Coon Creek Recreation Area Introduce
For local users seeking an exceptional "camping near me" experience centered around lake recreation in central Illinois, Coon Creek Recreation Area, located at 2075 East Rd, Shelbyville, IL 62565, USA, presents a highly appealing destination. Situated directly on the shores of Lake Shelbyville, this campground offers a unique blend of natural beauty and convenient amenities, as highlighted by enthusiastic customer reviews. You can reach them at (217) 774-3951 or +1 217-774-3951 for inquiries and reservations.
The environment surrounding Coon Creek Recreation Area is undoubtedly its prime attraction. Being located on Lake Shelbyville, a large and scenic reservoir, campers can expect breathtaking waterfront views and easy access to a wide range of water-based activities. One particularly noteworthy feature mentioned by a reviewer is that the "tent electric" only campsites offer access down to "our own private little beach" from which fishing was enjoyed throughout the day. This suggests a unique opportunity for a more secluded and direct connection with the lake for certain campers. The overall environment is described as "awesome" and "absolutely wonderful," emphasizing the natural beauty and tranquility of the location. The provided photographs taken by a visitor showcase the views from the tent down to Lake Shelbyville, further illustrating the scenic appeal of these particular campsites.
In terms of services and features, Coon Creek Recreation Area offers several notable amenities. The availability of "tent electric" only sites with private beach access and fishing opportunities is a unique feature that sets this campground apart. The campground also boasts a boat ramp, which is offered free of charge to camping guests, making it highly convenient for those wishing to bring their boats and enjoy Lake Shelbyville. The reviews also mention that the campground offers "multiple options to choose from when it comes to campsites," including "buddy sites where two people can share a site together, and it’s larger." This variety caters to different group sizes and preferences, providing flexibility for families and friends camping together. The check-in process is facilitated by "very nice people that work at the check in cabin," indicating a welcoming and helpful staff.
However, some practical considerations are also mentioned in the reviews. While the bathrooms are described as "clean and new," they currently lack showers. The nearest shower facilities are apparently located at a distance that is considered "a bit of a hike," especially after a long day of activities. This is an important factor for potential campers to be aware of, particularly those who prioritize easy access to showers. Additionally, while the boat ramp is free for campers, the return trip from the ramp back to the park or to retrieve a vehicle and trailer is also described as "a HIKE!" This suggests that while the boat launch is convenient, logistical planning for transportation to and from the ramp might be necessary.
Promotional information derived from the customer reviews is overwhelmingly positive, despite the noted limitations. The description of the campground as "awesome" and the positive experience of having a private beach for fishing are strong endorsements. The availability of a free boat ramp for campers is a significant promotional point for boating enthusiasts. The variety of campsite options, including the unique buddy sites, caters to a broader audience. The recommendation to "reserve online or download the reservation.gov app" and to carefully review campsite photos and descriptions empowers potential campers to find the site that best suits their needs, as the reviewers themselves "really enjoyed ours!" The enthusiastic statement, "We will definitely be going back to camp there again!!" along with the heartfelt "❤❤," serves as a powerful personal recommendation.
For local users searching for "camping near me" with direct access to Lake Shelbyville and unique features like private beach access at some tent sites, Coon Creek Recreation Area is a compelling choice. The free boat ramp is a significant advantage for those planning to enjoy boating on the lake. The variety of campsite options, including the larger buddy sites, makes it suitable for different group configurations. The clean and new bathrooms, while lacking showers on-site, indicate a commitment to hygiene. The welcoming staff at the check-in cabin further enhances the positive experience. However, potential campers should be prepared for a walk to the shower facilities and the potentially long walk back from the boat ramp.
To further enhance the introduction of Coon Creek Recreation Area on a "camping near me" platform, it would be beneficial to provide more specific details about the different types of campsites available (beyond "tent electric" and "buddy sites"), including any RV sites and their hookup options. Information about the distance to the shower facilities from various campsites would be helpful for planning. Details about other amenities within the campground, such as fire pits, picnic tables, water spigots, and any recreational areas besides the lake access, would also be valuable. High-quality photographs showcasing the private beach areas, the boat ramp, the different types of campsites, and the overall scenic beauty of the campground would significantly increase its appeal. Information about reservation procedures, fees, and any seasonal availability is also essential for potential visitors.
In conclusion, Coon Creek Recreation Area in Shelbyville, IL, offers an "awesome" and "absolutely wonderful" "camping near me" experience, particularly for those seeking direct access to Lake Shelbyville. The unique "tent electric" sites with private beach and fishing opportunities, along with the free boat ramp for campers, are significant draws. The variety of campsite options, including buddy sites, caters to different needs. While the lack of on-site showers at the tent electric sites and the potentially long walk from the boat ramp are points to consider, the overall positive feedback and the exceptional lake access make Coon Creek Recreation Area a highly recommended destination for local camping enthusiasts.

Coon Creek Recreation Area Reviews
Wow, what an awesome campground! My family and I stayed the weekend in the “tent electric” only sites, which offered us access down to our own private little beach that we were able to fish from all morning and evening.Bathrooms were clean and new; however, they should have added showers in them, as the next shower is a bit of a hike, “especially after a long day walking.”The boat ramp is free if you are camping, which we made use of during our time; however, again, be prepared for a hike back to the park or to pick up the truck and trailer. No joke, it’s a HIKE!They have multiple options to choose from when it comes to campsites, even buddy sites where two people can share a site together, and it’s larger.Reserve online or download the reservation.gov app and make sure to look at the photos of the campsites and read each location’s description before deciding. We really enjoyed ours! Photos taken are views from the tent down to Lake Shelbyville.
