Lake Shore Group Campground - Ocala National Forest Introduce
For local users searching for "camping near me" that can accommodate larger groups within a beautiful natural setting, Lake Shore Group Campground, located at 8340 N E 147th Avenue Rd, Silver Springs, FL 34488, USA, in the Ocala National Forest, presents an appealing option. Based on the available customer reviews, this campground offers ample space for big groups, shade, and access to a lake, making it suitable for gatherings who appreciate the outdoors. However, potential visitors should also be aware of the presence of ticks in the area.
One of the primary features highlighted is its suitability "for a big group." This suggests that the layout and size of the campsites are designed to comfortably accommodate larger parties, making it an excellent choice for family reunions, group outings with friends, or other large gatherings looking for "camping near me." The presence of "plenty of shade" is another significant environmental benefit, particularly in Florida's climate, offering a more comfortable camping experience by providing relief from the sun.
The campground also features "a little trail to explore (super short walk but fun for the kids)." While short, this trail offers a convenient opportunity for a bit of nature exploration, especially for families with young children. This adds to the recreational aspects of the campground beyond just the campsite itself.
In terms of amenities, Lake Shore Group Campground provides "bathrooms and showers (with warm water)." The availability of showers with warm water is a notable comfort for a primitive campground often found in national forests. The reviewer also mentioned that there are lights in the bathrooms and showers, enhancing usability, but noted the absence of outlets in these areas and no electricity elsewhere in the campground. This reinforces the nature-focused, somewhat rustic experience, where campers should come prepared without relying on electrical power at their sites.
For communal use, there is "a pavilion with tables and a big grill (coal)" as well as "more tables around with little grills." This setup is ideal for group cooking and dining, providing designated spaces for preparing meals and gathering to eat. The provision of both a large group grill and smaller individual ones offers flexibility for different cooking needs.
Access to the lake is another significant feature, allowing visitors to "bring a kayak or paddle board." This opens up opportunities for water-based activities. However, the review also includes a crucial note about Florida waters: "yeah you will spot Alligators." This serves as an important safety reminder for anyone planning to use the lake for recreation. The campground also provides "trash can that are bear proof," indicating that wildlife, including bears, may be present in the area, and proper food storage ("Food should be storage at the cards never on the tent") is necessary for safety.
Despite the many positives, a significant downside mentioned repeatedly is the presence of ticks: "TICKS ... lots of them." The reviewer strongly advises coming "prepared with bug spray and long sleeve shirts and pants" and emphasizes the importance of checking for ticks after being outdoors. This is a critical piece of information for anyone considering this campground, as it highlights a potential environmental challenge that requires proactive preparation.
One reviewer shared a positive sentiment about Florida's natural attractions, stating, "I've enjoyed every state park and also every clear spring I visited in florida so far have been breathtaking," which indirectly speaks to the natural beauty of the Ocala National Forest area where the campground is located.

Jan 23, 2025 · Francis McNeiceBeautiful place but few creature comforts. No electricity. No hot water in the sinks. Two showers with hot water. Nice shelter with 4 picnic tables. Pretty lake and room for dozens of tents.

Jul 15, 2024 · Debbie PrattUPDATE:A little disappointing, this site has really gone down hill since the first review 6 years ago. The bathrooms are an absolute mess during the summer due to the FWC kid's summer camp abusing them. We also had issues with the homeless last time we went. Marion County SO is absolutely useless when it comes to trespassers, call FWC. The prices also doubled with no benefit to users of the site. Those of us that used it frequently kept it clean. Those who use it for free have destroyed this place. Also expect gate combo issues with no one to contact about the problem.Original Review:Lake Shore never disappointing. This is one of the very few group sites in Florida that has swimming, accommodates pets, and you don't share the restroom with anyone else. Camp hosts are always friendly (and vary from year to year.) The site gets reserved fairly quickly so plan well in advance. The smoker/grill/bbq on site is well built and we've smoked a LOT of meat in this thing. There are also standard park grills around the site. Plenty of lantern posts and a very large camp fire ring rounds out the site. Windixie is around 15 minutes away with roughly half an hour to Silver Springs if you needed anything that the local dollar stores (2) can't provide.
