Hickey Gap Campground Introduce
For local users in the Chatsworth, Georgia area seeking "camping near me" that offers a more secluded and nature-centric experience, Hickey Gap Campground, located at 7001 Mill Creek Rd, Chatsworth, GA 30705, USA, presents an intriguing option. Based on the available customer reviews, this campground boasts a beautiful location alongside a brook leading to waterfalls, offering a limited number of first-come, first-served campsites and basic amenities. It's essential for those considering Hickey Gap Campground through the "camping near me" platform to understand its environment, services, features, and accessibility to determine if it aligns with their camping preferences.
The environment surrounding Hickey Gap Campground is consistently praised for its natural beauty and tranquility. One reviewer described it as a "very good hidden gem for Ga," suggesting a location that is somewhat off the beaten path and offers a serene escape. The campground's proximity to a brook that "leads to the falls" is a significant environmental feature, implying the soothing sounds of flowing water and the potential for scenic hikes to nearby waterfalls. For local users prioritizing a peaceful and picturesque setting when searching for "camping near me," Hickey Gap Campground appears to be a promising destination.
The limited number of campsites is a key characteristic of Hickey Gap Campground. Reviews indicate that there are "about 6-8 spots" available, and these are operated on a "first come, first serve" basis. This is important information for those planning a visit through the "camping near me" platform, as it suggests that reservations are not taken, and availability can be unpredictable, especially on weekends or during peak seasons. Arriving early may be crucial to secure a campsite. The small size of the campground likely contributes to its serene atmosphere, offering a more intimate camping experience compared to larger, more crowded facilities.
The campsites themselves are described as being "all by the brook," further emphasizing the natural setting and the potential for a relaxing ambiance. The presence of "Fire pits" at each site suggests that campers can enjoy campfires for cooking and warmth, a quintessential part of the camping experience for many. Additionally, "Picnic tables" are provided, offering a convenient space for meals and other outdoor activities. These basic amenities enhance the comfort of the primitive camping experience.
Regarding sanitation, Hickey Gap Campground offers a "compost outhouse." This indicates a basic, environmentally conscious approach to restroom facilities. While it provides a more sanitary alternative to digging a pit latrine, it may not offer the same level of convenience or comfort as flush toilets found in more developed campgrounds. Local users accustomed to modern restroom facilities should be aware of this when considering Hickey Gap Campground as a "camping near me" option.
Accessibility to Hickey Gap Campground is a significant factor highlighted in the reviews. Multiple campers mentioned that "The road is rough, be prepared." One reviewer noted being "shocked to meet as much outbound traffic as I did" even on a Sunday, implying that the destination is popular despite the challenging road conditions. This suggests that the allure of the location outweighs the difficulty of the drive for many visitors. Local users with vehicles that are not well-suited for rough terrain should carefully consider this before planning a trip to Hickey Gap Campground.
The timing of visits appears to influence the experience at Hickey Gap Campground. One reviewer found it "Very nice when we went during the weekday (Wednesday). Only one other camper and nobody on the trails. Very serene." This suggests that visiting during the week can offer a much quieter and more solitary experience compared to weekends, when outbound traffic indicates higher visitor numbers. For local users seeking a truly serene "camping near me" getaway, a weekday visit might be preferable.
The mention of "trails" suggests that Hickey Gap Campground provides access to hiking opportunities, further enhancing its appeal for outdoor enthusiasts. The fact that one reviewer found "nobody on the trails" during a weekday visit indicates that these trails might offer a peaceful way to explore the surrounding natural beauty. The proximity to waterfalls, as suggested by the brook leading to them, likely makes these trails particularly scenic.
Based on the available information, Hickey Gap Campground offers the following services and features:
- Campsites: Approximately 6-8 first-come, first-served sites located by a brook.
- Amenities: Fire pits and picnic tables at each site.
- Restroom Facilities: A compost outhouse.
- Natural Environment: Proximity to a brook leading to waterfalls, potentially scenic hiking trails.
- Atmosphere: Generally serene, especially during weekdays.
It is important to note the absence of certain amenities commonly found in more developed campgrounds, such as:
- Potable water sources (reviewers do not mention water availability).
- Electric hookups.
- Trash disposal (implied need to pack out trash).
- Designated parking areas (vehicles are likely parked at or near campsites).
No promotional information is provided in the reviews for Hickey Gap Campground. As a smaller, first-come, first-served facility, it is less likely to offer discounts or special packages. Its primary appeal lies in its natural beauty and the basic amenities provided at the campsites.
In conclusion, Hickey Gap Campground presents a compelling option for local users seeking a "camping near me" experience that prioritizes natural beauty and tranquility. Its location alongside a brook leading to waterfalls, coupled with the provision of fire pits and picnic tables at the limited number of campsites, creates an appealing primitive camping setting. However, potential visitors must be prepared for a rough road to access the campground, the first-come, first-served nature of the sites, and the basic compost outhouse facility. The serene atmosphere, especially during weekdays, and the access to potentially scenic trails make Hickey Gap Campground a "very good hidden gem" for those looking to escape into nature near Chatsworth.

I loved this location. I went down on a Sunday and was shocked to meet as much outbound traffic as I did. The road is rough, be prepared. The camp ground has about 6-8 spots ( first come, first serve). All by the brook that leads to the falls. Fire pits. Picnic tables.A compost outhouse.I can't wait to visit in the fall.
Sep 16, 2024 · MatthewVery nice when we went during the weekday (Wednesday). Only one other camper and nobody on the trails. Very serene and a very good hidden gem for Ga.
Apr 17, 2025 · Ethan TannerOnce you hit the gravel road it is easily a good 20-25 minutes all the way up to the top, if you go at a safe/slow rate of speed. Be wary of potholes, and blind curves. Campsites are first come, first serve and reasonably close together - no electric, no water hookups - one small outhouse that is kinda gross. Each site has a table and fire ring, along with a metal hook for hanging a lantern/light. In the spring and summer there are loads of snakes, and you have to watch out for the bright orange corn snakes who will happily swim up the creek/in the water with you. It's a beautiful place, very serene spot - no cell service for most carriers.
Jun 15, 2023 · Ray ChillThe location showing on Google is not correct. The location is about 1 mile south of the 630 intersection on W Cowpen Rd. If this is full, Lake Conasauga CG is a few miles north on the same road. This location on Google is also incorrect. Very nice CG with picnic tables, pit toilet and trash can. Be careful in the creek as I saw 3 copper heads.
May 13, 2023 · Bob PuckettBeautiful camping the weekend gets a little loud. A bear broke in to the trashcan but did not bother us. It was an over all nice 10 day camping trip. There are 5 site, camping is free, you can stay 14 consecutive nights. The bathroom can be a little dirty at times because people aren't always clean. There is a pad for the tent fire pits and table for each site.
