Panhandle Campground Introduce
For local users in Washington and those searching for "camping near me," Panhandle Campground, located on LeClerc Rd N, Cusick, WA 99119, USA, offers a small, 15-site campground experience with some appealing features and some potential drawbacks, according to recent camper reviews. You can reach them at (509) 447-7300 or +1 509-447-7300 for reservations and inquiries.
When seeking the ideal "camping near me" destination, factors such as location, site features, access to amenities, and the overall ambiance of the campground are crucial. Panhandle Campground's location near Cusick, Washington, places it in a potentially scenic area of the state. Cusick is a town in Pend Oreille County, known for its proximity to the Pend Oreille River and the surrounding natural beauty of northeastern Washington. A location on LeClerc Rd N suggests the campground may offer relatively easy access, although one review notes its proximity to road noise.
According to camper feedback, Panhandle Campground boasts a lovely setting right on the water, presumably the Pend Oreille River. Several sites (specifically 1-7) are mentioned as being waterside, although direct water access appears to be more limited, with only sites 1 and a portion of 4 having easy entry. Sites 2 and 3 are highlighted for their amazing river views, with site 3 being described as particularly picturesque and having the best water access, making it a potentially highly desirable spot.
However, the same reviewer who praised site 3 also pointed out a significant drawback: the intermittent "waft of outhouse stench" despite the nearby and clean bathrooms. This suggests a potential design or ventilation issue with the restroom facilities that could impact the enjoyment of some of the prime riverside campsites. This is a crucial point for prospective campers to consider, especially those sensitive to odors.
Another major issue reported by the same reviewer was the complete closure of all water faucets for a purification process during their stay, with no alternative water source provided and no prior notification. This lack of a basic necessity and the absence of communication are serious concerns regarding the campground's management and preparedness. While the reviewer hoped this was specific to their trip, it highlights the importance of confirming the availability of essential services before arrival.
In contrast to these negative experiences, another reviewer who stayed in site 8 with a 30' 5th wheel described Panhandle Campground as "absolutely great camping" and a "great little 15 site campground." They noted that most of the sites are secluded, offering a sense of privacy, and specifically reiterated that sites 2 and 3 have amazing river views. This positive feedback suggests that while there may be issues, some campers have had enjoyable experiences, particularly those in sites not directly affected by the reported noise or odor issues.
The information that sites 8-12 are located next to the road corroborates the first reviewer's complaint about morning noise from trucks. This is an important factor for light sleepers or those seeking a truly tranquil camping experience; requesting a riverside site (1-7) might mitigate this, although availability and the potential for other issues (like the reported odor) would need to be considered.
The first reviewer also raises a pertinent question about the placement of the bathrooms, suggesting they might have been better located on the street side of the campground rather than in a prime riverside camping area. This reflects a potential design flaw that could detract from the enjoyment of some of the most scenic and desirable sites.
Based on the limited information, Panhandle Campground appears to offer a small, intimate camping experience with the allure of waterfront sites and river views. The seclusion of most sites could be a significant draw for those seeking privacy. However, potential drawbacks include noise from the adjacent road (primarily affecting sites 8-12), intermittent odor issues near the riverside bathrooms (potentially affecting sites 1-4), and the possibility of unexpected service disruptions like the water shutoff. The positive review suggests that these issues may not affect all campers equally, and the beauty of the location and the privacy of the sites are definite advantages.
For local users searching for "camping near me" in the Cusick area, Panhandle Campground presents a mixed bag. The waterside location and potential for river access and views are attractive features. The small size of the campground (15 sites) could also appeal to those seeking a less crowded experience. However, the reported noise, odor, and water service issues are significant concerns that prospective campers should address directly with the campground management before booking.
When contacting Panhandle Campground, it would be wise to inquire specifically about the likelihood of road noise affecting their chosen site, the current status of the bathroom facilities and any potential odor issues, and the reliability of the water supply. Asking about the specific amenities offered at each site type (e.g., fire pits, picnic tables) and whether there are any restrictions or recommendations for different sizes of camping equipment (as one reviewer mentioned a 30' 5th wheel fitting in site 8) would also be helpful.
Given the contrasting reviews, it's difficult to offer strong promotional information. However, the campground could emphasize its picturesque riverside location, the secluded nature of most campsites offering privacy, and the potential for direct water access and stunning river views from certain sites (like 2 and 3). Transparency regarding the potential for road noise in some areas and any known issues with the bathroom proximity to prime sites would also be advisable for managing expectations.
In conclusion, Panhandle Campground near Cusick, WA, offers a small, waterfront camping experience with the potential for beautiful views and secluded sites. However, prospective campers should be aware of reported issues regarding road noise, intermittent odors near the riverside bathrooms, and the possibility of service disruptions. Local users searching for "camping near me" should weigh the allure of the location and privacy against these potential drawbacks and are strongly encouraged to contact the campground directly for the most up-to-date information before making a reservation.

Panhandle Campground Reviews
It's a lovely spot right on the water, but there are a few problems that make it so we won't be back: 1) Incredibly noisy in the morning with trucks on the road right next to the campground. 2) Arguably one of the most picturesque sites and with the best water access (site #3) lures you in, then as soon as you've set up your site and have a moment to take it all in, you realize that even though the bathrooms are clean and, how lucky for you, nearby, you continually get a waft of outhouse stench. 3) Lastly, and I'm hoping for everyone else's sake specific to our trip, ALL of the water faucets were closed off for some sort purification process, with no alternatives and no previous notification. If you do decide to camp here for yourself, sites 1-7 are water side (though only 1-kind of 4 have access) and sites 8-12 are next to the road. The biggest question we're left with is "why build the bathrooms in one of the prime camping spots, esp on the river side of the campground rather than street side?" At least we only had one night planned here.

Jul 26, 2020 · Scott & Marlys TaylorPeaceful camping on the Pend Oreille River. Host was wonderful. Campsites were clean.
Jun 24, 2020 · Dan DuplerBeen camping here for years because of the river access, but the past two seasons have been full of people partying loudly all night long. The camp host is pretty rude. If you like peaceful camping, this isn't the place for you.
Jul 06, 2023 · DavisAbsolutely beautiful and peaceful. Manager was very friendly but a bit to up into your business. There is city water hook ups but no way to hook up. The turn spout is not on it so we had to Macgyver our water into the trailer. It was pretty fun to do it though. Definitely going back.
