the noise and bustle of everyday life and enjoy a peaceful retreat in nature. The quiet environment suggests that the campground is well-managed to ensure a relaxing experience for all visitors. Additionally, the presence of a "nice playground" indicates that Opossum Creek Recreation Area is also family-friendly, providing a dedicated space for children to play and enjoy themselves, making it a suitable destination for families with young kids.
Considerations for Navigation and Access: While the campground itself receives positive feedback, one reviewer provided important advice regarding navigation. They cautioned against following GPS directions, as it might lead to "route 5, which is a small, bad road." Instead, they recommended taking route 128 to county road 1650 (note the correction from 1600) and following the signs to the campground. They noted that even county road 1650 is "not very good either, but it is only a 1/2 mile." This information is crucial for local users, especially those with larger vehicles like motorhomes, to ensure a smoother and safer arrival at Opossum Creek Recreation Area. Paying attention to these specific directions can save time and frustration.
Quality of Bathrooms: A Point of Caution: While the campground generally receives positive remarks, one reviewer found the "bathrooms ... directly across but are very uninviting, and I did not use them." This is a point of consideration for potential visitors who rely on campground restrooms. While this is just one person's opinion, it suggests that the condition or aesthetics of the bathrooms might be a drawback for some. It's worth noting that COE campgrounds often have functional but sometimes basic facilities. If clean and inviting restrooms are a high priority for your camping trip, this is something to keep in mind and perhaps inquire about if possible.
Corps of Engineers Campground Standards: The reviewer's comment, "Like most COEs this is a really nice campground," provides some general insight into the standards often associated with campgrounds managed by the Corps of Engineers. COE campgrounds are frequently located near lakes or other water resources and are known for their natural settings and generally well-maintained infrastructure. This positive association suggests that Opossum Creek Recreation Area likely benefits from the management practices and standards typical of COE facilities, often focusing on providing access to outdoor recreation in a well-organized manner.
Convenience of Full Hookups for RVers: For RV travelers, the availability of full hookup sites at Opossum Creek Recreation Area is a significant convenience. Having access to water, electricity, and sewer connections allows for a more comfortable and extended stay without the need to frequently empty tanks or conserve resources. The reviewer who stayed in site 51, a FHU site, noted that it was "small pea gravel, level and wide," indicating a well-prepared and comfortable space for their motorhome. The levelness of the site is particularly important for RVs to ensure proper functioning of appliances and overall stability.

Opossum Creek Recreation Area Reviews
Nice wide campsite, some with full hookups. Tent sites have great lake views. Nice quiet campground. Nice playground.
Aug 18, 2024 · Debbie WagnerLike most COEs this is a really nice campground. We were in site 51 which is a FHU site. The site is small pea gravel, level and wide. The bathrooms are directly across but are very uninviting, and I did not use them. I would not follow your GPS. It takes you on route 5, which is a small, bad road. Take 128 instead to county rd 1650 (not 1600) and follow the signs. That road is not very good either, but it is only a 1/2 mile. We camped at Opossum Creek Campground in a Motorhome.
Jul 19, 2022 · George DawsonOpossum Creek Recreational Area is near and dear to my heart so definitely one of my favorite places to be adventurous! It is beautiful in every season but it was extra pretty with snow and ice covering everything. We didn’t want to have to carry them home. Walking in several inches of snow is quite a workout! It was very windy by the lake! I loved walking in the snow this afternoon but I am so ready to get my paddle board on the water, look at all the campers in the campground and talk to the campers. The smell of bacon is amazing if you’re running in the campground.
Feb 03, 2022 · L GrabbA great experience of outdoor critters, and swimming, and fishing. I Love the public bathroom centered around the campsite up the road. Ppl were friendly and the green trees were beautiful with the sunlight peering through. Book early!! Fills up fast
