Hickory Hill Campground

Cumberland Island, St Marys, GA 31558, USA

3.0
This campsite and the Yankee Paradise campsite is just as described by the park. Nothing here except a bit of a clearing. It's a long hike from the ferry. There are LOTS of mosquitoes even in a relatively dry late October. There's a wetland nearby. I camped at Stafford Beach campground and enjoyed it. This was just a walk-thru to see if I ever wanted to camp here. Sorry, I'm not hard-core enough for this campground. - Cindy Belt

Hickory Hill Campground Introduce

For local adventurers seeking a truly immersive "camping near me" experience, Hickory Hill Campground on Cumberland Island presents a unique opportunity to connect with nature in its rawest form. Located at Cumberland Island, St Marys, GA 31558, USA, this campsite offers a primitive camping experience within the stunning natural landscape of a protected national seashore. You can reach them by phone at (912) 882-4336 or mobile phone at +1 912-882-4336 for inquiries, although direct booking might be handled through the National Park Service.

The environment surrounding Hickory Hill Campground is characterized by the wild and undeveloped nature of Cumberland Island. As a barrier island off the coast of Georgia, Cumberland Island boasts diverse ecosystems, including maritime forests, salt marshes, and pristine beaches. However, based on available information, Hickory Hill Campground itself is described as a basic clearing within this natural environment. Expect to be surrounded by the island's natural vegetation, which could include dense forests and potentially proximity to wetlands. This close proximity to nature means you'll likely encounter the island's wildlife, including various bird species and potentially other fauna native to the Georgia coast. The natural setting offers a chance to truly disconnect and experience the untamed beauty of a barrier island.

It's crucial to understand that Hickory Hill Campground offers a very primitive camping experience with minimal services. According to visitor reviews, the campsite is essentially a clearing with a sign indicating its location. Unlike more developed campgrounds, it appears that Hickory Hill does not provide amenities such as drinkable water, restrooms with flushing toilets or showers, picnic tables, or designated fire pits. Campers choosing to stay here must be entirely self-sufficient, bringing in all necessary supplies, including water, food, shelter, cooking equipment, and waste disposal bags. The lack of facilities emphasizes a back-to-basics camping approach, ideal for those seeking solitude and a deep connection with the natural environment.

The features of Hickory Hill Campground are primarily centered around its location within the Cumberland Island National Seashore. This provides unparalleled access to the island's natural attractions. While the campground itself may lack specific features, its location allows campers to explore the island's extensive hiking trails, observe diverse wildlife, and experience the stunning, undeveloped beaches. However, it's important to note that, based on visitor feedback, the beach may be a significant distance from the campground, potentially a mile away or more, and the terrain to reach it might be challenging, described as "impregnatable jungle" in one review. This suggests that accessing the beach from Hickory Hill requires significant effort and may not be suitable for all campers.

Based on the available reviews, there is no indication of specific promotional information or special offers for Hickory Hill Campground. As a primitive campsite within a National Park Service unit, fees and booking procedures are typically standardized and managed by the park service. It is advisable to check the official Cumberland Island National Seashore website or contact them directly for information regarding camping permits, fees, and reservation procedures for Hickory Hill Campground. Be aware that reservations are often required for camping within National Parks, and it's essential to plan well in advance, especially during peak seasons.

Given the primitive nature of Hickory Hill Campground and the feedback from previous visitors, it is essential for potential campers to be well-prepared for a wilderness camping experience. This includes bringing appropriate gear for self-sufficiency, such as a sturdy tent, sleeping bag, cooking equipment, water purification methods, insect repellent (especially considering reports of numerous mosquitoes), and navigation tools. Campers should also be aware of Leave No Trace principles to minimize their impact on the environment, including packing out all trash and respecting wildlife. It's crucial to research the specific regulations and guidelines for camping on Cumberland Island National Seashore before your trip.

In conclusion, for local users searching for "camping near me" and specifically seeking a rugged, primitive experience on Cumberland Island, Hickory Hill Campground offers a basic clearing within a stunning natural setting. However, potential campers must be fully aware of the limited to non-existent services and the potential challenges, such as distance to the beach, insect presence, and the need for complete self-sufficiency. While the island itself offers incredible natural beauty and opportunities for exploration, Hickory Hill Campground caters to a specific type of camper prepared for a true wilderness adventure. Consider exploring other campgrounds on Cumberland Island, such as Stafford Beach, which, based on one review, offered a more enjoyable experience with better facilities. Always consult the official National Park Service website for the most up-to-date information, regulations, and booking procedures before planning your camping trip to Cumberland Island.
