Lockaby Campground Introduce
For local users seeking a tranquil "camping near me" experience in the Estacada, Oregon area, Lockaby Campground, situated along OR-224, presents a compelling option for those who value natural beauty and a sense of seclusion. The available customer reviews highlight both the appealing aspects of this campground and important considerations for potential visitors, particularly families with young children.
One of the most frequently praised features of Lockaby Campground is its stunning natural environment. Reviewers consistently describe it as "beautiful" and "peaceful," suggesting an idyllic setting that allows campers to connect with nature and enjoy a serene atmosphere. A significant highlight is the availability of "many sites right above the river." This riverside location offers the soothing sounds of flowing water and potentially picturesque views, enhancing the overall camping experience for those fortunate enough to secure such a spot. Waking up to the sights and sounds of the river can be a truly immersive and relaxing experience for nature lovers.
The campground is also commended for being "well kept & maintained," indicating that the facilities and grounds are generally in good condition. This attention to upkeep contributes to a more pleasant and comfortable stay for visitors. Furthermore, the campsites are described as "spacious with privacy," a highly desirable feature for many campers. Ample space allows for comfortable setup and movement around the site, while privacy enhances the feeling of being immersed in nature and away from the bustle of daily life. This combination of spaciousness and privacy makes Lockaby Campground particularly appealing to those seeking a more secluded and personal camping experience.
Another reviewer describes Lockaby as a "peaceful secluded campground with only a few spots," reinforcing the sense of tranquility and limited crowds. This can be a major advantage for campers who prefer a more intimate and less congested camping environment compared to larger, more bustling campgrounds. The limited number of sites likely contributes to the overall peaceful ambiance and the feeling of being more connected to nature.
However, the same reviewer also points out a crucial aspect that potential visitors need to be aware of: the layout of the campground. The loop within Lockaby Campground has distinct characteristics on either side. One side offers the coveted "river front" sites, while the other side is located "right on the highway," resulting in the noticeable sound and sight of passing vehicles. This significant difference in campsite environment within the same campground means that the camping experience can vary considerably depending on the specific site assigned. Campers sensitive to noise may want to specifically request a riverside site if available.
Another practical consideration mentioned is that "the vault bathrooms smell strongly of the chemicals they have to use." While vault toilets are common in more rustic campgrounds, the strong chemical odor can be a significant drawback for some visitors. This is a factor to weigh when considering the overall comfort and convenience of the facilities at Lockaby Campground.
Perhaps the most critical piece of information, especially for families, is the serious safety concern raised by one reviewer regarding small children. They explicitly state, "If you have small children many of these sites are dangerous, there’s no barrier between them and a cliff to the river or on the other side they could run into highway traffic. I wouldn’t consider this a family friendly campsite." This is a significant warning that potential visitors with young children must take into account. The lack of barriers near steep drops to the river and the proximity of other sites to the highway pose genuine safety hazards for unsupervised young children. This suggests that while Lockaby Campground offers beauty and tranquility, it may not be the ideal choice for families with toddlers or very young kids who require close supervision and safe play areas.
Considering the information from the reviews, Lockaby Campground offers a beautiful and peaceful setting, particularly for those seeking riverside campsites and a degree of seclusion. The spacious and private sites, along with the well-maintained grounds, contribute to its appeal. However, potential visitors must be aware of the potential downsides, including the noise from highway-adjacent sites and the strong odor from the vault toilets. Most importantly, the serious safety concerns regarding the lack of barriers near the river cliffs and highway proximity make this campground potentially unsuitable for families with small children.
Given the absence of information regarding specific services and amenities beyond the vault toilets, it is advisable for local users interested in Lockaby Campground to contact them directly at (503) 630-6861 or +1 503-630-6861. Inquiries should focus on campsite availability (specifically requesting riverside sites if desired), the types of hookups available (if any, although the reviews don't mention them, suggesting they are likely primitive sites without hookups), the condition of the facilities, and any specific policies or recommendations regarding safety, especially for children. Information about reservation procedures and any potential fees would also be essential.
In conclusion, for local users searching for "camping near me" who prioritize a beautiful and peaceful riverside setting with spacious and private campsites, Lockaby Campground offers significant appeal. However, it is crucial to be aware of the potential drawbacks, including highway noise on some sites, the odor from vault toilets, and, most importantly, the potential safety hazards for families with small children due to unfenced river cliffs and highway proximity. Careful consideration of these factors, along with direct communication with the campground management for detailed information, is essential before making a decision to camp at Lockaby Campground.

Lockaby Campground Reviews
Beautiful, peaceful camp ground with many sites right above the river. Well kept & maintained. Spacious sites with privacy. Will return again & again.
Jul 22, 2018 · T FranklinPeaceful secluded campground with only aFew spots so it’s not crowded. One side of the loop is river front, the other side is right on the highway so you hear and see the cars go by. The vault bathrooms smell strongly of the chemicals they have to use.*If you have small children many of these sites are dangerous, there’s no barrier between them and a cliff to the river or on the other side they could run into highway traffic. Jul 10, 2018 · Nikki TThe campground has various sized sites be aware of #23; this site is tiny and not meant for a large two-room tent. Really it only has room for one car too. #24 is much bigger with room for two tents and two cars. These are both on the highway side, which is a drawback but not too bad. The site host is friendly and has a beautiful sweet dog.
Aug 02, 2019 · Peggy GReservations online were easy. Vital stats that were hard to find though:1.NO running water. Anywhere. Vault toilets and a hand pump2. The firepits DO have grates to cook over.3. Wood is avail, it was $7/bundle on a holiday weekend.4. It's shady so bring a jacket, but the sunshine is just at roadside if you want to be warm5. No animals sited. From chipmunk to raccoons to bears. Didn't need a food safety container.6. NO recycling, just garbage bins. If you want go recycle, take it home
May 28, 2018 · Ursula KuhnI regret telling you about this hidden gem (why am I even typing this right now!?). Lockaby is a simple campground (pit toilets and hand-pumped well water). There aren't a ton of amenities and that's just perfect, because the campground itself is lovely. The sites are spread out beneath towering trees that keep the ground cool and shaded most of the day (adding to that the high hills to the East and West and things never really heat up in the campground). That makes this place perfect for hot summer days down at the river (which the campground is next to) and long evenings relaxing by a fire that is just barely necessary due to the coolness of the air preserved by the trees.I REALLY shouldn't have told you about this!
