Welcome to Camping Near Me, your ultimate guide to finding incredible outdoor experiences. Today, we're casting our spotlight on Lower Lee Vining Campground, a truly stunning and highly-regarded destination nestled in the breathtaking Eastern Sierra of California. Located at Lee Vining, CA 93541, USA, this campground offers an exceptional opportunity to immerse yourself in nature while being conveniently close to some of California's most iconic natural attractions. For inquiries, you can contact the campground or the Inyo National Forest service at (760) 873-2400 or +1 760-873-2400.
Lower Lee Vining Campground boasts a truly picturesque and inviting environment. Situated along the serene **Lee Vining Creek** at an elevation of approximately 7,300 feet, the campground is surrounded by towering pines and forested terrain. This provides ample natural shade and a classic "foresty feel," making it a refreshing escape, especially during warmer months. The proximity to the creek is a major draw, offering soothing sounds of flowing water and direct access for recreational activities.
The campsites themselves are consistently praised for being **very spacious**, allowing campers plenty of room to spread out and enjoy their privacy. Most sites are large and well-shaded, contributing to a comfortable and cozy atmosphere. The campground is located just outside the charming little town of Lee Vining, ensuring that while you feel immersed in nature, essential services and local attractions are just minutes away. The overall location is described as stunning, with impressive views of the towering granite peaks and Tioga Pass as it carves its way up to the eastern entrance of Yosemite National Park. While cell service can be poor in the immediate campground area, this often enhances the feeling of a true escape into the wilderness.
One important environmental consideration is the presence of **wildlife**, particularly bears. The campground host, Kevin, is noted for keeping campers well-informed and aware of bear activity, emphasizing the need for proper food storage. The creek, while beautiful, is also described as having a **strong current**, requiring caution, especially with pets, to prevent accidents. This highlights the wild and untamed nature of the surrounding landscape, adding to the authentic outdoor experience.
Lower Lee Vining Campground provides a range of essential services and amenities that contribute to a comfortable and hassle-free camping experience. The restrooms feature **clean vault toilets**, which are well-maintained and appreciated by campers. **Drinking water is available close by** at the campsites, a significant convenience that eliminates the need to carry in large quantities of water.
Each campsite is well-equipped with a **picnic table**, a **fire ring with a grate**, and a **food storage locker (bear box)**. The fire rings allow for traditional campfires (though campers should always check for current fire restrictions in the Inyo National Forest, as conditions can change). The bear boxes are crucial for storing all food items and scented products securely, protecting them from the active bear population. Firewood is also available for sale from the camp host, further adding to convenience. The campground is well-maintained, with limbs cut back, making it accessible for various vehicle sizes, including larger RVs.
A standout feature of Lower Lee Vining Campground is its **camp host**. Multiple reviews enthusiastically praise the camp host, Kevin, describing him as "incredible," "awesome," "super friendly," and "the best host ever." Their dedication to keeping campers informed about bear activity, ensuring clean campgrounds, and offering tons of help significantly enhances the visitor experience, fostering a welcoming and safe environment. This level of hospitality is a major asset to the campground.
The campground accommodates a variety of camping setups, including **tents, trailers, and RVs** (up to 32ft or more, with some sites specifically noted as pull-through friendly). While some sites are walk-to (from the parking area), they are still conveniently close to the creek. The campground operates on a **first-come, first-served (FCFS) basis** for its 52 campsites, meaning no advance reservations can be made. This requires campers to arrive early, especially during peak seasons, to secure a spot. The pricing is also very attractive, typically around $14 per night, with discounts (e.g., $7) for those with certain passes, making it a very **budget-friendly** option.
Lower Lee Vining Campground's location is one of its most remarkable features, serving as an exceptional **basecamp for exploring the Eastern Sierra**. Its proximity to the eastern entrance of **Yosemite National Park** via Tioga Pass (though note that Tioga Pass is subject to seasonal closures due to snow) makes it an ideal spot for those looking to explore Yosemite without the higher costs or crowds of staying inside the park. It's also just a couple of miles from the unique **Mono Lake**, a fascinating natural landmark with its iconic tufa towers, offering incredible photo opportunities and ecological interest.
The direct access to **Lee Vining Creek** allows for excellent **trout fishing**, a popular activity among visitors, as noted by happy campers catching trout in the stream. Beyond fishing, the surrounding Inyo National Forest provides abundant opportunities for **hiking, mountain biking, backpacking, hunting, picnicking, and wildlife viewing**. The option to simply enjoy walking around the camp after a long day of hiking is also a cherished feature for many.
The campground is **pet-friendly**, allowing dogs on a leash, which is a significant plus for those traveling with their canine companions. However, dog owners are advised to keep their pets on a leash near the strong creek currents, as even strong swimmers can be swept away. The combination of easy accessibility, natural beauty, and a wide array of recreational activities within a short drive makes Lower Lee Vining a highly versatile and appealing campground.
Lower Lee Vining Campground is an outstanding choice for **budget-conscious travelers** seeking a beautiful and amenity-rich basecamp in the Eastern Sierra. It's perfect for **families, couples, and solo adventurers** who appreciate spacious campsites, clean facilities, and direct access to outdoor recreation. For those looking for an authentic camping experience with the added benefit of an exceptionally helpful camp host, this campground is a top recommendation within the "Camping Near Me" category.
To secure a spot, especially during weekends or peak seasons, plan to **arrive early** due to its first-come, first-served policy. Be prepared for variable mountain weather by packing layers. Bring all necessary gear, including fishing equipment if you plan to enjoy the creek. Always practice bear-safe food storage by utilizing the provided bear boxes. If traveling with dogs, remember the leash policy and be extra cautious around the strong creek currents. Consider purchasing firewood from the host upon arrival.
Take advantage of the campground's strategic location. Spend time exploring Mono Lake, drive the scenic Tioga Pass (when open) into Yosemite, or venture out on the numerous hiking trails in the Inyo National Forest. The warmth and helpfulness of the camp host, as enthusiastically shared by previous visitors, promise a truly enjoyable and memorable stay. Lower Lee Vining Campground is a beloved destination that many hope will "be around for many more years," testament to its enduring appeal.

Sep 26, 2022 · Michelle BartonThe Camp host is awesome. Super friendly and tons of help. The campgrounds were clean and easily accessible. I have a 32ft RV and found a beautiful spot that I could drive through. All the limbs were cut back so first time not scratching LoL. $7 if you have a pass $14 if you don't.The creek is strong so if you have a dog keep them on a leash. I am so glad I did. Even the best of swimmers have been swept away by the current I was told, don't let it be your furry friend!
May 22, 2019 · mel “Gypsyatheart” mBeautiful campground on a creek. No water or dump station but has rustic toilet facilities. Definitely get food from Whoa Nelly Deli at the Mobil station down at hwy 395, trust me. Lee Vining close cute little town with general store etc. Day trip up to Saddleback Lake or Yosemite, or go explore Mono Lake.
Oct 24, 2018 · M DubPretty campground with plenty of bathrooms and around 40 campsites, cheep at $14 per night, next to a running river with aspen trees and pines all around. Good clean flat campground with bear boxes at each one, would recommend! Creek is kind of loud at night of you camp right next to it.
Oct 04, 2022 · Bryce EdmondsonIt´s been 2 years ago and my thoughts are still circling back to the lovely host Kevin and his friends Jeff George and Bryan. Our car broke down during Memorial Weekend and they helped us out with food, kindness and some great campfire stories! Stop over, enjoy the camping and say hi to them! Kevin we love you!Guillaume x Nathalie
