Based on the available customer reviews, this two-loop campground provides a back-to-nature experience with limited modern amenities, making it an ideal choice for those looking to disconnect and immerse themselves in a natural setting. Potential visitors should be aware of the specific conditions and amenities offered to ensure it aligns with their camping preferences.
The environment at Possum Creek Campground is described as a place to "really want to get away from the modern world," emphasizing its natural and somewhat remote setting. The campground consists of two loops with "well shaded spots on the northern loop," suggesting a comfortable and cooler camping experience during warmer months. The presence of shade is a significant advantage for tent campers seeking respite from the sun. The campground is situated within walking distance of a "nice trail and a cpl ponds," offering opportunities for leisurely hikes and enjoying the local aquatic environment. This proximity to natural features enhances the appeal for those looking to explore the outdoors. One reviewer notes that the campground is "a little gem in Hidden Springs," highlighting its value as a natural escape within the state forest. While one of the loops backs up "awkwardly to a private residence," this appears to be on the northern loop. It's also noted that a residence across the road from the northern loop has been torn down and a new one is being built further back, suggesting that any potential visual or noise impact from nearby residences might be minimal. The overall environment is geared towards a more natural and less developed camping experience.
In terms of services, Possum Creek Campground offers basic amenities suitable for primitive camping. A significant point emphasized in the reviews is the absence of electric and water hookups at the campsites. Campers should be prepared for a no-frills experience in this regard. However, the campground does provide "well water to fill water jugs," ensuring a source of drinking water for visitors. Restroom facilities consist of "pit toilets," which are typical for more rustic camping areas. Additionally, the campground has a "dump station," which is a useful amenity for RV campers who might be utilizing the campground as part of a longer journey, although they will need to be self-sufficient in terms of power and water at their sites. The availability of these basic services allows for a more comfortable stay than true backcountry camping while still maintaining a connection with nature.
The features of Possum Creek Campground cater to those seeking simple outdoor recreation. It includes a "small play ground," making it somewhat family-friendly for those with young children who appreciate a basic play area. The presence of "horse shoe pits" offers a classic and enjoyable campground activity for all ages. The "nice trail and a cpl ponds within walking distance" are significant features for nature lovers and those who enjoy walking and exploring. The well-shaded spots, particularly on the northern loop, are a feature that enhances the comfort of the campsites. The campground's location within Hidden Springs State Forest provides access to the broader natural resources and potential activities offered by the state forest itself, although these are not detailed in the reviews. The emphasis on packing out what you pack in underscores the Leave No Trace ethos of the campground, encouraging visitors to respect and preserve the natural environment.
Promotional information is limited, but the positive descriptions from reviewers serve as implicit endorsements. The characterization as a "great place to camp a cpl nights if you really want to get away from the modern world" and a "little gem in Hidden Springs" highlights its appeal for those seeking a natural escape. The mention of well-shaded spots on the northern loop could be a promotional point during hotter months. The availability of a playground and horseshoe pits suggests a family-friendly aspect. However, potential visitors need to be fully aware of the lack of electric and water hookups, as well as the limited phone internet signal, to ensure their expectations align with the campground's offerings. The emphasis on packing out trash and enjoying the natural setting implicitly promotes responsible and environmentally conscious camping. For local users specifically looking for a more primitive and quiet "camping near me" experience, Possum Creek Campground's features and environment are their own promotion.
For local residents of Strasburg and the surrounding areas, Possum Creek Campground offers a convenient option for a rustic "camping near me" experience within Hidden Springs State Forest. Therefore, it is best suited for those who are comfortable with more primitive camping conditions and are seeking a genuine escape from modern conveniences. Possum Creek Campground Reviews
Great place to camp a cpl nights if you really want to get away from the modern world. Best to visit when the weather permits. Not much of an internet signal on the phone. No electric or water sites. Well water to fill water jugs and pit toilets on hand. Small play ground and horse shoe pits as well. There's a nice trail and a cpl ponds within walking distance. The residence across the road from Northern loop has been torn down as of Spring 2024. A newer house is being build but it's way back off the road. Current satellite view shows it. Pack out what you pack in and enjoy this little gem in Hidden Springs!
Jul 31, 2024 · Jason ParishLike many state and federal camping areas, Possum Creek consists of a couple of loops with sites along the sides. This is a two loop campground with well shaded spots on the northern loop. While well shaded, the north loop backs up awkwardly to a private residence. Water, pit toilets and a dump station. Some added perks including a small playground and horseshoe pit.
Dec 31, 2017 · B TippetsThis is a very quiet campground, the host are very friendly. The only thing is they need to put in a few sites that have electricity and water. I think this would bring more to the grounds.
Aug 12, 2023 · Fawn ThomasThe lady was very friendly and helpful. Her husband was rude did everything he could not to help. Even knowing my husband and I were stranded till our ride showed up. When our ride didnt show and we asked to pay to use his phone to call because we did not get reception he refused so my husband had to find his way to town. I got worried because it was after dark and he still wasnt back. So i made the only call I could from a non working phone 911. When I asked for the address he told me I was being ridiculous. My husband was on foot. They asked if they could call him if they found my husband he told them no. I cleaned the back camp areas as a thank you to the lady for being so kind. When my Mom called to check on me he told me i could go to the office and call just her so she doesnt call the cops. I have never been treated so badly. Nor been so scared that i was going to be stuck some where because I had no way to get out to get a hold of anyone.
