Kiefer Campgrounds - Corporate Headquarters Introduce
When searching for "camping near me," it's helpful to consider various options and what each campground offers. Kiefer Campgrounds, with its corporate headquarters listed in Effingham, IL, operates multiple locations, and feedback from different sites provides a comprehensive picture for potential campers. Based on recent reviews, experiences can vary between different Kiefer Campgrounds.
To provide a detailed introduction for local users considering Kiefer Campgrounds, we need to look at the specifics shared by those who have stayed at their various locations. The provided reviews mention stays at "Madison Campground" (presumably in Illinois, given the Effingham address of the corporate headquarters) and another Kiefer campground "near Meramec in Sullivan, MO." Let's break down the environment, services, and features based on these distinct experiences.
Environment: At the Madison Campground location, one reviewer who stayed on April 1, 2025, described an environment that was not adequately prepared for the opening date. They noted that the "campground restrooms had no water in them and were very dirty." This suggests that at least at the beginning of the season at this particular location, the cleanliness and functionality of essential facilities might be lacking. The grounds themselves were not specifically commented on in terms of maintenance in this negative review, but the issues with restrooms and electrical sites indicate potential oversights in preparation.
In contrast, the Kiefer campground near Meramec in Sullivan, MO, was described more positively regarding the environment. The reviewer mentioned that "the sites are close together" and are gravel, "pull through and Fairly level." This gives a sense of the layout and ground surface. The presence of "fire pits" at these sites allows for campfires, a common desire for many campers. The reviewer also noted "well manicured" grounds, implying a level of care and maintenance that was absent from the description of the Madison Campground experience.
Services: The services offered also seem to vary by location. At the Madison Campground, the negative review highlighted a significant issue with a lack of functioning electricity at an assigned campsite, requiring the campers to move after setting up. Additionally, the failure to provide a receipt via email as promised indicates potential issues with administrative services. The lack of water in the restrooms is a fundamental service concern.
The Kiefer campground near Meramec offered "full hook ups," which is a significant service for RV campers, typically including water, electricity, and sewer connections. They also had a "shower house" and a "laundry facility," which are valuable amenities for longer stays. While "no wifi" was mentioned, the "phone signal was ok but not great with ATT," which is important for connectivity. The availability of "wood on site" for the fire pits, albeit at a cost ($9 for 8 pieces), is a convenience. The camp store offers "simple needs like ice, propane refills, etc.," and a Dollar General (DG) is located nearby for further needs. This suggests a more comprehensive set of services at the Missouri location compared to the issues reported at the Madison Campground.
Features: The features also differed between the two experiences described. The Madison Campground review did not mention any specific features or recreational facilities, focusing instead on the lack of basic amenities and functional campsites.
The Kiefer campground near Meramec boasted several features: a "fenced dog play area," which is excellent for pet owners; a "pool (during summer only)," indicating a seasonal recreational option; a "very small playground and game room," which might entertain younger children for a limited time, especially in the off-season; and a "nice building with tables/ chairs, a juke box and one game" suitable for gatherings during inclement weather. These features suggest a more developed campground aimed at providing some recreational opportunities for guests.
Promotional Information: Based on the provided information, it's challenging to offer specific promotional details. The reviews are more focused on the experiences of individual stays. The positive review from the Missouri location, where the camper had "nothing at all to complain about" and found it to be a "cozy stay," serves as a form of positive promotion for that particular campground. However, the negative review from Madison Campground certainly does not serve as a promotion and highlights areas needing improvement.
For local users considering Kiefer Campgrounds, it would be prudent to inquire specifically about the location they are interested in (e.g., Madison Campground near Effingham or the campground near Meramec in Sullivan, MO). Given the contrasting experiences, the quality and preparedness might vary. If you are looking for a campground with full hookups, a dog play area, and a pool (during summer), the Missouri location seems to offer these. However, based on the April 2025 experience at Madison Campground, it would be wise to verify the operational status and cleanliness of facilities before booking, especially early in the season.
To get the most up-to-date information and any potential promotions, it is recommended to contact Kiefer Campgrounds directly at the provided phone number, (217) 342-1111 or +1 217-342-1111. You can also inquire about their various locations and the specific amenities and services available at each. Their corporate address is 3110 S Banker St, Effingham, IL 62401, USA, which might be a starting point for finding more information about their different campgrounds.
In summary, for those searching "camping near me" and considering Kiefer Campgrounds, be aware that it appears to encompass multiple locations with potentially different levels of service and amenities. The campground near Meramec in Sullivan, MO, received a positive review highlighting full hookups, a dog play area, and a seasonal pool. In contrast, a review of Madison Campground around its opening date indicated significant issues with restroom facilities and campsite functionality. It is advisable to do further research or directly contact Kiefer Campgrounds to get specific details about the location you plan to visit to ensure it meets your expectations for your camping experience.

Kiefer Campgrounds - Corporate Headquarters Reviews
We stayed at Madison Campground on April 1, 2025. The website said they opened on April 1. It was clear that no preparations at all had been made prior to April 1st. The campground restrooms had no water in them and were very dirty. They assigned us a campsite where the electricity didn't work. We had traveled 440 miles that day, were all set up, only to have to move. When we went back into the office to tell them, they sort of laughed and said - "Oh yeah, the electricity on that site didn't work last year. Guess you will have to move." We were also told that we would receive a receipt via email - it never happened. If you are open on April 1, then everything should be ready BY that date. For $70 a night, we were disappointed.
Apr 15, 2025 · Debbie AndersonWe stayed at Kiefer campground near Meramec in Sullivan, MO. I plan to share what campers want to know- the sites are close together, there are fire pits, there are full hook ups, no wifi, phone signal was ok but not great with ATT, there was a fenced dog play area, a pool (during summer only), a shower house, and a laundry facility. The sites are gravel- pull through and Fairly level. There is a very small playground and game room- I would not expect that children would be entertained for long in the off season (past Labor Day). There was a nice building with tables/ chairs, a juke box and one game to have a gathering with friends if it rains. 8 pieces of wood for the fire pit was $9 and wood on site. Simple needs like ice, propane refills, etc. are available at the camp store. If further needs are noted there is a DG right down the road. I gave 5 * because I had nothing at all to complain about and it was a cozy stay for a few nights!
Sep 16, 2024 · Amber VandersnelAfter a tire blowout on I 70 with our towed vehicle, we had to stay in Effingham overnight. An internet search found Lakewood Rv campground with great reviews and close proximity. If we had to be stuck somewhere for the night, we could not have found a better place. Walking around the lake at sunset was gorgeous. The trees provide cooling shade and breezes⁹. Clean, quiet campground with very clean bathrooms. We love the design of the sites. Spaced apart among the trees and angled to provide privacy. We hope to visit other Kiefer sites during our travels.
Jul 21, 2023 · William TaylorHad to "winter camp" for an event. We scrapped the idea of pulling our Trailer and opted for the Super Deluxe Cabin. It was a delightful experience for Jan and 4 in of snow!!!
Jan 23, 2025 · Kevin FiferDeforest Campground. No maintenece personnel on site. Spotty mowing and weeds. Pool issues. Road maintenence an issue. Dryers in poor condition. No one certified to dispense propane. No experienced adults in office. Only saving grace is proximity to Madison; about 13 miles, not six as they advertize!
