Hunter Peak Campground Introduce
For local residents seeking a serene "camping near me" escape in the Cody, Wyoming region, Hunter Peak Campground offers a charming and peaceful alternative to busier camping destinations. Located on Crandall Rd, Cody, WY 82414, USA, this campground has been praised by visitors for its beautiful riverside setting, quiet and secluded atmosphere, and friendly campground hosts. If you are looking for a tranquil retreat close to nature, and perhaps seeking a less crowded option when visiting the Yellowstone area, Hunter Peak Campground is worth exploring.
One of the most appealing aspects of Hunter Peak Campground, highlighted by multiple reviewers, is its picturesque environment. Situated "along the river," the campground offers the soothing sounds and scenic beauty of a flowing waterway. Riverside campsites often provide opportunities for activities such as fishing, wading, or simply relaxing by the water's edge. The natural ambiance of a riverside location can significantly enhance the camping experience, creating a peaceful and rejuvenating atmosphere.
Visitors have consistently described Hunter Peak Campground as a "very quiet and secluded spot." This is a significant advantage for those seeking a respite from the noise and crowds often associated with more popular campgrounds, especially those within National Parks. The sense of tranquility and privacy allows for a more immersive and relaxing experience in nature, where you can truly unwind and connect with your surroundings. The fact that one visitor found it a "very nice change of pace from the crowded National Park campgrounds in Yellowstone!" underscores its appeal as a peaceful alternative.
The experience of one visitor in August 2019, where there were "only 2 or 3 other groups staying here, along with the campground hosts," further emphasizes the uncrowded nature of Hunter Peak Campground, at least during certain times of the year. This low occupancy can contribute to a more intimate and serene camping experience, allowing for greater privacy and a stronger connection with the natural environment. For those who value solitude and a less communal camping atmosphere, Hunter Peak Campground appears to offer just that.
The friendly and helpful nature of the campground host, Dennis, was specifically mentioned by a visitor who stayed in the middle of June. They noted that Dennis was "very friendly with great tips for Yellowstone." A welcoming and knowledgeable camp host can significantly enhance a camping trip, providing valuable information about the local area, including nearby attractions like Yellowstone National Park, as well as ensuring a smooth and pleasant stay at the campground. The willingness of the host to share insights and recommendations can be particularly beneficial for visitors unfamiliar with the region.
The timing of the visits mentioned in the reviews provides some insight into the potential occupancy levels at different times of the year. An August visit reported very few other campers, suggesting it might remain relatively uncrowded even during the peak summer season. Similarly, a mid-June visit also reported very low occupancy, with only one other guest. This indicates that Hunter Peak Campground might offer a more secluded experience throughout much of the camping season, which can be a significant draw for those seeking peace and quiet.
While the reviews do not explicitly detail specific services and amenities beyond the presence of a camp host, the focus on the natural environment, quiet atmosphere, and friendly service suggests a more traditional and nature-focused camping experience. It's reasonable to expect basic campground amenities such as designated campsites, possibly picnic tables and fire rings, and potentially vault toilets, although these are not explicitly mentioned. The emphasis in the reviews is clearly on the quality of the natural setting and the peaceful ambiance, rather than extensive facilities.
Given its location near Cody, Wyoming, Hunter Peak Campground likely offers convenient access to the outdoor recreational opportunities available in the area, including hiking, fishing, and exploring the scenic landscapes surrounding Cody and the nearby Yellowstone National Park. Its quieter and less crowded nature could make it an ideal basecamp for those wishing to visit Yellowstone but prefer a more tranquil place to stay outside the bustling National Park campgrounds.

Hunter Peak Campground Reviews
Beautiful little campsite along the river. We visited in August of 2019 and there were only 2 or 3 other groups staying here, along with the campground hosts. It was a very nice change of pace from the crowded National Park campgrounds in Yellowstone!
Jun 15, 2022 · Isaac LandrusVery quiet and secluded spot. We were one of 2 guests in the middle of June. Camphost Dennis very friendly with great tips for Yellowstone.
Jun 17, 2023 · Jasper Kleine RammelkampStopped in before the summer rush. Beautiful riverside location not Far East of Cooke City. Very clean facility
Jun 15, 2019 · PHILIP FINKLEThis was a terrific little gem, just what we were hoping to find on our way into Yellowstone. Very quiet on our stay and the perfect mountain feel.
Aug 23, 2024 · GT junkieThis is a beautiful campsite right off the river. If you can, get a campsite that butts up against the river to ensure that you’re able to hear the roaring waters as you sleep. The people were friendly, and - though the services were somewhat limited - the bathroom was very clean. This is a very remote location without easy access to food or gas, so I would recommend coming prepared. Waking up the next morning for a drive through the Lamar Valley made the location worth it!
