You can reach them at (606) 663-8100 or +1 606-663-8100. Reviews from campers highlight both the appealing aspects of this campground and some recent issues that potential visitors should be aware of, particularly in the early part of the 2025 season.
Beautiful and Quiet Mountain Environment:
Koomer Ridge Campground is praised for its "beautiful location" and consistently described as "decently quiet," making it an attractive option for those seeking a peaceful natural retreat. Situated on a ridge, the campground offers a distinct advantage of being less prone to flooding compared to other local campgrounds, which can be a significant consideration in this region. The campsites are generally "nice and flat" with a surface of "small gravel," which campers appreciate for ease of setup. The layout provides "plenty of space and privacy between sites," enhancing the sense of seclusion and immersion in nature. Furthermore, its location offers close proximity to "all sorts of trails" within the Red River Gorge, making it an ideal basecamp for hiking and exploring the area's natural wonders.
Services and Amenities:
Based on the available reviews, the services and amenities at Koomer Ridge Campground include:
- Walk-in Campsites (Mostly): A key characteristic of Koomer Ridge is that most campsites are available on a walk-in basis, meaning reservations are not typically required. One frequent visitor notes they have "never had a problem finding one," suggesting generally good availability.
- Outhouses: The campground provides outhouses as restroom facilities. These are described as "pretty average" but are "spread out well" throughout the camping area.
- Water Availability (Potentially Limited): A recent review from April 2025 indicates a "water main burst," resulting in the only available water being located by the park ranger's camper. This suggests that while water is typically available, there can be temporary disruptions.
- Bathhouses (Potentially Closed for Maintenance): The same recent review mentions that the bathhouses, which the camper had expected to be open for an April 2025 stay, were closed for tile work and were not expected to open until May. This is a significant factor for campers relying on these facilities.
The reviews do not provide information on other potential amenities such as electric hookups, picnic tables, fire rings, or dump stations. Local users should be prepared for a more rustic camping experience, particularly given the reliance on outhouses and the potential for water service interruptions. It is advisable to contact the campground directly for a comprehensive list of current amenities and their operational status.
Features and Highlights:
Koomer Ridge Campground offers several features that contribute to its popularity among those seeking 'camping near me' in the Red River Gorge:
- Proximity to Hiking Trails: Its location close to numerous trails makes it a prime choice for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts looking to explore the natural beauty of the Red River Gorge.
- Ridge Location (No Flood Risk): Being situated on a ridge provides a significant advantage by mitigating the risk of flooding, a concern at some other campgrounds in the area.
- Quiet and Private Campsites: The spacious and relatively private campsites contribute to a peaceful and secluded camping experience.
- Walk-in Availability: The mostly walk-in system can be convenient for spontaneous trips, although it's wise to consider arriving earlier during peak seasons.
- Loyal Following: The comment "Stayed here every time I visit RRG" indicates a strong positive sentiment and loyalty among regular visitors.
However, the recent issues with bathhouse closures and water outages, particularly with a lack of notification on the website, are important considerations for potential visitors in the early 2025 season.
Promotional Information and Current Status:
The provided reviews do not contain any specific promotional offers for Koomer Ridge Campground. However, the repeated positive sentiment from a long-time visitor suggests that the campground has historically offered a valuable experience that keeps people returning. The recent negative review, while still expressing love for the campground, highlights the importance of checking current conditions before planning a trip, especially regarding essential amenities like water and bathhouses.
For local users considering Koomer Ridge Campground for a 'camping near me' getaway, especially in the spring of 2025, it is crucial to:
- Contact the campground directly: Use the provided phone numbers ((606) 663-8100 or +1 606-663-8100) to inquire about the current status of the bathhouses and water supply. Confirm when the bathhouses are expected to reopen and if the water main issue has been resolved.
- Check for website updates: While one reviewer noted a lack of information on the website regarding the closures, it is still worth checking for any recent announcements or advisories.
- Be prepared for rustic conditions: Given the reliance on outhouses and the potential for temporary water issues, campers should be prepared for a more primitive camping experience, at least in the short term.
- Consider the walk-in policy: While generally convenient, be aware that availability might be limited during peak times, and arriving earlier in the day is advisable.
Despite the recent setbacks with amenities, the fundamental appeal of Koomer Ridge Campground lies in its beautiful and quiet location within the Red River Gorge, its proximity to hiking trails, and the privacy offered by its campsites. For those who prioritize these aspects and are willing to accommodate potential temporary limitations in facilities, Koomer Ridge remains a popular choice for 'camping near me'. However, verifying the current status of essential amenities is a necessary step before planning your visit.

Koomer Ridge Campground Reviews
Love Koomer Ridge. Stayed here every time I visit RRG. Campsites are mostly walk-in availability, and I've never had a problem finding one. Nice and flat with small gravel, outhouses are pretty average and spread out well. Beautiful location and always decently quiet, plenty of space and privacy between sites. Close to all sorts of trails, and being up on the ridge I'm not worried about flooding like I would be at some of the other local campgrounds.
May 02, 2025 · Sarah McAllisterReserved spot 4/18-20-25 thinking bathhouses would be open. They are not. Park ranger said probably not until May, laying tile. Also water main burst so only water was by his camper. No mention on website. We love Koomer campground but have been let down last few times
Apr 19, 2025 · Michael JohnsonI regret staying at this campground. Their shower and bath house was closed and there wasn’t any potable water available either but the price to stay there was still $31. I would’ve done back country camping if I had known that. Tent pads were all crushed gravel. My opinion it is not worth $30 a night. They should’ve given discount with all the amenities that were unavailable. One note is that the vault toilet were not disgusting like they usually are.
Apr 19, 2025 · Roselle TenorioAbsolutely love this campground, and have been coming here for years. The campground host works so hard to keep the grounds clean and cleared, especially after the recent hurricane (Helene) that unfortunately knocked down multiple trees throughout the area. The shower house is great and the host keeps it so clean. Having trails connected to the campground is the best part! We were able to get in 12.5 miles, then walk back into camp and take a nice hot shower! We always look forward to staying here if we arent backpacking.
Oct 28, 2024 · Julia LReally love the forested campsites. Unfortunately, the water system had a leak and the bath house was under repair making the visit a true dry camping experience.
