Kit Carson Campground

Kit Carson Campground Rd, Markleeville, CA 96120, USA

Only used the campground for the night as a stopover, but we liked it. Spots 5 and 2 are by the river. The bathrooms have open pit toilets with no sink, but the one by us was clean and didn’t smell. The road is just over the river and had a lot of noise in the day time, but was surprisingly quiet at night. There were ppl fishing on the other side of the river. - Dave Johnson

Kit Carson Campground Introduce

For those seeking a quaint and serene camping experience amidst the natural beauty of the Sierra Nevada, Kit Carson Campground in Markleeville, CA 96120, offers a delightful escape. Nestled along the banks of the West Fork Carson River within the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, this small campground provides a rustic yet well-maintained environment for both tent campers and those with smaller RVs. If you're searching for "Camping Near Me" and prefer a tranquil riverside setting, Kit Carson Campground is a compelling option. For inquiries, you can reach them at (530) 694-1002 or +1 530-694-1002.

Environment: Riverside Charm and Alpine Scenery

Kit Carson Campground is situated in a picturesque setting, surrounded by a forest of Jeffrey pines and aspens, and importantly, is located right next to the West Fork Carson River. This riverside proximity is a significant draw, offering calming sounds of flowing water and opportunities for fishing directly from the campground. Specific campsites, such as spots 2 and 5, are noted for being right by the river, providing excellent views and direct access.

While the campground is just over the river from Highway 88, which can lead to some daytime traffic noise, customer reviews consistently highlight that the noise becomes surprisingly quiet at night, allowing for a peaceful and restful sleep. The elevation of the campground is approximately 5,500 feet, which provides a comfortable climate during the warmer months, distinct from the higher altitudes found deeper in the High Sierra. The area is particularly beautiful in the fall when the aspen trees display vibrant foliage, creating a stunning backdrop for camping. The rugged canyon walls further enhance the natural appeal of the location, offering a true sense of being immersed in the wilderness.

Services and Amenities: Essential Comforts for a Rustic Stay

Kit Carson Campground is designed to provide a comfortable, yet distinctly rustic, camping experience. It typically offers a total of 12 campsites, with some sources indicating 9 single-family campsites, all available on a first-come, first-served basis. This means reservations are not typically accepted, so it's advisable to arrive early, especially during peak season, to secure a spot.

Key services and amenities include:

  • Campsite Features: Each campsite is equipped with essential amenities for a pleasant stay, including a picnic table, campfire ring, and grill. Importantly, given that the area is bear country, food storage lockers (bear boxes) are provided at each site, emphasizing visitor safety and responsible food storage. The sites are well-kept and offer varying degrees of privacy, with some nestled between large boulders and trees, creating unique "reading room" areas, as one happy camper described.

  • Restrooms: The campground features vault toilets (open pit toilets). While rustic and without sinks, reviews commend their cleanliness and lack of odor, with camp hosts ensuring they are well-maintained and stocked with toilet paper. Some restrooms may even have soft soap for handwashing, adding a thoughtful touch.

  • Water: Potable water is generally available at the campground. However, some sources indicate that potable water may not always be available, so it's wise for campers to bring their own water supply as a backup, especially during certain periods.

  • Camp Hosts: The presence of dedicated camp hosts (such as Kimo, who has received high praise) is a significant asset. They are noted for their friendliness, helpfulness, and commitment to keeping the facilities clean and orderly. They also typically have firewood available for purchase, adding convenience for campers.

  • Vehicle Accommodation: The campground welcomes both tents and RVs, though there's a restriction on RV length, with sites best suited for vehicles smaller than 30 feet, or specifically less than 24 feet according to some sources, due to smaller parking spurs and narrow roads within the loops. Some sites (e.g., Site 1) may have challenging approaches for larger vehicles.

  • Pet-Friendly: Dogs are welcome at Kit Carson Campground but must be kept on a leash at all times, in adherence to national forest regulations.

Features: Angler's Paradise and Trailhead Access

The defining feature of Kit Carson Campground is its direct access to the West Fork Carson River, making it a prime destination for fishing enthusiasts. The river is known for excellent fishing opportunities, and visitors are often seen casting lines from the opposite bank. Beyond fishing, the campground's strategic location along Highway 88 (Carson Pass Highway) opens up a wealth of recreational activities in the surrounding High Sierra.

Notable features and nearby attractions include:

  • Exceptional Fishing: The West Fork Carson River is a major draw, offering prime conditions for trout fishing.

  • Proximity to Markleeville: The small, quaint town of Markleeville is a short drive away, offering basic supplies at a general store and a few local restaurants. This allows campers to enjoy the wilderness while still having access to necessities.

  • Hope Valley: Known for its stunning fall colors and scenic beauty, Hope Valley is in close proximity, offering further opportunities for sightseeing and photography.
