Stafford Beach Campground is situated on Cumberland Island, a stunning barrier island off the coast of Georgia, renowned for its undeveloped wilderness, diverse ecosystems, and historical significance. The environment surrounding the campground is characterized by:
- Pristine Beach Access: As the name suggests, Stafford Beach is a primary attraction, located just a short 0.2-mile hike from the campground. Reviewers rave about its beauty, offering opportunities for swimming, sunbathing, beachcombing, and long, solitary walks. The sound of waves crashing on the beach provides a soothing backdrop to the camping experience.
- Oak Tree Canopy: The campsites are nestled among majestic oak trees, providing ample shade and a picturesque setting. The large size of the campsites allows for accommodating multiple tents, making it suitable for families or small groups.
- Forest Sounds: At night, campers can immerse themselves in the natural soundscape of the forest, combined with the rhythmic sounds of the ocean waves, creating a truly tranquil atmosphere.
- Seclusion and Quiet: Reviewers note the peacefulness of the campground, with few children present during their visits and quiet fellow campers. The expansive beach allows for long walks without encountering many other people, offering a sense of solitude and connection with nature.
- Wildlife Encounters: Cumberland Island is home to diverse wildlife, including wild horses, deer, armadillos, and various bird species. While not explicitly mentioned in the context of the campground, campers should be aware of the potential for wildlife encounters and take appropriate precautions.
Despite its remote island location, Stafford Beach Campground offers essential amenities to ensure a comfortable and convenient stay for campers:
- Bathhouse with Potable Water: The bathhouse is a significant asset, providing potable water for drinking and other needs.
- Flush Toilets: The presence of flush toilets offers a level of convenience not always found in more primitive camping settings.
- Cold Showers: While the showers are cold, they provide a way to rinse off after a day of hiking or beach activities, which can be refreshing, especially in warmer weather.
- Inside Sinks: Indoor sinks in the bathhouse offer a convenient place for washing hands and personal hygiene.
- Outdoor Sink for Dishes: A dedicated outdoor sink simplifies the task of washing dishes, helping to keep campsites clean and organized.
- Plenty of Outlets: The availability of numerous outlets in the bathhouse allows campers to charge electronic devices like phones, which can be particularly useful given the limited cell service on the island.
- Bear Box: Each campsite is equipped with a bear box, crucial for safely storing food and scented items to prevent attracting wildlife. One reviewer found it spacious enough to store their entire backpack, highlighting its utility as a secure storage and staging area.
Stafford Beach Campground stands out due to its unique location and the specific experiences it offers:
- Island Camping Experience: Camping on a remote barrier island provides a sense of escape and immersion in nature that mainland campgrounds cannot replicate. The journey to the island itself (typically by ferry) adds to the adventure.
- Direct Beach Access: The close proximity to the stunning Stafford Beach is a major draw, offering unparalleled opportunities for beach-related activities and relaxation.
- Hiking Opportunities: Reaching the campground requires a 3.5-mile hike with all your gear, making it an appealing destination for those who enjoy hiking and are prepared for a moderate physical challenge. This also contributes to the campground's secluded and less crowded atmosphere.
- Secluded and Tranquil Setting: The combination of the island location, the hike-in access, and the observed quietness of fellow campers creates a peaceful and relaxing environment, ideal for those seeking an escape from the noise of everyday life.
- Essential Amenities in a Natural Setting: The provision of flush toilets, potable water, and showers in a relatively remote location offers a balance between wilderness camping and basic comfort.
Before planning a trip to Stafford Beach Campground, local users should be aware of the following:
- Hike-In Access: The 3.5-mile hike with all your camping gear is a significant factor to consider. Campers need to be physically prepared for this trek and pack accordingly, keeping weight and bulk to a minimum.
- Limited Phone Service: Cell phone service is described as "hit or miss," with at best 4G and one bar. Campers should not rely on consistent mobile communication and may want to inform others of their limited connectivity.
- Cold Showers: Be prepared for cold showers, as there is no mention of hot water availability.
- Ferry Transportation: Access to Cumberland Island is typically via ferry from the mainland (St. Marys). Campers will need to book ferry reservations in advance, considering the ferry schedule and any baggage restrictions.
- Park Regulations: Cumberland Island is a National Seashore, and there are specific regulations in place to protect its natural and historical resources. Campers should familiarize themselves with these rules, including guidelines on Leave No Trace camping, wildlife interaction, and permitted activities.
- Potential for Insects: Being a coastal wilderness area, there is a possibility of encountering insects such as mosquitoes and biting flies, especially during warmer months. Bringing insect repellent is highly recommended.
- Wildlife Precautions: While bear boxes are provided, campers should still be mindful of food storage and avoid attracting wildlife to their campsites.
While specific promotional offers are not mentioned, the unique attributes of Stafford Beach Campground serve as compelling reasons for local users seeking an exceptional "camping near me" experience:
- Unparalleled Beach Camping: Experience the beauty and tranquility of camping just steps away from a pristine, often secluded beach.
- Escape to Wilderness: Immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Cumberland Island, away from the crowds and noise of more developed areas.
- Adventure and Physical Challenge: Enjoy the rewarding experience of hiking to your campsite and exploring the island's natural wonders.

- Essential Comforts in a Natural Setting: Benefit from amenities like potable water, flush toilets, and showers while still enjoying a wilderness camping experience.

Stafford Beach Campground Reviews
Great camping! Bathhouse has potable water, flush toilets, cold showers, inside sinks, an outdoor sink to wash dishes, and plenty of outlets to charge your phone. Phone service is hit or miss, at best 4G with one bar. Campsites are big enough for several tents set among the oaks. The bear box is great for food but I also used it for my whole backpack and as a sort-of staging spot. At night you hear the forest sounds plus the waves crashing on the beach. While I was there the campers were quiet with few kids here. During my walks on the beach I literally walked a couple of hours without seeing anyone. As long as you can handle the 3.5 mile hike with a full load, it's a wonderful campsite.
Oct 29, 2023 · Cindy BeltThe most beautiful beach campground I have ever seen. Bring a hammock and a swimsuit! You won’t regret it. After setting up camp, hike about 0.2 miles to get to Stafford beach. Full faculties at this campground including restrooms and a shower. I found these facilities to be quite clean with regards to their locations.
Mar 18, 2020 · Aliza BrownIf you hike in to Stafford campground, you will appreciate the accommodations. There electricity and water but you MUST filter the water for drinking/cooking. There is no hot water but it is actually ok and refreshing after a long day of hiking. The best place to view the wild horses is just down the access road. The beach is awesome and peaceful. No crowds here probably because it is such an effort to get and stay here. All the campsites are nicely located with tree cover, fire rings and a choice of tent locations. Firewood can be hard to come by so be prepared to scavenge further from camp.
Oct 16, 2021 · Kelly MillerBring your bug spray on this camping trip, check yourselves for ticks multiple times daily. 3.5 mile walk from the ferry, potable drinking water on site, very clean showers and bathrooms, about a 10 minute walk to the beach. 6-8 mile hike to plum orchard.
May 16, 2023 · sean scottWe had a wonderful camping experience inspite of rain the first day, trails are marked, saw several horses and lots of armadillos
