Paw Paw River Campgrounds Introduce
For local residents in the Watervliet, Michigan area seeking a "camping near me" experience with a touch of local history and natural beauty, Paw Paw River Campgrounds, located at 5355 M-140, Watervliet, MI 49098, USA, presents a location steeped in community memory and offering riverside camping. According to one long-time local, this campground holds a special place in the area's history, evoking nostalgic memories of childhood visits and a connection to the St. Joe River, which meanders through the property. This reviewer highlights the availability of canoe rentals, nature hikes and walks, and a general sense of peacefulness, suggesting a tranquil environment for those looking to reconnect with nature. They also note its suitability as a stopover for RV and motorhome travelers, indicating its accessibility and amenities for various types of campers.
The environment of Paw Paw River Campgrounds appears to be defined by its proximity to the St. Joe River. The twisting course of the river throughout the property suggests opportunities for waterfront campsites and potentially scenic views. The mention of canoe rentals directly implies access to the river for paddling and exploration. Furthermore, the availability of nature hikes and walks indicates that the campground is situated in a natural setting conducive to outdoor exploration on foot. The observation of traffic stopping for geese crossing the road paints a picture of a peaceful coexistence with local wildlife, adding to the natural charm of the location for those seeking "camping near me" with opportunities for wildlife viewing.
However, it is crucial for potential local users searching for "camping near me" to consider a more recent and strongly negative review specifically concerning the tubing experience offered at Paw Paw River Campgrounds. This reviewer emphatically advises, "DO NOT GO TUBING HERE!!!! 7/14/24." They recount a tubing trip that was significantly shorter than advertised on the website (described as "roughly a 2 hour or less float" instead of 3-4 hours). More alarmingly, they describe the experience as "ABSOLUTELY DANGEROUSLY dodging trees and branches," with one instance of a tree completely covering the river, posing a potential safety hazard. The reviewer also noted the poor water quality, stating that it was "so dirty you couldn't see anything under you," which deterred swimming. Additionally, the lack of suitable spots to pull off and eat, coupled with the short duration, further contributed to a negative experience, leading the reviewer to conclude, "Would never go back. Period" and to recommend going north instead for tubing.
Considering these contrasting reviews, the services at Paw Paw River Campgrounds seem to include campsite rentals suitable for both tents and RVs/motorhomes, as well as canoe rentals for exploring the St. Joe River. The presence of nature trails suggests opportunities for walking and hiking within the campground or its immediate surroundings. The historical anecdote about a camp store (though not explicitly mentioned as currently operating) hints at the potential for on-site conveniences. However, the severe criticism of the tubing activity raises serious concerns about the safety and quality of this particular offering. Local users considering "camping near me" at Paw Paw River Campgrounds should weigh the positive aspects of the camping and natural environment against the significant negative feedback regarding the tubing experience.
The features of Paw Paw River Campgrounds appear to be its riverside location on the St. Joe River, its historical connection to the community, the availability of canoe rentals, and the presence of nature trails for walking and hiking. For RV and motorhome travelers, it offers a place to park and stay for a few days. The potential for wildlife encounters, such as the geese crossing the road, adds a unique natural element. However, the overwhelmingly negative review of the tubing, citing dangerous conditions and poor water quality, is a significant feature that cannot be ignored by prospective visitors interested in this activity.

Sometimes the traffic even stops to let the flock of geese cross the road as people watch nature at its finest. And their was no nice spots anywhere to pull off to eat. It was so short you didn't even need a coolerWould never go back. PeriodGo north
Jul 14, 2024 · Brandon Van HornFirst night staying I was threatened by one of the other campers with a hammer and had to call authorities on him. The owners let him stay. If you’re looking for a safe location to enjoy your time look anywhere else
Jul 05, 2024 · Sierra HiltibranFun campground with tent sites on the river, close to south haven, Paw Paw all sports lake with public access, close to I-94, and downtown Waterveliet. Kayak retal and shuttle. Firewood for sale onsite. Showers included in reasonable campsite fees. We liked it a lot.
Jul 22, 2024 · Kevin AustinI have been tubing here for a few years once or twice a summer. I always love it. Sometimes it's a relaxing float and sometimes it's a workout. The river decides that. I just tubed yesterday and it was totally relaxing. If you truly enjoy the outdoors and water, this is the trip for you.
