Lakeside Campground Introduce
For local users in search of a memorable "camping near me" experience, Lakeside Campground, situated in the scenic Seeley Lake area of Montana, presents a compelling option. With a history of being a beloved camping destination, Lakeside Campground offers the unique allure of campsites located directly on the beach of Seeley Lake. While its popularity has evolved over the years, resulting in changes to its reservation system, it continues to be recognized for its exceptional beauty.
Located at Seeley Lake, MT 59868, USA, Lakeside Campground benefits from the stunning natural environment of western Montana. Seeley Lake is known for its crystal-clear waters, surrounded by lush forests and the majestic peaks of the Northern Rocky Mountains. This setting provides a plethora of opportunities for outdoor recreation, including swimming, boating, fishing, hiking, and simply enjoying the tranquility of a lakeside environment. The air is typically fresh and clean, and the scenery is often breathtaking, making it a prime location for those seeking a respite in nature.
One long-time visitor fondly recalls a time when Lakeside Campground was a "little known and first-come, first-served" haven, highlighting its enduring appeal over the past 35-40 years. This speaks volumes about the inherent quality of the location and the camping experience it offers. However, the reviewer notes a significant change: it has now become "reservation-only" and requires booking for a group. This shift in policy suggests increased popularity and potentially limited availability, requiring prospective campers to plan and book in advance, likely through a reservation system managed by the relevant authorities (such as the US Forest Service or a private operator, though this is not specified). The group booking requirement might imply that individual or smaller family bookings are no longer accommodated, or perhaps there are specific group site designations.
A key feature of Lakeside Campground, as emphasized by the long-time visitor, is that the "Sites are on the beach." This is a highly desirable attribute for many campers, offering direct access to the lake for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying the waterfront. Waking up to the gentle lapping of waves and having the lake just steps from your tent or RV can create an unforgettable camping experience. However, the reviewer also mentions that their "favorite one on the hill" has been closed. This suggests that the campground might have had a variety of site types, including some with elevated views, and that the current configuration might be more focused on the beachfront locations.
Another reviewer provides a slightly different perspective, noting that "If it wasn't so close to the road it would be one of the best campgrounds around." This introduces a potential drawback: noise from a nearby road. While the reviewer states that the road noise "didn't bother us," they acknowledge that "if you are looking for complete peace and quiet this might not be your bag, baby." This is an important consideration for potential campers who are particularly sensitive to noise and seek a completely serene natural environment. The proximity to the road might be a trade-off for the convenience of access or the prime lakefront location.
Despite the potential for road noise, the second reviewer also highlights positive aspects, describing the campsites as "Nice, big spots right on the lake." Spacious campsites are always a plus, offering more room for tents, equipment, and general comfort. The reiteration that the sites are "right on the lake" reinforces the primary appeal of this campground.
Based on the available reviews, we can summarize the environment, services, and features of Lakeside Campground:
- Environment: Situated on the beach of Seeley Lake in Montana, surrounded by forests and mountains. Expect beautiful lake views and direct lake access. The proximity to a road might introduce some level of noise pollution.
- Services: The shift to "reservation-only" and "group" booking suggests a structured management system. The presence of beachfront campsites is a key service. The closure of hillside sites indicates a potential change in the types of sites available. Information on other services like restrooms, water, fire pits, or trash disposal is not provided in the reviews, so potential campers should inquire about these when making reservations.
- Features: The primary features are the lakefront campsites with direct beach access and the scenic beauty of Seeley Lake and its surroundings. The campground has a long history of being a favorite among campers. The change to reservation-only and group booking might be a feature or a limitation depending on the camper's needs. The potential for road noise is a notable characteristic to consider.
Promotional information is somewhat implicit in the positive sentiments expressed by the long-time visitor ("still the prettiest around") and the second reviewer ("Nice, big spots right on the lake"). The allure of camping directly on the beach of a beautiful Montana lake is a significant draw in itself. However, the change to group reservations might be seen as a limitation for smaller parties. The potential for road noise is a factor that might deter some but not others.
For local users considering Lakeside Campground within the "camping near me" category, it's essential to be aware of the current reservation policy, particularly the requirement for group bookings. If you are planning a group camping trip and value direct lake access and scenic beauty, Lakeside Campground appears to be an excellent choice, despite the potential for some road noise. It would be prudent to investigate the group size requirements and the reservation process through the provided phone numbers: (406) 329-3750 or +1 406-329-3750. Inquiring about the specific amenities available at the group campsites and the proximity of the road to the different sites would also be beneficial in planning your trip.
In conclusion, Lakeside Campground near Seeley Lake, Montana, offers a unique and highly desirable camping experience with its beachfront campsites on a beautiful lake. While it has transitioned to a reservation-only system, potentially requiring group bookings, its scenic location and the quality of the campsites continue to make it a popular destination. Local users should weigh the benefits of lakefront camping against the potential for road noise and ensure they meet the current reservation requirements to enjoy this long-time favorite Montana campground.

Lakeside Campground Reviews
My all time favorite campground. I took my 3 daughters here 35-40 years ago nearly every weekend when it was little known and first-come, first-served. It’s much harder to camp there now, as it’s become reservation-only and you have to book it for a group but it’s still the prettiest around. Sites are on the beach, but they closed my favorite one on the hill.
