Island Lake Campground

Co Hwy 612, Wetmore, MI 49895, USA

4.0
This campground was very serene and quiet. The sites all seemed large and had pretty good privacy. Our site had a little driveway leading into the main area which was convenient for parking cars (we had 3 lined up at one point) but did add a challenge for backing our 18(?) ft camper into the space. My only complaint was the upper loop had a nice cedar latrine but the lower loop where we were only had a port-a-potty, the plastic kind, with very little space. - Andrea Harthorn

Island Lake Campground Introduce

For local users in Michigan searching within the "camping near me" category, Island Lake Campground, located off Co Hwy 612 in Wetmore, MI 49895, offers a serene and quiet camping experience in the Upper Peninsula. Based on recent reviews from visitors, this campground provides spacious campsites with a degree of privacy, making it a potentially attractive option for those seeking a peaceful outdoor getaway.

The Serene and Relatively Private Environment

Island Lake Campground is consistently described as "very serene and quiet," indicating a tranquil atmosphere ideal for relaxation and enjoying the natural surroundings. The campground appears to be situated in a location that offers a sense of peace and escape from more crowded or noisy areas. The presence of "timbered trees" mentioned by one reviewer suggests a wooded environment, likely providing shade and contributing to the overall natural beauty of the area. This type of setting is often highly valued by those seeking a respite in nature.

Visitors have noted that "the sites all seemed large and had pretty good privacy." This is a significant advantage for campers who appreciate having their own space and a degree of separation from neighboring sites. The spaciousness of the sites can accommodate larger tents and gear comfortably, enhancing the overall camping experience. While not offering complete seclusion ("not quite full privacy between lots but comfortable enough"), the level of privacy seems satisfactory for most visitors.

One reviewer mentioned their site having "a little driveway leading into the main area which was convenient for parking cars (we had 3 lined up at one point)." This feature could be beneficial for groups traveling in multiple vehicles, providing designated parking space within the campsite. However, this driveway also presented a "challenge for backing our 18(?) ft camper into the space," indicating that while the sites are large, maneuvering larger trailers or RVs might require some skill or consideration of the specific site layout.

The clear evidence of "lively animal activity all around" is another aspect of the environment that appeals to nature lovers. While the specific types of animals are not detailed, it suggests a healthy and active local ecosystem, offering opportunities for wildlife observation (while maintaining a respectful distance).

Basic Services and Amenities

The user reviews provide some insight into the basic services and amenities available at Island Lake Campground. One reviewer noted a difference in the quality of latrine facilities between different loops of the campground. The "upper loop had a nice cedar latrine," which suggests a more permanent and potentially more comfortable structure. However, the "lower loop," where the reviewer stayed, "only had a port-a-potty, the plastic kind, with very little space." This discrepancy in restroom facilities is an important point for potential campers to consider, especially if they have a preference for the type of facilities available.

Another reviewer mentioned their lot being "far enough away from the vault toilet and dumpster to be comfortable, while close enough a night bathroom run won't bother you." This indicates the presence of at least one vault toilet (likely serving a larger area than a single campsite) and a dumpster for waste disposal. The location of these facilities relative to individual campsites appears to vary, with some sites offering a comfortable balance of proximity and distance.

The review also mentions that each spot had "a fire ring" and "a flat area large enough for a '6+ person' tent," indicating that basic amenities for tent camping and campfires are provided at each site. The presence of a fire ring is essential for many campers for cooking and enjoying evening campfires (subject to local regulations and fire risk levels).

The suitability for "car/tent camping while pulling a small boat" suggests that the campground offers some level of access to Island Lake, although specific boat launch facilities or parking for trailers are not detailed. Campers planning to bring a boat should inquire about these aspects when making reservations.

The phone numbers provided, (906) 387-2512 and +1 906-387-2512, are the best way for local users to obtain more detailed information about the specific amenities available at different campsites, including the type of restroom facilities in each loop, boat access, and any other services offered.

Features and Potential Activities

The primary feature of Island Lake Campground is its serene natural setting and proximity to Island Lake itself (implied by the name and the mention of boat camping). The quiet atmosphere and the privacy afforded by the spacious campsites are also significant draws.

Potential activities would likely revolve around enjoying the natural environment. Camping, tenting, and campfires are clearly supported. The possibility of bringing a small boat suggests opportunities for boating, fishing, or other water-based activities on Island Lake. The surrounding area of Wetmore in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is known for its natural beauty, which might include hiking trails, scenic drives, and opportunities for wildlife viewing beyond the campground itself.

The "timbered trees" mentioned by a reviewer add to the aesthetic appeal and might support local wildlife. The overall peacefulness of the campground suggests a relaxing environment for those looking to unwind and connect with nature.

Local users interested in specific activities such as hiking trails near the campground, fishing regulations for Island Lake, or the availability of boat launch facilities should inquire about these details when contacting the campground.
