Little Bear Island Campground Introduce
For local users in Kentucky and neighboring states searching within the "camping near me" category for a riverside camping experience, Little Bear Island Campground, located at 789 KY-3307, Greenup, KY 41144, USA, offers a potentially appealing setting. Situated in Greenup, Kentucky, the campground appears to be located on or near a river, likely offering waterfront access and a natural environment for relaxation. However, recent customer reviews provide a mixed perspective, highlighting both positive aspects and significant considerations for potential visitors, especially those with larger recreational vehicles.
The environment of Little Bear Island Campground is clearly a significant draw for many. One reviewer described their campsite as "beautiful," suggesting that the grounds offer scenic views and a pleasant natural setting. The proximity to a river, implied by the potential for wet conditions and the name "Little Bear Island," indicates opportunities for water-related activities and a tranquil riverside ambiance. The location is also noted as "perfect" due to its proximity to nearby towns like Russell and Ashland, offering convenience for accessing supplies or local amenities if needed. The potential for a "lazy weekend" spent camping and hanging out underscores the peacefulness and natural appeal of the area for those seeking a relaxing escape.
The services and features of Little Bear Island Campground, gleaned from the customer reviews, include:
- Water and 50-amp connection: At least some campsites are equipped with water hookups and a 50-amp electrical connection, which is a significant amenity for RV campers requiring these services.
- Convenient dump site: For RV users, the presence of a "dump site convenient on our way out" adds to the practicality of staying at the campground.
- Helpful hosts: One reviewer praised the hosts as "great," suggesting a positive and welcoming management that contributes to a pleasant stay.
However, the reviews also bring to light some important considerations and potential drawbacks:
- Wet and water-retaining land: A significant environmental factor is that "The land can get wet and hold water, especially the closer spots to the river." This is particularly important to note after periods of rain, as even after the rain stops, the ground may remain slick and prone to holding water. This could affect tent campers and maneuverability for vehicles.
- Potential for getting RVs stuck: A concerning issue raised by one reviewer is the high risk of larger RVs getting stuck, particularly on the "2nd site as you get onto the island." The reviewer, driving a 43' Diesel Pusher weighing over 46,000 lbs with two rear axles, got stuck and was informed by the tow truck driver that "they should have told me about big rigs getting stuck there." This suggests a known issue, with a coach being pulled out the day before and several others the week before. While the manager did refund the money in this instance, the experience was time-consuming and expensive for the RV owner. This is a critical warning for anyone considering bringing a large RV to Little Bear Island Campground.
- Unattended arrival: One reviewer arrived to find "nobody was around" at the campground, which might be a factor for those expecting immediate assistance upon arrival. However, they were able to contact the manager.
- Unmarked trail (implied): While not directly stated about the campground itself, the mention of arriving at the "2nd site as you get onto the island" suggests that site numbering or clear directions upon entering might be important for smooth arrival.
The reviews do not provide any specific promotional information for Little Bear Island Campground. Local users interested in potential discounts for longer stays, off-season rates, or any other special offers should contact the campground directly using the provided phone numbers: (606) 280-8258 or +1 606-280-8258.
Despite the serious issue encountered by the large RV owner, other reviewers had positive experiences, praising the beautiful sites and helpful hosts. The availability of water and 50-amp connections is a significant advantage for RVers with those needs. The potential for a relaxing riverside camping experience also remains a key attraction for those with smaller vehicles or tents who are mindful of the potentially wet ground conditions, especially near the river.
In conclusion, Little Bear Island Campground in Greenup, Kentucky, offers a riverside camping environment with potentially beautiful sites and helpful hosts. It provides amenities such as water and 50-amp connections, as well as a convenient dump site for RVs. However, potential visitors, particularly those with large RVs, must be aware of the significant risk of getting stuck, especially on the initial sites upon entering the "island" area. The land's tendency to get wet and hold water, especially near the river, is another important environmental factor to consider, particularly for tent campers. Local users are strongly advised to contact the campground directly using the provided phone numbers to inquire about site suitability for their type of camping unit, current ground conditions, check-in procedures, and any potential warnings or recommendations regarding specific sites. While some guests have had wonderful stays and intend to return, the experience of the stuck RV highlights a critical issue that needs to be addressed and communicated transparently by the campground management to ensure the safety and satisfaction of all visitors.

Little Bear Island Campground Reviews
I had a wonderful time here. Hosts are great. I'd love to spend a lazy weekend here just camping and hanging out. Unfortunately this time around it was just a place to sleep. The location is perfect. If you forgot anything Russell and Ashland are not far.Our site was beautiful. We had water abs a 50amp connection. Dump site convenient on our way out.The land can get wet and hold water, especially the closer spots to the river, so be mindful. It was raining hard the days prior to arrival, but stopped the day we set camp. By the next day I rode my MC out of the grounds. There were still some slick spots but if you are mindful is fine.We will definitely be back. And our offer to help out around the grounds still stands!
Jul 08, 2021 · Eric KreitzerWe got to the campground and nobody was around. I started backing into the site, 2nd site as you get onto the island, and I got stuck. I have a 43' Deisel Pusher with 2 rear axels. A little over 46,000 lbs. I called the manager and he said he was 20 min. Away. He got there about an hour later but did give me a # for a tow company. I called them and they were about 30 min. Away. When the driver showed up he said they should have told me about big rigs getting stuck there. A coach was pulled out the day before and a few others the week before. The manager did refund my money as I told him I would not be staying there. It took a few hours to get pulled out and it was expensive. FMCA would not cover it. We visited Little Bear Island Campground, no overnight stay.
Nov 10, 2021 · Richard BrowningThis isn't a campground, it's a field behind someone's house. When we showed up, it was wet and muddy. I incorrectly assumed the manager knew the land that he was looking after. I followed his driving instructions and got my Class A diesel pusher stuck in the wet clay. Fortunately, they had an old tractor and pulled me out after about an hour. We covered our motorhome and tow vehicle with mud and left. If you have a small trailer and there has been a prolonged drought, this would be OK, otherwise, AVOID THIS PLACE!
Oct 28, 2021 · charlie sageI went to check it out a year ago. It was muddy on a dry day. Could get stuck easy, it's beside a home and no gravel, just grass to park on so I left.
May 05, 2023 · Jerry SextonAfter a long search for a campground for my husband working in the area, Danny was very accommodating and made the reservation process painless. He went above and beyond what any campground manager has done. We would highly recommend this campground for anyone in the area and hope to stay again very soon.
