Tipsaw Lake Recreation Area Introduce
For those in the southern Indiana region searching for "camping near me" that offers a blend of remote tranquility and convenient accessibility, Tipsaw Lake Recreation Area in St Croix, IN 47576, USA, presents an appealing destination. Located in a forest setting, this recreation area has garnered positive feedback from nature lovers who appreciate its spacious campsites, abundant wildlife, and the welcoming attitude of the camp hosts. While one reviewer noted some temporary issues with bathroom and shower closures due to maintenance, the overall sentiment emphasizes the beauty, peace, and natural richness of Tipsaw Lake Recreation Area.
The environment of Tipsaw Lake Recreation Area is a significant draw for visitors. Described as feeling "remote but close to everything," it offers a sense of escape into nature without being too far removed from essential amenities or nearby attractions. The presence of "large sites tucked into forest land" suggests a camping experience characterized by privacy and immersion in a wooded setting. Nature enthusiasts will particularly appreciate the abundant wildlife, including "herds of deer" and "beautiful box turtles" (with a reminder to drive slowly to protect them). The area is also home to a diverse array of "more bird species than you can name," making it a paradise for bird watchers. This rich biodiversity and the peaceful forest environment create an ideal backdrop for a relaxing and nature-filled getaway.
Tipsaw Lake Recreation Area offers different camping options, including a "primitive camping loop (Dogwood)" that has been praised for being "well maintained, clean, accessible, and decent cell coverage." This is a notable feature, as primitive camping often implies a more rugged experience with fewer amenities and potentially limited connectivity. The fact that the Dogwood loop offers both a well-kept environment and reasonable cell service provides a good balance for those who want to disconnect in nature but still have some level of communication available. One reviewer specifically highlighted site 30 as a favorite spot within this loop.
The services provided by the staff at Tipsaw Lake Recreation Area are also frequently commended. Camp hosts are mentioned for going "out of their way to make you feel welcome and ensure a good stay," indicating a high level of hospitality and commitment to guest satisfaction. Additionally, the staff is described as "friendly and quick to deliver ice and wood," which are essential supplies for many campers. This efficient and helpful service contributes to a more convenient and enjoyable camping experience.
However, one reviewer did report a significant issue with the temporary closure of bathroom and shower facilities during their stay, citing a "supposed painter issue." The bathrooms were closed for 4 out of 7 days, and the showers were closed for the entire 7-day duration. The reviewer also noted "poor" communication regarding this issue, which they attributed to the management company. While acknowledging this significant inconvenience, the reviewer still emphasized the "beautiful place for peace and quiet and being in nature," highlighting that the natural attributes of the recreation area outweighed this temporary service disruption. It is important for potential visitors to be aware that such maintenance issues can occasionally occur in any recreation area, and it might be prudent to inquire about the status of facilities when making reservations or upon arrival.
Despite the temporary inconvenience with the facilities, the overall appeal of Tipsaw Lake Recreation Area as a place for "peace and quiet and being in nature" remains strong. The reviewer's sentiment that it is "really hard to find places like this anymore" underscores the value of its remote feel, natural beauty, and abundant wildlife. This suggests that for those prioritizing a tranquil escape into a rich natural environment, Tipsaw Lake Recreation Area offers a valuable and increasingly rare experience.

Communication was poor but that is on the management company FINE. Beautiful place for peace and quiet and being in nature. Really hard to find places like this anymore.
May 17, 2023 · Carol HoughBeautiful, moderate loop with lake views. We did run into a couple of uncontained Great Pyrenees that caused us to turn around at the far southwest end of the lake so we didn't make it to the beachside of the lake. We were hiking with our dogs and didn't want to risk an interaction.
Dec 18, 2023 · Rhonda BrutscherBathroom and shower house was really clean. Camp host was kind of a rip.
Nov 03, 2024 · Jesse StephensSite is fantastic. Clean, quiet, with great amenities. Shower houses are probably the nicest and cleanest I've seen it in the National Forest service property outside of a hotel. Lake is a little weedy and you're going to want to shower off afterwards but luckily they have beachside showers. Did not get to explore the trails thoroughly but they seemed well maintained.
