Let's delve into what this campground offers.
Environment: Natural Beauty and Recreational Opportunities
The environment surrounding Harrison State Forest Ronsheim Campground is characterized by the lush woodlands and scenic landscapes typical of the region. Reviewers mention the presence of "several horse/hiking trails around," indicating that the area is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy exploring on foot or horseback. The campground is also a "short walk to the dam/lake," where visitors have spotted "some good size fish," suggesting opportunities for fishing and enjoying the water. The presence of "wild blackberries" adds a touch of natural foraging potential during the right season, and sightings of "galloping deer" highlight the local wildlife.
The state's efforts in maintaining the area, evidenced by the "kudos to the state for all the mowing," contribute to a more pleasant and manageable camping environment. While one reviewer noted an issue with generator noise from another camper, the overall ambiance seems to be one of natural tranquility, with the sounds of nature often prevailing.
Services and Features: Free Camping with Basic Amenities
A significant draw of Ronsheim Campground is that it offers "seven free camp spots to choose from." This makes it an exceptionally economical option for those looking for "camping near me" without incurring camping fees. The campground provides some basic amenities, including a "water pump" (noted as not drinkable), "trash cans," "paved sites," "clunky picnic tables," and a "vault room" (likely a vault toilet). The concrete pads for the campsites are mentioned, which can be beneficial for setting up tents or parking vehicles.
It's important to note, as mentioned by a reviewer, that the sites might not be perfectly level, and the restroom facilities are vault toilets. However, given that the camping is free, these basic provisions are often considered acceptable trade-offs for the cost savings and the natural setting. The availability of paved sites can also be an advantage for stability and keeping camping areas cleaner.

Harrison State Forest Ronsheim Campground Reviews
Seven free camp spots to choose from. It's a holiday weekend and 5 more empty spots. There is a water pump but not drinkable, trash cans, paved sites, clunky picnic tables, vault room. Short walk to the dam/lake where some good size fish chill out. Several horse/hiking trails around. Kudos to the state for all the mowing. Only stayed one night due to the person with the generator that sounded like a freight train. Lots of wild blackberries and galloping deer.
Jul 02, 2023 · Debbie Drives and TravelsVery nice! 7 spots. Free camping. Horseback riders come totting by. Small damed lake. Concrete pads. Downside, not very level and vaul5 toilets, but it's free, so you can't complain.
Aug 12, 2023 · Kelly KugelOkay so for a free camp site it really was just fine. Looks like a nice place to stay and fish too. I camped one night. I just have to say that the bathroom is almost unusable. It is disgusting, the stall doors don't work or lock, there's hornets nesting and flying around in there, and the smell is atrocious. I think this is a good spot, but I'd recommend testing out your new camping compost toilet if you go...
Apr 23, 2024 · Lydia “El” DobkowskiVery Nice Free Primitive Camping. Driveway/TrashCan/ Fire Pit/ Picnic Table/Rest Room. 7 Lots Here with Each Lot having the Same Amenities. 4 Miles from Downtown Cadiz,Ohio.
Aug 17, 2022 · Pastor William AlbrechtPit toilet near overflowing and no idea who to contact. No flat ground for tents. Water not drinkable and sign not clearly posted near water source. Feels like no care goes into this place short of the grass getting cut maybe once every two weeks if that. Mosquitoes are horrible!
