Based on recent customer reviews, this campground provides a clean and well-maintained environment with a variety of amenities and features that cater to families, fishing enthusiasts, and nature lovers alike. Let's delve into the details of what South Skookum Lake Campground has to offer.
The environment of South Skookum Lake Campground is centered around the beautiful South Skookum Lake. Reviewers consistently mention the lake's appeal, noting that it is "beautiful" and offers a "decent temperature" for swimming. The presence of two docks enhances the lake experience, providing convenient access for both fishing and swimming activities. This lakeside setting creates a picturesque and tranquil atmosphere, ideal for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and immerse themselves in nature.
The campground itself is praised for its cleanliness, with one reviewer explicitly stating that it was "very clean." This attention to maintenance contributes significantly to a positive camping experience. The campsites are described as "spacious," offering ample room for families and their camping gear. Each spot is equipped with "nice fire pits" that include a practical "swing over grill," perfect for cooking meals outdoors over an open flame. This thoughtful feature adds to the convenience and enjoyment of campsite cooking.
In terms of services, the camp hosts at South Skookum Lake Campground are consistently highlighted for their friendliness and engagement with campers. One reviewer shared a heartwarming experience where the camp hosts stopped by with "coloring sheets as well as a scavenger hunt sheet" for the children, with a prize awarded upon completion. This level of personal touch and dedication to creating a positive experience, especially for families, is a significant asset of the campground.
The campground also provides essential amenities for a comfortable stay. Reviewers noted the presence of "nice camping bathrooms," indicating that clean and well-maintained facilities are available for guests. A "water pump" is also mentioned, ensuring access to potable water within the campground. Furthermore, each campsite is equipped with "brand new giant wooden tables," offering a sturdy and convenient surface for meals and other activities.
A notable feature of South Skookum Lake Campground is the provision of "bear containers in every campsite." This is a crucial safety measure in bear country, ensuring the safe storage of food and other scented items, protecting both campers and wildlife. This proactive approach to safety demonstrates responsible campground management.
For those who enjoy hiking, South Skookum Lake Campground offers a "nice 1.5 mile hike" that loops around the lake. This trail provides an opportunity to explore the surrounding scenery and enjoy the natural beauty of the area at a leisurely pace. The accessibility of this trail directly from the campground is a significant advantage for outdoor enthusiasts.
While the overall experience at South Skookum Lake Campground is highly positive, one reviewer mentioned that the price of "$27 a night per campsite" was perceived as "pretty steep for a campsite." However, this same reviewer also acknowledged that "considering all the amenities though it makes sense." This suggests that while the cost might be higher than some basic campgrounds, the value derived from the clean facilities, spacious sites, lake access, and other amenities justifies the price for many visitors.
Regarding firewood, the campground offers it for sale at "$10 per pack of 5-6 logs." However, for campers looking to save on costs, one reviewer noted the possibility of foraging for wood nearby the campsite. They advised bringing a hatchet, as there are "plenty of dead trees around to get some good logs." This provides an alternative for those willing to put in a little effort to gather their own firewood, although purchasing it on-site offers convenience.
The reviews indicate that the campground can be less crowded at the beginning of the week, which might be a consideration for local users seeking a quieter camping experience. This could be an ideal time to visit and take advantage of the peaceful atmosphere and uncrowded lake access.
In summary, South Skookum Lake Campground offers a well-rounded camping experience centered around a beautiful lake in Usk, Washington. Its clean and spacious campsites with fire pits and grill swings, coupled with amenities like clean bathrooms, a water pump, and new picnic tables, provide a comfortable base for outdoor adventures. The friendly camp hosts add a personal touch, and the availability of bear containers ensures safety. The lake itself is ideal for fishing and swimming, and the 1.5-mile trail around it is perfect for a scenic hike. While the nightly rate might be perceived as slightly higher, the overall value, considering the amenities and the quality of the campground, appears to be well-regarded by visitors. South Skookum Lake Campground Reviews
My family and I had a great time, the campground was very clean and the spots were spacious with nice fire pits with a swing over grill. The camp hosts even stopped by to drop some coloring sheets as well as a scavenger hunt sheet that when completed they were given a prize. We camped at the beginning of the week and it wasn't very busy. The lake is beautiful and the two docks make for fun fishing and swimming.
Jun 29, 2023 · James SchellerPlace is really nice, bear containers in every campsite, nice camping bathrooms, water pump and brand new giant wooden tables. Camp hosts were really friendly, the lake is a decent temperature and the trail around it is a nice 1.5 mile hike. My only complaint is the price… $27 a night per campsite is pretty steep for a campsite. Considering all the amenities though it makes sense. You can buy your own firewood for $10 per pack of 5-6 logs but I was able to forage for wood nearby the campsite and make do. If you bring a hatchet there are plenty of dead trees around to get some good logs.
Aug 04, 2023 · Nathan MillesIt was a terrible experience. The camp host harrassed us the whole time we were there. We were planning on staying a week but left after three days. I asked the host what his problems were and he said my kind didn't belong there. Referring to my skin color I think. I asked for a refund for the two days I paid for but wasn't going to stay and he refused got upset and started yelling I was scared for my safety. Couldn't leave fast enough. He followed us a half mile outside the campground. Racism is strong at skookum campground.
Jul 16, 2023 · Mark HagensenNo hook ups. Quiet and peaceful. Dirt road is terrible for 8 miles up but camp is beautiful. Sites right on lake as well as in woods. Pit toilets and a pump for water. Self pay.
Sep 17, 2024 · Carol HollowayThis place is beautiful, nice hiking trails, large campsites and great for kids fishing.
