Kelty Meadow Campground

40 mins drive from Oakhurst. Vaulted toilets. No water but there's a stream to collect water from for washing dishes. We brought up drinking water in 5 gallon jugs. Its a horse camp and cows free range here, so keep dogs tied up. The online reservation system is confusing. We ended up driving up and talked to the camp host at Soquel Campground nearby to get a campsite. There are double and single campsites. It was very quiet and peaceful when we went. - Asia Rose Lovett

Kelty Meadow Campground Introduce

For individuals seeking an authentic, peaceful, and more primitive outdoor experience under the "Camping Near Me" category, Kelty Meadow Campground in Wishon, CA, presents an ideal choice. Located within the vast expanse of the Sierra National Forest, this campground offers a back-to-basics approach to camping, appealing to those who appreciate quiet solitude and a strong connection to nature. The campground can be contacted at (559) 642-3212 or via mobile at +1 559-642-3212.

Environment and Location: Secluded Forest and Equestrian Charm

Kelty Meadow Campground is nestled deep within the Sierra National Forest, about a 40-minute drive from Oakhurst. This journey involves approximately 14 miles of road from Highway 41, with the initial 10 miles being paved and the latter 4 miles alternating between dirt and paved sections. While the road can be a bit challenging, requiring careful driving to avoid potholes, the reward is a truly peaceful and relaxing environment upon arrival. The address is Wishon, CA 93669, USA, which places it in a more remote, mountainous setting.

The campground is characterized by its quiet and serene atmosphere. Reviews consistently highlight the peacefulness, allowing campers to truly "feel yourself relax." It is surrounded by the natural beauty of the Sierra Nevada, featuring towering trees and an abundance of forest flora and fauna. A notable environmental feature is the presence of a stream within the campground, which, while not providing potable water, is available for collecting water for washing dishes and other non-drinking purposes. This creek adds to the tranquility and natural charm of the site.

Kelty Meadow is explicitly described as a "horse camp," meaning it's a popular destination for equestrian campers. Visitors should be aware that "cows free range here," indicating a rustic, open environment where livestock may be present. This necessitates keeping dogs tied up for their safety and to respect the free-roaming animals. The presence of these animals further enhances the rural and natural feel of the campground.

The elevation of the campground is typically higher than Oakhurst, contributing to a cooler and more refreshing climate, especially during the summer months. This higher elevation also offers a greater chance for wildlife viewing, although specific sightings are not guaranteed. The secluded nature of the campground helps minimize light pollution, making it an excellent spot for stargazing on clear nights.

Services and Amenities: Primitive Camping with Essential Conveniences

Kelty Meadow Campground provides a primitive camping experience, meaning campers should be prepared for a basic set of amenities and self-sufficiency. The primary facilities available at the campground are vault toilets, which are described as "very well kept" in customer reviews, indicating a level of cleanliness and maintenance despite their primitive nature.

A crucial aspect of camping at Kelty Meadow is the lack of potable (drinking) water. Campers must "bring water, etc." – typically in large containers like 5-gallon jugs, as advised by past visitors. While the stream is available for non-drinking water needs, all water for consumption, cooking, and personal hygiene requiring potable water must be brought in. This highlights the "dry camping" nature of the site.

The campground offers both "double and single campsites," providing flexibility for different group sizes. Each campsite typically includes a picnic table and a fire pit, allowing for comfortable outdoor dining and campfires (subject to fire restrictions, which are common in California's dry seasons). These basic provisions support the core camping activities of cooking and gathering around a fire.

As a primitive campground, there are no hookups for RVs (water, sewer, or electric), no showers, and likely no trash services (meaning campers must "pack it in, pack it out"). Campers should be fully prepared with all necessary supplies, including food, cooking equipment, lighting, and waste disposal bags. The quiet and peaceful atmosphere is partly maintained by the limited amenities, encouraging campers to embrace a minimalist approach and connect directly with the environment.

Features: Tranquility, Equestrian Focus, and True Wilderness Immersion

The standout features of Kelty Meadow Campground are its profound sense of peace and quiet, its appeal as a horse camp, and its provision of a truly immersive wilderness experience. The consistent feedback on its tranquility suggests it's an ideal escape for those seeking a respite from noise and crowds. The opportunity to camp alongside a stream further enhances this peaceful ambiance.

For equestrian enthusiasts, the "horse camp" designation is a significant draw. While there are no specific corrals or facilities, the ability to camp with horses in a designated area of the national forest is a valuable feature for riders. The surrounding forest likely offers numerous logging roads and informal trails suitable for horseback riding, allowing campers to explore the vast wilderness on their terms.

The challenge of the last few miles of road and the lack of potable water contribute to the "rustic" feel, ensuring that campers are generally those who are well-prepared and genuinely seeking a more rugged experience. This self-selection helps maintain the quiet and respectful atmosphere. The advice to "print out the travel directions when you reserve a spot" underscores the remote nature and the potential for limited cell service, making preparation crucial.

The campground is known to be less crowded than some more popular sites, especially during off-peak times, which further contributes to its appeal for those seeking solitude. The experience of free-ranging cows adds a unique element of rural charm, although campers should be mindful of their presence.

Promotional Information and Booking

Kelty Meadow Campground typically operates seasonally, usually from late spring through early fall, depending on snow levels and weather conditions. Reservations are highly recommended, especially during peak season and weekends. The online reservation system can sometimes be "confusing," as noted by a reviewer, who suggested an alternative approach of driving up and speaking to the camp host at the nearby Soquel Campground to secure a site. This indicates that an on-site presence or communication with local forest service personnel might be beneficial for booking or confirming availability.

Bookings are often made through the National Recreation Reservation Service (NRRS) via Recreation.gov. It is always wise to check the most current information regarding opening and closing dates, as well as any fire restrictions or forest closures, by contacting the Bass Lake Ranger District at (559) 642-3212 or visiting the Sierra National Forest website. Given that it is "bear country," proper food storage in bear-proof containers is mandatory and enforced to ensure the safety of both campers and wildlife.

The pricing for campsites typically varies depending on whether it's a single or double site. Being prepared for a primitive experience, including bringing all necessary water and packing out all trash, is essential for a successful stay. For those truly embracing the "Camping Near Me" ethos as a path to peace, quiet, and a genuine connection with the natural world, Kelty Meadow Campground offers an unspoiled and memorable escape in the Sierra National Forest.
