Lake Canyon Recreation Area Campground

Forest Rd 3054, Mt Pleasant, UT 84647, USA

4.0
One of our favorite camping spots. We try to come every year! The nearby reservoirs are great for kayaks and paddle boards. Historically for us, the shore fishing has not been good on Huntington or Cleveland. If you want to shore-fish, try the smaller ones like the beaver pond reservoir, but sometimes (at dusk) miller flat reservoir has been good fishing for the kids. There are also nearby ATV trails that my husband and kids like to take our motorcycles on. If you are coming to camp in “peace and quiet” this probably isn’t the area for you. Lots of people in side-by-sides, four wheelers and on motorcycles use the nearby trails. It is also a pack-it-in, pack-it-out area with no garbage bins to dispose of trash. This campground is considered “boondocking” which means no hookups for trailers. There are however occasional vault toilets amongst the campgrounds. - B.T. Mangus

Lake Canyon Recreation Area Campground Introduce

For those in the Mt Pleasant, Utah area or planning a visit and searching for "camping near me," Lake Canyon Recreation Area Campground, located on Forest Rd 3054, Mt Pleasant, UT 84647, USA, offers a camping experience amidst a landscape rich in outdoor recreational opportunities. You can contact them at (435) 384-3272 or +1 435-384-3272. Based on customer reviews, this campground is a favorite for some due to its location near reservoirs suitable for water sports and its proximity to ATV and motorcycle trails. However, it's important to note that this is a more primitive "boondocking" style campground with certain limitations.

When individuals search for "camping near me," their preferences can vary widely. Some seek developed campgrounds with full amenities, while others prefer a more rustic, off-grid experience. Lake Canyon Recreation Area Campground leans towards the latter, as indicated by the reviews. One long-time visitor described it as "one of our favorite camping spots," highlighting their annual return. They praised the nearby reservoirs as "great for kayaks and paddle boards," indicating a significant draw for water sports enthusiasts. This suggests that the environment around the campground includes accessible and scenic bodies of water perfect for non-motorized boating activities.

The same reviewer also provided insights into fishing in the area, noting that shore fishing at Huntington and Cleveland Reservoirs had not been historically good for them. They recommended trying smaller reservoirs like Beaver Pond Reservoir for shore fishing and mentioned that Miller Flat Reservoir sometimes offers good fishing for children at dusk. This information can be valuable for campers who enjoy fishing and are looking for "camping near me" with angling opportunities.

A major feature of the area surrounding Lake Canyon Recreation Area Campground is its network of ATV and motorcycle trails, which were enjoyed by the reviewer's husband and kids. This positions the campground as an ideal base for off-highway vehicle (OHV) enthusiasts seeking "camping near me" with direct access to riding trails. However, this also comes with a caveat: the reviewer cautioned that if you are seeking "peace and quiet," this might not be the area for you due to the significant presence of side-by-sides, four-wheelers, and motorcycles using the nearby trails. This is an important consideration for those who prioritize a tranquil camping experience.

Another crucial aspect mentioned is that the campground is a "pack-it-in, pack-it-out" area with no garbage bins provided for trash disposal. This requires campers to be self-sufficient in managing their waste and leaving their campsite clean. Additionally, the reviewer noted that the campground is considered "boondocking," meaning there are no hookups for trailers (water, electricity, or sewer). However, they did mention the occasional presence of vault toilets amongst the campgrounds, indicating a basic level of sanitation.

A second reviewer echoed the sentiment of the area being a "beautiful place to camp" but raised concerns about the value for the $15 fee, given the lack of amenities. They pointed out the absence of trash disposal and water, which aligns with the "boondocking" description. Furthermore, they noted that most campsites did not even have a picnic table, and while there was a fire ring, it lacked a grate for cooking. This reviewer, with experience at numerous Forest Service campgrounds, found this lack of basic amenities unusual compared to their past experiences.

The condition of the roads around the campground was described as "rough," although it didn't seem to pose a significant issue for most trailers. The reviewer also noted that many campsites were uneven, which could require extra effort for leveling RVs or setting up tents. While the sites were generally spread out, some were quite close to each other, potentially affecting privacy in certain areas.

The popularity of the area for OHV riding was again mentioned, with the reviewer noting that while most riders were considerate, a few would "tear back and forth through the campground," contributing to noise. The condition of the bathrooms (vault toilets) was reported as clean and well-stocked upon arrival but declined after a couple of days, likely due to heavy use and the lack of regular maintenance. The reviewer also noted the unpleasant smell of burning trash, indicating that some campers were not adhering to the "pack-it-out" policy.

Considering the platform category "camping near me," Lake Canyon Recreation Area Campground offers a primitive camping experience in a scenic location with access to water sports on nearby reservoirs and extensive OHV trail systems. However, potential campers should be aware that this is a "boondocking" campground with no hookups, limited amenities (no trash disposal, no water at sites, often no picnic tables or grates on fire rings), and potential for noise from OHV traffic. The beauty of the natural surroundings and the recreational opportunities are the primary draws, but self-sufficiency and tolerance for a less developed camping environment are necessary.

There is no promotional information available in the provided reviews. Individuals interested in camping at Lake Canyon Recreation Area Campground should contact the Forest Service or relevant managing authority directly using the provided phone number to inquire about camping fees, regulations, availability, and any specific guidelines for the area, such as fire restrictions or OHV trail information. Understanding the "pack-it-in, pack-it-out" policy and being prepared for a primitive camping experience is crucial for a successful visit.

In conclusion, Lake Canyon Recreation Area Campground offers a unique "camping near me" experience for those drawn to the Mt Pleasant, UT area for its reservoirs and OHV trails. While the natural beauty and recreational opportunities are significant attractions, potential campers should be prepared for a primitive camping environment with limited amenities and potential noise from off-road vehicles. The "pack-it-in, pack-it-out" policy requires campers to be responsible for their waste. Contacting the managing authority directly is recommended to obtain detailed information and ensure a well-prepared and enjoyable camping trip.
