Hitching Post Campground Introduce
Are you searching for the perfect camping experience in the picturesque region of Western North Carolina? Look no further than Hitching Post Campground, nestled in the charming town of Mill Spring. Conveniently located at 620 Girl Scout Cp Rd, this campground offers a tranquil escape while providing easy access to some of the area's most popular attractions, including the stunning Chimney Rock State Park and the beautiful Lake Lure.
For local adventurers seeking "camping near me," Hitching Post Campground presents an excellent choice. Its prime location ensures that you're never too far from the natural beauty and recreational opportunities that this region is renowned for. Imagine waking up to the sounds of nature, breathing in the fresh mountain air, and knowing that exciting day trips to iconic landmarks are just a short drive away.
While the campground owners are known for their friendly demeanor and helpfulness, it's important to have a complete picture of the facilities. Based on recent feedback, the bathhouse situation warrants consideration. Some visitors have noted that the bathhouse is unheated and open to the outside, which can lead to a chilly experience, especially during cooler weather. Additionally, concerns have been raised about the water temperature and the showerhead's spray. While cleanliness was generally acceptable, the absence of soap was mentioned. It's worth noting that the presence of a washer and dryer in the bathhouse area has been observed, potentially offering added convenience for longer stays.
However, beyond the bathhouse, Hitching Post Campground boasts several appealing features that make it a worthwhile destination for many campers. One of its standout advantages is its superb location. The campground's proximity to both Chimney Rock and Lake Lure is a major draw for those looking to explore these natural wonders. Furthermore, the convenience of having an Ingles supermarket nearby ensures that stocking up on essentials is a breeze.
For those seeking peace and quiet, Hitching Post Campground can be an ideal retreat, particularly during the weekdays when it tends to be less crowded. Visitors have consistently praised the tranquility of the environment, allowing for a truly relaxing camping experience. The camp host has also been commended for their exceptional hospitality, striking a perfect balance between attentiveness and respecting guests' privacy.
Nature enthusiasts will appreciate the charming walking trail that leads to a picturesque waterfall. This provides a wonderful opportunity for a leisurely stroll and a chance to immerse oneself in the natural beauty of the area. The presence of a small creek flowing through the campground adds to the serene ambiance and has been a hit with both children and pets. For those who enjoy angling, a catch-and-release fishing pond offers a pleasant way to spend some time.
Families considering Hitching Post Campground should be aware of the current condition of the playground. Recent feedback indicates that the play area is in need of some maintenance. Specifically, the plastic slide has been reported as bent and broken, rendering it unusable, and some of the wooden structures are showing signs of rot. If a well-maintained playground is a high priority for your camping trip, it might be prudent to consider this aspect. However, for campers without young children or those who prioritize other amenities and the location, this may not be a significant concern.
Despite the noted issues with the bathhouse and playground, the overall sentiment from many visitors is positive. The friendly atmosphere and the numerous appealing features, such as the location, quiet environment, walking trail, creek, and fishing pond, contribute to a pleasant camping experience. Many reviewers have expressed their intention to return to Hitching Post Campground in the future when visiting the Lake Lure and Chimney Rock area.
In summary, Hitching Post Campground offers a conveniently located and generally peaceful camping experience in close proximity to the popular attractions of Lake Lure and Chimney Rock. While the bathhouse and playground have received some critical feedback, the friendly owners, tranquil setting, access to nature trails and a fishing pond, and the convenience of nearby amenities make it a compelling option for local campers seeking a getaway in this beautiful region of North Carolina. Consider Hitching Post Campground for your next "camping near me" adventure and discover the charm of Mill Spring and its surrounding natural wonders.

Hitching Post Campground Reviews
The owners were friendly but I'm surprised reviews were mostly positive about the bath house. It's unheated and open to the outside so when a breeze comes through, you're shivering. The water didn't get hot and the shower head sprayed a fine mist, which made it feel even colder. The bathroom was pretty clean except for the ants but there was no soap to be found.
Apr 17, 2025 · MadisonGreat location. Close to Chimney Rock and Lake Lure. Had an Ingles very close by. We stayed during the week so we had the whole place pretty much to ourselves, which was nice. Very quiet! The Camp host was incredibly nice. He made sure everything was good without being obtrusive about it. We had full hook up so we didn’t use the bath house but it looked like it had a washer and dryer in it?. Pretty walking trail to a water fall, little creek that went through which the dog and kids loved. Little catch and release fishing pond was nice too. The only thing is that the kids play ground needs some TLC/ work. The slide (plastic) was bent and broken making it unusable- some of the wood on the play center is starting to rot. Other than the play area which if you don’t have kids, won’t matter. Everyone was very friendly and I would come back to stay again the next time we go to Lakelure/Chimney rock.
Jul 12, 2024 · Kimberly FarrierThis is the best camping spot! Everyone was so nice and welcoming. We felt extremely safe! The bath house was clean and the surroundings are gorgeous. We've never had such a fun time. The pond fishing was so nice. The frogs and crickets are all you can hear at bedtime. No one was loud or rude in anyway. We will be back every chance we get!
Aug 05, 2024 · Candice wratherWe recently stayed here and despite the rainy weather our stay was wonderful. The campground itself was quiet and serene with a cute stream running down the middle. It’s nestled in a quiet spot in the mountains; the perfect distance from lake lure and chimney rock. Bathrooms were neat and clean, and the showers were nice and hot. Wagz and his cat Momo were excellent hosts, and the other staff were also very nice and friendly. Overall it was a great place to stake our tent down and we hope to visit again in the future!!
Jul 27, 2024 · Bella LoganThe staff were very friendly and welcoming. It is in a beautiful area by near the lake and secluded enough that it is very quiet and peaceful. The owners were very helpful. The bathhouse was clean, and the sites were clear. We stayed at site 14 in a tent and it was by a creek, the sound of the water running was very peaceful. If by chance you need a store, there is an ingles market near by. A short drive from chimney rock state park. Very affordable rates as well. I would recommend this place.
