I was very disappointed with this camp site. The one positive note is that there are a few campsites further away from the lake but I dont think an rv or small car would be able to go through the dirt road. The sites near the lake are only tent sites. There were a few campers set up in the parking area which took up most of the parking space that was available. The tent sites were extremely close to each other and the water so I would image, come evening, the mosquitoes would be awful! If you go further into the campsites you will find a dirt road and a few more campsites near the water. Very tight and looks difficult to get an rv in, but there was a small one parked there. There was another site that looked like it had long term residence with trash and alcohol bottles spread out around their place. We found a nice place to wade our feet in the water and play fetch with the puppers. It smelled awful and wasn't really the ideal wading water but we made it work. Unfortunately, when we got out of the water we found leeches attached to our feet. So I would say this water isn't realt meant for swimming and more for fishing and boating/floating. Then while we were cleaning our selves of the leeches, someone asked if they could have our spot since we were only day visiting. Made it awkward and felt like we had to leave. 😒 Last but not least, the toilet was disgusting, photo provided. - Quentin and Ashton Byers

Penland Lake Campground Introduce

For local residents in the Heppner, Oregon, area and those searching within the "camping near me" category, Penland Lake Campground, located in Heppner, OR 97836, offers a lakeside camping experience with a mix of both appealing features and important considerations, based on recent visitor feedback. Situated near a "beautiful lake," this campground presents opportunities for various outdoor activities, but potential visitors should be aware of certain limitations and environmental factors.

One of the primary draws of Penland Lake Campground is, as its name suggests, the lake itself. Reviewers have described it as "beautiful" and suitable for activities such as kayaking, fishing, and even picnicking. For local users who enjoy water-based recreation, the lake offers a scenic setting for paddling and angling. The potential for a relaxing picnic by the water adds to the appeal for a day trip or a longer camping stay.

In terms of camping arrangements, Penland Lake Campground appears to primarily cater to tent campers, especially for sites located closer to the water. One visitor noted that "the sites near the lake are only tent sites." This is an important piece of information for local campers with RVs or larger vehicles. While there might be "a few campsites further away from the lake" accessible via a dirt road, the reviewer expressed doubt about the suitability of this road for RVs or small cars. Another observation mentioned that even accessing a few more campsites near the water further in on the dirt road seemed "very tight and looks difficult to get an rv in," although a small RV was reportedly parked there. This suggests that RV access might be challenging and limited to smaller units, and careful consideration of vehicle size and clearance is necessary.

Parking availability seems to be another potential issue at Penland Lake Campground. One reviewer mentioned that "a few campers set up in the parking area which took up most of the parking space that was available." This could lead to inconvenience, particularly during busier times, for both overnight campers and day visitors looking to access the lake for activities.

The proximity of the tent sites to each other and the water is also a point of concern raised by a visitor. They noted that the tent sites near the lake were "extremely close to each other and the water," leading to the anticipation of significant mosquito presence in the evening. Local campers planning to pitch tents near the lake should be well-prepared with insect repellent and appropriate netting, especially during warmer months.

Water quality for wading and swimming appears to be a significant drawback at Penland Lake. One visitor described the water where they waded as smelling "awful" and not "really the ideal wading water." Furthermore, they reported finding leeches attached to their feet after being in the water, strongly suggesting that swimming or extensive wading might not be advisable. The reviewer concluded that the water is "more for fishing and boating/floating." However, another reviewer mentioned the lake being "beautiful to Kayak on or go fishing or just picnic and stay!", which indicates that while wading and swimming might be problematic, other water activities can still be enjoyed.

Regarding facilities, Penland Lake Campground is described as having "vault toilets" and "no showers." This aligns with a more rustic camping experience. Local campers planning an overnight stay should be aware of the lack of shower facilities and either bring a solar shower or be prepared for alternative methods of cleaning, perhaps utilizing the lake water cautiously, away from areas prone to leeches and with awareness of the temperature, which is noted to be "pretty chilly by hunting season in October" but "warmer of course in the summer time!" One particularly concerning observation was the description of the toilet as "disgusting," accompanied by a photo in the original review. This suggests that the cleanliness of the restroom facilities might be a significant issue for some visitors.

An additional concern raised by a visitor was the presence of a campsite that "looked like it had long term residence with trash and alcohol bottles spread out around their place." This indicates a potential issue with site maintenance or adherence to campground rules by some users, which could detract from the overall camping experience for others.

The interaction with other visitors also seemed to create an awkward situation for one reviewer, who was asked to give up their spot since they were only day-visiting. While this might be an isolated incident, it highlights the importance of clear communication and understanding of campground etiquette, especially in potentially crowded areas.

Despite these drawbacks, the allure of Penland Lake for kayaking and fishing remains a positive aspect. Local users who prioritize these activities and are prepared for basic amenities and potential environmental challenges might still find value in visiting this campground. The mention of picnicking also suggests that it can be a pleasant spot for a day outing, provided visitors are mindful of parking and water conditions for wading.

There is no specific promotional information provided for Penland Lake Campground. Local users interested in camping here should rely on the available reviews and potentially contact the provided phone number ((541) 278-3716 or +1 541-278-3716) for the most up-to-date information on site conditions, fees (if any), and any current advisories. It would also be prudent to inquire about the accessibility for RVs, parking regulations, and the status of the restroom facilities.

In conclusion, Penland Lake Campground near Heppner, Oregon, offers a lakeside setting with opportunities for kayaking and fishing, making it potentially appealing for local outdoor enthusiasts seeking "camping near me." However, based on recent visitor experiences, there are several factors to consider, including the limited tent-only sites near the lake, potential difficulties with RV access, parking constraints, concerns about mosquitoes, water quality issues for wading (including the presence of leeches), and the reported poor condition of the toilets. Local campers who are well-prepared for a rustic experience and prioritize lake activities might find this campground suitable, but it's essential to be aware of the potential drawbacks and seek additional information before planning a visit.
