Pike Lake State Forest Campground Introduce
For local users in Michigan and those exploring the Upper Peninsula, seeking a "camping near me" experience that combines natural beauty with opportunities for wildlife observation and stargazing, Pike Lake State Forest Campground, located in Newberry, MI 49868, USA, presents an attractive option. Situated in the scenic Two Hearted River region, this campground within the Michigan State Forest system offers a rustic yet rewarding camping experience centered around the picturesque Pike Lake. Reviews from visitors highlight the area's natural charm, including unique wildlife encounters and breathtaking celestial views, while also noting a potential for some noise due to nearby residences.
The environment surrounding Pike Lake State Forest Campground is primarily defined by the stunning Pike Lake itself and the surrounding woodlands typical of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The lake offers a beautiful natural focal point for campers, likely providing opportunities for swimming, fishing, and potentially non-motorized boating, although these activities are not explicitly mentioned in the reviews. The presence of loons, specifically noted as being audible at this location, indicates a healthy and relatively undisturbed aquatic ecosystem, adding to the natural appeal. The campground's location away from significant urban light pollution allows for exceptionally clear night skies, with one reviewer marveling at the visibility of the Milky Way and numerous stars not typically seen in more populated areas. The "Two Hearted area" is known for its natural beauty, including forests, rivers, and lakes, suggesting that campers can expect a rich and diverse outdoor environment to explore beyond the immediate campground. However, one review does mention the proximity of local residences, which can occasionally lead to noise, suggesting that while immersed in nature, the campground is not entirely isolated.
As a State Forest Campground, Pike Lake typically offers more basic services designed to support a rustic camping experience while preserving the natural environment. Based on the reviews and general characteristics of Michigan State Forest campgrounds, the services and amenities likely include:
Designated Campsites: Individual campsites suitable for tents and potentially smaller RVs (without hookups), typically marked with a post and possibly including a picnic table and fire ring.
Fresh Water Pump: A significant amenity mentioned in one review, providing access to potable water for drinking and basic needs.
Clean Twin Vault Toilets: The presence of clean vault toilets (non-flush pit toilets) indicates a focus on basic sanitation.
Parking Areas: Designated parking spots are usually available near the campsites.
Carry-In/Carry-Out Trash Policy: It is highly probable that campers are required to take all their trash with them to maintain the cleanliness of the natural area.
Limited or No Hookups: State Forest Campgrounds generally do not offer electrical, water, or sewer hookups for RVs, catering more to self-sufficient campers.
Potential for Boat Launch: Given the presence of Pike Lake, there might be a basic boat launch for small watercraft, although this is not confirmed.
The features that make Pike Lake State Forest Campground a noteworthy "camping near me" destination for local users include:

Pike Lake State Forest Campground Reviews
Awesome place! This place was the only place that we could hear loons on our trip. We stayed here towards the end of the week trip. It was very clear the first night we were there. We were able to see the Milky Way in the night sky. Along with so many more stars that aren’t able to be seen in the city.
Sep 26, 2024 · Life Spirits ParanormalNice campground in the Two Hearted area. Fresh water pump and clean twin vault toilets. Beautiful Pike lake. The only con would be all the local residences surrounding the campground... Makes it a busy (noisy) area! Overall a nice place to camp.
Sep 26, 2022 · Rick PostCampground is rustic, with less than 10 campsites. All but 2 campsites are lakefront, with the 2 non lakefront campsites being close to the outhouses. Boat launch ramp is nearby. Water pump not working, but signs are up stating that it will be fixed and to use a different water pump at a nearby campground. Lake allows for motorized boats like pontoon boats, with access for other residents on the lake. Depending on the time of year you come, bring bug spray as it may be needed. Visit was quiet, but could see how it could be noisy. The campground is good, just a little maintenance (weed whacking, leveling a campsite or two) to make it great.
