New River State Park - 221 Access

New River State Park Rd, Laurel Springs, NC 28644, USA

While visiting friends in West Jefferson, NC, we camped at New River State Park from June 11 to 17, 2024 . The park has several campsites with different access points, but the only one with RV sites is the US 121 access area. The rest are either walk-in tent sites or paddle-in sites along the river. (The New River is a National Wild and Scenic River that is unique in that it flows south to north from North Carolina into Virginia and West Virginia. It is known for its great paddling and fishing opportunities.)Our campsite was conveniently located across from the bathhouse. It offered easy access, was semi-shaded, and had all the necessary amenities including electricity, water, and sewer. The site was equipped with a picnic table, lantern pole, and fire ring, making it a comfortable and convenient choice. The campground, including the bathhouse, was well-maintained. However, I found it more convenient to take my showers in the RV because I was having issues regulating the water temperature in the bathhouse. When we arrived at the campsite on Tuesday, many of the campers had vacated, but by Thursday, the campground had begun to fill again. Even with a full campground, the park was quiet. There were many wildflowers along the campground road, including common milkweed that was just beginning to bloom and was visited by lots of butterflies and bees.Hikes in the park can be accessed from the campground. They are well-shaded, easy, and great for walking our dogs. While we enjoyed hiking in the park, the real bonus was that there were many other beautiful places to explore and hike within an hour’s drive. We went to Mount Jefferson, Stone Mountain, and Grayson Highlands parks to hike while staying at New River. The visitors center in the park seemed new. It was easy walking distance from the campground. The gift shop had the usual tee shirts, coffee mugs, stickers, and some nice nature guides, but very little in terms of camping supplies. The volunteer there told me that it was low on inventory due to the end of the fiscal year and a buying freeze until August. We also noticed several large picnic shelters and community centers that could be rented in the park.Overall, Bob and I, along with the dogs, thoroughly enjoyed our stay at New River State Park, and we look forward to camping there again. - Donna Bollenbach
