Sandhill Station Campground Introduce
Looking for a tranquil escape into nature right here in Southeast Wisconsin? Within the platform category of "camping near me," Sandhill Station Campground emerges as a potential destination for local outdoor enthusiasts. Situated at N5584 Mud Lake Rd, Lake Mills, WI 53551, USA, this campground offers a setting that has garnered both appreciation for its peaceful ambiance and some notes regarding its amenities.
Nestled amidst beautiful big oak trees, Sandhill Station Campground presents an environment that many find serene and quiet. One recent visitor in late August 2023 described their experience as "great, beautiful, quite, peaceful," highlighting the clean toilet facilities and the friendly host who was observed maintaining them. The convenience of firewood delivery upon request was also noted positively. Interestingly, this visitor also mentioned the pleasant surprise of encountering barely any mosquitos during their stay, which can be a significant factor for campers during certain times of the year.
However, it's important to consider a contrasting perspective shared by another camper. This review characterizes the campground as "small" with "beautiful big oak trees but not much else." A key aspect mentioned was that some sites are designated as "walk-in," requiring campers to park and walk to their chosen spot. This reviewer observed that some fellow campers were unprepared for this arrangement. Furthermore, concerns were raised about the size of the sites, the difficulty in discerning site characteristics from photos, and the lack of shade at their particular site, leading to an uncomfortably hot experience. The pit toilets were described as "the smelliest I have ever encountered while camping," and the "potable" water was reported to be of poor quality, discouraging its consumption. The only positive aspect noted by this reviewer was the short five-minute hike to the water.
Based on these varying experiences, Sandhill Station Campground offers a natural environment characterized by mature oak trees and a potentially peaceful atmosphere. For those who value tranquility and are prepared for a more rustic camping experience, it might hold appeal. The presence of clean toilet facilities, as reported by one visitor, is a definite plus. The friendly host and the service of firewood delivery also contribute to a positive experience.
However, prospective campers should be aware of the potential limitations and challenges highlighted in the other review. The "walk-in" nature of some sites requires preparation for carrying gear. The size and shade availability of individual sites may vary, making it crucial to inquire about specific site details when booking. The condition of the pit toilets and the quality of the potable water are significant factors to consider, and it might be wise to bring your own drinking water as a precaution.
The mention of a short hike to the water suggests some opportunity for enjoying the natural surroundings beyond the campsite itself. For those seeking a basic camping experience focused on nature, and who are equipped to handle potential inconveniences, Sandhill Station Campground could be an option, especially given its location in Southeast Wisconsin.

Sandhill Station Campground Reviews
Stayed here two nights on end of August 2023. Great experience, beautiful, quite, peaceful. Toilet was very clean, plenty of Toilet paper, seen host clean it twice while we were there. Host was very friendly. Fire wood delivered to us when we called. Surprisingly barely any mosquito. Will visit again.
Feb 14, 2024 · Aj KaiparattuSmall campground with beautiful big oak trees but not much else."Walkin" sites mean that you park and walk into the campground, had plenty of neighbors who were not prepared for this.Sites are small and difficult to choose based off the photos. Our site only had morning shade and was unbearably hot. There are pit toilets close by but were the smelliest I have ever encountered while camping."Potable" water was a disgusting shade of yellow and left a residue on our water bag. We did not risk drinking it.Small 5 minute hike to the water was the only part we enjoyed of the campground it self.We only booked this site as it was the last available in Southeast Wisconsin for our last minute camping adventure.
Aug 06, 2023 · Laura MichelLoved this place. There was someone in my camp site that I had reserved. Thank God there was another site I was able to book. Id recommend whoever oversees the site to look for stuff like that. I was able to get money from the individuals to make up what I spent. The sites are beautiful would have been nice to be able to drive in by the site to unpack, gates were locked. Try to get fire wood before you arrive, otherwise you'll have to scavenge some, and there is a nice big brush pile down towards the overflow lot.
Oct 03, 2021 · Travis AntoneNice little area for tent camping, you don't have to walk too far from the parking lot. My only gripe is that when you pick a spot, you can't really tell what you're getting from the website. Some spots have no shade at all, ours only had evening shade, some are more secluded than others, it's a good idea to take a walk around here first before making a reservation, especially with summer weather. There are vault toilets on site that are easy to get to. Site have picnic table and fire pit. There is no wood on site. I do understand that outdoors means mosquitos, but be prepared for an onslaught. Even with bug spray I still got about 2 dozen bites. We came during the week to avoid other campers.
Jul 28, 2021 · Crystal ReidingerSandhills station on Mud Lake is a beautiful camp ground, guarded by stately oak and beach trees this quiet spot is tucked away just barley out of reach of the lights of Lake Mills. It's is graced with much flora and fauna, a glorious example of central WI with a view of the Milky Way. On a weekday in the middle of summer you may be lucky enough to get the whole campground to yourself as I did. I enjoyed quite encounters with wildlife and an early morning chat with a birder wondering through. And of course the cranes the spot is named for are seen and heard from dawn till dusk.
