Peg Mill Shelter Introduce
Looking for the perfect "camping near me" experience in Connecticut? Peg Mill Shelter offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in nature within a secluded and peaceful environment. Located in Voluntown, CT 06384, USA, this camping cabin provides a rustic yet rewarding escape for individuals and small groups seeking an authentic outdoor adventure.
Nestled amongst the natural beauty of the region, Peg Mill Shelter boasts a fairly secluded location. Situated behind a ridge and shielded by the lush Mountain Laurel ground vegetation, the shelter offers a sense of privacy and protection from the elements, particularly the wind. Imagine waking up to the gentle sounds of nature, surrounded by the tranquility of the Connecticut wilderness.
One of the standout features of Peg Mill Shelter, as highlighted by previous visitors, is its exceptional fire pit. Described as "one of the better fire pits in the area," it provides an ideal focal point for your camping experience. Gather around a crackling fire under the starry sky, share stories, cook delicious meals, and create lasting memories with friends or family.
Adding to the serene ambiance is the presence of a nearby stream, located approximately 30 yards from the shelter. The gentle echoes of the flowing water create a soothing background soundtrack to your stay, enhancing the feeling of being truly immersed in nature's embrace. This proximity to a water source can also be convenient for certain camping needs, although it's always advisable to treat any natural water before consumption.
While the natural setting and amenities of Peg Mill Shelter are highly praised, it's important to note some considerations for your visit. Recent feedback from a camper in February 2025 indicated that the trail markings leading to the shelter were "scarce and difficult to locate the small blazed trail." Therefore, it is strongly recommended that visitors exercise caution and pay close attention while navigating to the shelter. Consider bringing a detailed map, compass, or GPS device to aid in wayfinding, especially if you are unfamiliar with the area. Arriving during daylight hours will also make it easier to locate the correct path.
For those planning a winter camping trip to Peg Mill Shelter, it's crucial to be prepared for potentially icy conditions. One experienced camper specifically advised investing in ice picks or similar traction devices for your boots. This proactive measure can significantly enhance your safety and stability while traversing potentially slippery trails during the colder months.
Overall, the feedback from those who have stayed at Peg Mill Shelter is overwhelmingly positive. Campers have enjoyed overnight stays, noting that the shelter itself is "in good shape." While the shelter is described as not being "super wide open," it comfortably accommodates smaller groups. If you are planning to camp with a large party, it's worth considering the space limitations to ensure everyone has adequate room.
Another valuable piece of information shared by a visitor is the proximity of a waterfall to the shelter, which serves as a nearby water source. The exact distance to the waterfall isn't specified, but knowing its presence can be helpful for planning your water needs during your camping trip. Again, remember to treat any natural water before drinking.
In summary, Peg Mill Shelter offers a fantastic opportunity for "camping near me" in a secluded and naturally beautiful setting in Voluntown, CT. Its highlights include a well-regarded fire pit, the soothing sounds of a nearby stream, and a generally well-maintained shelter. However, prospective visitors should be aware of potentially challenging trail markings and the need for appropriate gear, especially during winter conditions. If you are seeking a tranquil escape into nature and are prepared for a slightly adventurous trek to the shelter, Peg Mill Shelter could be the perfect camping destination for you. Embrace the peace and quiet of the Connecticut wilderness and create unforgettable outdoor experiences.

Peg Mill Shelter Reviews
Fairly secluded shelter protected from the wind by the ridge and Mountain Laurel ground vegetation. One of the better fire pits in the area. There is a stream about 30 yards away that echos just enough in the background.Be careful looking for the correct trail leading to the shelter. On Feb 22, 2025, the markings were scarce and difficult to locate the small blazed trail. If doing a winter camping trip to the site and there is a possibility of ice, invest in some ice picks to slip over your boots.
Feb 23, 2025 · Josh PailleEnjoyed staying overnight here. Shelter is in good shape. Not super wide open, so with a large group might be tough. Water is close by at the waterfall.
Aug 27, 2023 · Amber GalindoCan anyone provide the details on how to rent the shelter, is it trough DEEP or Reserve America like the camp sites? Unless it is first come first serve for thru hikers?
