Lake Sheloole Campground And Rv Park Introduce
Are you a local user or traveler passing through the Shelby, Montana area in search of a convenient and budget-friendly "camping near me" option? Lake Sheloole Campground And RV Park, located at 1210 Oilfield Ave, Shelby, MT 59474, USA, offers a straightforward and functional place to stay. Based on recent customer reviews, this campground provides essential amenities and a convenient location near Shelby, making it a practical choice for overnight stops or short stays.
A Convenient Location Near Shelby with Basic Natural Ambiance
Lake Sheloole Campground And RV Park is described as "located near Shelby," indicating its accessibility to the town's services and amenities. While the reviews do not extensively detail the immediate natural environment within the campground itself, the presence of a lake in its name suggests a potential water feature nearby, although its direct accessibility or integration with the campsites is not specified. The surrounding landscape of Shelby, Montana, is characterized by the vast plains of the state, so campers can likely expect an open environment with views of the expansive sky.
One reviewer mentions a "great walking/bike trail in the area," indicating that while the campground itself might have a more utilitarian feel, there are opportunities for outdoor recreation in its immediate vicinity. This trail likely offers a chance to stretch your legs, enjoy the local scenery, and perhaps even access the namesake Lake Sheloole if it's integrated with the trail system.
The campground operates on a "first come first serve" basis for its spots, which is important information for local users planning a stay, especially during peak travel times. This policy means that reservations are not typically taken, and securing a spot depends on arriving early enough.
Essential Services and Functional Amenities
Lake Sheloole Campground And RV Park provides a range of essential services, although some limitations and quirks have been noted by recent visitors:
- Electric Hookups: Most of the campsites are equipped with both 30A and 15A electrical hookups, making it suitable for RVs and those needing power for their camping setups.
- BBQ/Grill: A significant number of spots include a BBQ grill, offering a convenient way for campers to cook meals outdoors.
- Limited Water Hookups: Only a few spots have water hookups, so RVers and campers relying on direct water connections should inquire about availability upon arrival or be prepared to manage their water supply.
- Few Tables: The availability of picnic tables seems limited, so bringing your own portable table might be advisable, especially for larger groups.
- Older but Clean Toilets and Showers: The restroom facilities are described as "old but appear to be clean" and include showers. While not modern, the cleanliness is a positive aspect for campers.
- Dump Station: The campground has a "well designed" dump station for RVers to empty their holding tanks. However, a notable issue is that the hose cannot be plugged in to rinse the tanks, which is an inconvenience for maintaining hygiene.
A point of concern raised by one reviewer is the water quality from the taps, noting that "all taps have a different color." This suggests potential issues with the water source or plumbing, and local users might want to exercise caution and consider bringing their own drinking water. Additionally, the same reviewer pointed out that the water and electric hookups can be "way apart from each other" at some sites, which could require extra-long cords and hoses for proper connection.
Features: Convenience, Budget-Friendly Pricing, and Nearby Trail
The primary features of Lake Sheloole Campground And RV Park are its convenience to Shelby, its budget-friendly pricing, and the accessibility to a walking/bike trail:
- Proximity to Shelby: Being "close by for groceries/gas/food" is a significant advantage for travelers needing to resupply or wanting to explore the local town.
- Honor System Pricing: The campground operates on a "$25 per night honor" system, indicating an affordable price point for camping and RV stays. This self-payment system often reflects a more basic level of service but can be appealing to budget-conscious travelers.
- Walking/Bike Trail: The presence of a nearby trail offers opportunities for recreation and enjoying the local area without having to drive.
- Lower vs. Upper Sites: The campground has lower sites with water and electric hookups (W/E) and upper sites with only electric hookups (E) but more privacy. This provides some choice depending on individual needs and preferences.
The first-come-first-serve policy can be seen as both a feature and a limitation. It offers flexibility for those with unpredictable travel schedules but requires arriving early to secure a spot, especially during busy times.

Nice campground located near Shelby. First come first serve spots. Most of the spots have electricity 30A and 15A and a bbq/grill, few spots have water, there are few tables too. Not sure about the water quality, all taps have a different color. Also, water and electric are way appart from each other.Toilets are old but appear to be clean. The dump station is well designed but the hose can't be plugged to rinse the tanks.
Jul 13, 2023 · Christophe LGreat campground, bathrooms are older but clean with showers, great walking/bike trail in the area. Lower sites have W/E, upper sites only E but are more private. $25 per night honor. Shelby is close by for groceries/gas/food. We'd stay here again.
Jun 26, 2023 · Tom CrombieWhat a great town run tourist RV park! Very spacious, quiet. 30amp andWater. Dump station on site as well as restrooms and free full flowing hot showers. Very impressed at how welcoming this is on behalf of the town of Shelby. On a Friday night there were only three rvs total. Kind of sad to see! There were no envelopes for payment so we made our own and put our license plate number and placed payment (cash or check only)
Jul 16, 2022 · heatherlin7Great town camp site. $25. All spots have power. Water points scattered about. Good clean bathrooms with good hot showers. Lots of spots available here and only 8 other rvs the Friday night we stayed in July. Both pull through and back in sites. No skeeters. Lake next door, but campground is below the dam with no view of the lake. I would definitely stay again. Thanks to the city of Shelby for keeping this great campground going.
Jul 23, 2022 · Bob JohnsonGreat quiet little spot! We stopped through on our 3K trip from AK. Can't speak on anything pertaining to the bathrooms as we had everything we needed, water, power, and a dump station (no sewage hookups at spots). For $25 it's a steal! We stayed an extra night because the weather was amazing!
