Murray Bay Campground Introduce
For local users searching for "camping near me" in the Essex, Montana area, Murray Bay Campground, located in Essex, MT 59916, USA, offers a potentially rewarding experience for those seeking a more remote and natural setting. While specific amenities and environmental details aren't extensively described, the available customer reviews provide valuable insights into its appeal. It's worth noting that campsites here can be "hot commodities," suggesting it's a popular destination, and some sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
The environment surrounding Murray Bay Campground seems to be a significant part of its charm. One reviewer mentioned it being "well worth the 20 mile drive from town," implying that the location offers a desirable natural setting that justifies the travel. While the specific landscape isn't detailed, being in Montana near Essex suggests proximity to mountains, forests, and potentially lakes or rivers, contributing to a scenic camping experience. Another reviewer mentioned being prepared for a "20+ miles dirt/gravel road" to access the campground, indicating a more rustic and possibly secluded location away from well-paved routes. This might appeal to those looking for a more immersive wilderness experience.
In terms of services and features, the cleanliness of the facilities is a notable positive aspect. One reviewer specifically stated that the "bathrooms very clean!" This is an important factor for many campers and suggests that the campground management takes hygiene seriously. Additionally, the presence of a camp host, Shane, is highlighted as a significant benefit. The reviewer described Shane as "so nice" and appreciated the "tips and suggestions" provided, especially as it was their first time tent camping as an adult. A friendly and knowledgeable camp host can greatly enhance the camping experience, offering assistance and local insights.
Another feature mentioned is the spacing between campsites. The reviewer noted that "Campsites were spaced far enough apart," which contributes to a sense of privacy and a less crowded camping experience. This is often preferred by campers who want to enjoy the natural surroundings without feeling too close to their neighbors.
The fact that campsites can be difficult to reserve in advance ("we couldn't reserve any a month out") indicates the campground's popularity. This might suggest that it's located in a particularly beautiful or desirable area, attracting many visitors. For local users, this highlights the importance of planning ahead and potentially being prepared to utilize the first-come, first-served spots if advance reservations are not possible.
While the reviews don't explicitly detail amenities like water access, fire pits, or picnic tables, the mention of clean bathrooms implies the presence of at least basic facilities. Given its likely more remote location (implied by the dirt/gravel road), the focus might be more on the natural setting and basic comforts rather than extensive services.
There is no specific promotional information available in the provided reviews. However, the positive experiences shared by campers act as a strong endorsement. The combination of a nice campground, a great and helpful host, clean facilities, and well-spaced campsites makes Murray Bay Campground an attractive option for those seeking "camping near me" in a more natural Montana setting.
For local users in the Essex area, or those willing to travel a bit for a potentially more secluded experience, Murray Bay Campground seems like a place worth considering. The friendly camp host, clean bathrooms, and spacious campsites are definite positives. However, be prepared for a drive that includes a significant stretch of dirt or gravel road, which might affect the cleanliness of your vehicle and require careful driving.
To get more specific information about Murray Bay Campground, such as the availability of water, fire pits, reservation policies for any reservable sites, and the exact nature of the first-come, first-served system, local users would need to seek additional details from other sources. This could include contacting local forestry or parks services, or searching for more comprehensive reviews or information online. Given its popularity, understanding the reservation process is particularly important.
In conclusion, Murray Bay Campground offers a Montana camping experience characterized by a nice environment (worth a 20-mile drive), a great and helpful camp host named Shane, clean bathrooms, and well-spaced campsites. The access via a 20+ mile dirt/gravel road suggests a more remote setting. For local users searching for "camping near me" who appreciate these qualities and are prepared for the road conditions, Murray Bay Campground could be an excellent choice for a getaway in the Montana wilderness. Remember to plan ahead due to its popularity and the potential need to rely on first-come, first-served availability.

Murray Bay Campground Reviews
This was my first time camping as an adult and we flew in from out of town. Campsites are hot commodities apparently and we couldn't reserve any a month out so we prayed we could get one of the FCFS spots. Thankfully we did at Murray Bay and it was well worth the 20 mile drive from town. Shane the camp host was so nice and gave us tips and suggestions since it was out first time tent camping. Campsites were spaced far enough apart, bathrooms very clean! This place will hold a special place in my heart and can't wait to be back!
Sep 16, 2020 · Alexis VillarenteVery nice campground with a great host. Be prepared to get your equipment dirty from 20+ miles dirt/gravel road.
Jun 13, 2024 · jesse williamsonQuiet campground that had nice quick access to the water. At the water was a bench and firepit. Would go back, but be warned it was 20 plus miles of Gravel road. High quality road but super, super dusty. Deer came right up to the campsite multiple times.
Jun 04, 2023 · Jack KempI stayed at this campground in Site #15 during the summer of 2019. Both the campground and the campsite were well-maintained and beautiful. The views were breathtaking, and the lake was easily accessible. The friendly hosts added to the positive experience. Despite the 45-60 minute drive from Hungry Horse, the stunning scenery and quick lake access made it worthwhile. Although daily drives to Glacier National Park were tiring, the overall trip was highly recommended, especially Site #15.
Aug 08, 2023 · BartWe had never been to Murray Bay before but we had a fabulous experience. The camp Host Jeffery was the best we had ever had. He kept the camp in perfect condition from the restrooms to the sites themselves. It was extremely tidy and he was so accommodating. The campsites are a great size but defiantly more geared toward trailers than tents. We were tent camping and thankfully got one of the more tent friendly sites (9) however the fire pit was on a slight hill so not friendly to chairs. The group site (15) was wonderful and has amazing views. Great pull thru parking and very level but no designated tent area so we had to set up in the driveway. Our party started at site 9&10 but when our reservation was done Jeffery offered us the group site to stay an extra day over the holiday weekend. The water access is wonderful, we have small kids and with so much level water front it was the perfect set up. We had a blast with kayaks and paddle boards and the rope swing. We highly recommend it and will be back!
