Ponderosa Campground and RV Park Introduce
Are you a local resident or traveler passing through the Roanoke Rapids and Weldon, North Carolina area, seeking a "camping near me" option for your RV or camping needs? Ponderosa Campground and RV Park, located at 100 Ponderosa Rd, Weldon, NC 27890, USA, presents itself as a potentially quiet and conveniently situated park just off I-95. Based on the available customer reviews, the park receives mixed feedback, with some praising its location and owner while others express concerns about its basic amenities and pricing.
Environment and Location: Situated in Weldon, North Carolina, Ponderosa Campground and RV Park is described by one reviewer as "quiet," suggesting a peaceful environment that may be appealing to those seeking a respite from noise. Its location is also highlighted as being "just off I-95" and the "best campground and RV park near Roanoke Rapids, NC," indicating its convenience for both transient travelers and those looking for a more local stay near Roanoke Rapids. Weldon is a small town in Halifax County, known for its historical significance and proximity to the Roanoke River. The "Ponderosa" in its name might suggest the presence of pine trees or a more open, ranch-like setting, although this is not explicitly confirmed in the reviews. The surrounding environment likely offers a mix of rural landscapes typical of eastern North Carolina. For local users in the Roanoke Rapids and Weldon areas, Ponderosa Campground and RV Park offers a nearby option for RV parking and camping with easy access to the interstate.
Services and Features (Based on User Reviews): The available reviews provide contrasting perspectives on the services and features offered at Ponderosa Campground and RV Park:
- Quiet Atmosphere: A positive aspect mentioned by one reviewer is that "The park is quiet," which can be a significant draw for campers seeking a peaceful environment.
- Spacious Sites (Implied): While not explicitly stated, the fact that it accommodates RVs suggests the presence of reasonably sized sites suitable for parking and setting up RVs.
- Basic Park: One reviewer describes it as "a basic park," which is further elaborated by the mention of missing amenities such as "no laundry" and "no bathrooms." This suggests that the park may primarily cater to self-contained RVs or campers who do not require these on-site facilities.
- Lack of Regular Maintenance (Seasonal): A concern raised in one review is that "in summer they don't cut the grass frequently," leading to "long enough" grass that becomes "very buggy." This indicates a potential issue with grounds maintenance during the warmer months, which could impact the comfort of campers.
- Potentially Excessive Pricing: Both reviewers touch upon the cost, with one stating, "I think it is too expensive for what it offers" and the other noting, "It seems to me that the charge is excessive per additional week." This suggests that the pricing might be perceived as high relative to the amenities and services provided.
- Helpful Owner: A significant positive aspect is the praise for the owner, Greg, who is described as "awesome!" This suggests that while the park might be basic in terms of amenities, the owner's positive attitude and service contribute to a good experience for some guests.
- Suitable for Various Stays: The park is recommended "if your passing through or need a place to settle in for a week or a few months," indicating its suitability for both short-term and potentially longer-term stays.
- Convenient Location off I-95: Its proximity to the interstate is highlighted as a major advantage, making it easily accessible for travelers.
Promotional Information and Appeal to Local Users (Based on Mixed Feedback): For local users searching for "camping near me," Ponderosa Campground and RV Park presents a mixed bag of potential benefits and drawbacks:
- Quiet Local Option: If you prioritize a quiet camping environment near Weldon and Roanoke Rapids, this park might be suitable, especially if you are self-sufficient in terms of laundry and bathroom facilities.
- Convenient Access for Travelers: Its location just off I-95 makes it a convenient stopover for local residents who might be embarking on longer RV trips or for friends and family visiting from out of state.
- Potentially Suitable for Extended Stays: If you need a place to settle in for a week or a few months in the Weldon area, the park is presented as an option, although you should consider the pricing for longer durations.
- Positive Owner Interaction: The "awesome" owner, Greg, suggests a personal touch and helpful service that can enhance your stay despite the basic nature of the park.
However, local users should also be aware of the potential drawbacks mentioned in the reviews:
- Basic Amenities: The lack of laundry and bathroom facilities might be a significant limitation for some campers, especially those without fully self-contained RVs or those planning longer stays.
- Potential Maintenance Issues: The issue with infrequent grass cutting in the summer and the resulting bug problem could detract from the outdoor experience. Local users planning summer stays should inquire about the current maintenance schedule.
- Perceived High Cost: The feeling that the park is "too expensive for what it offers" and that the additional weekly charges are "excessive" suggests that local users should carefully consider the pricing relative to the amenities provided and compare it with other campgrounds in the area.
Ponderosa Campground and RV Park offers a quiet location near Weldon and Roanoke Rapids, with convenient access to I-95 and a well-regarded owner. It might be a suitable option for local RV owners who are self-contained and prioritize a peaceful environment. However, potential campers should be aware of the basic nature of the park, the reported lack of laundry and bathroom facilities, potential issues with summer maintenance, and the possibility of higher pricing compared to the amenities offered. Local users are encouraged to weigh these factors against their needs and preferences when considering Ponderosa Campground and RV Park for their "camping near me" experience.
Before making a decision, local residents might want to contact the park directly to inquire about the current status of amenities, maintenance practices, and pricing, especially for longer stays. While it is praised for its quiet atmosphere and helpful owner, the lack of certain facilities and the perceived high cost are important considerations for those seeking a local camping option.

Ponderosa Campground and RV Park Reviews
The park is quiet. However, I think it is too expensive for what it offers. It is a basic park. It has no laundry, no bathrooms, in summer they don't cut the grass frequently, they let the grass grow long enough to cut it which makes it very buggy. It seems to me that the charge is excessive per additional week.
Jul 19, 2023 · Sara LopezBest campground and RV park near Roanoke Rapids, NC is in Weldon, NC! The owner, Greg, is awesome! I highly recommend this park, if your passing through or need a place to settle in for a week or a few months. A gem just off I-95.

Mar 11, 2025 · Debbie GFirst the positives: 1) availability, no need to even reserve, perhaps not the case in April during striper bass run in the Roanoke river; 2) good number of shady sites; 3) plenty of full service sites (50A service only though). The negatives: 1) no bath house; 2) sites not paved or gravelled, they are either grass or muddy messes; 3) advertise $40/day (which is on the high side for what they offer) then when you get there they charge an additional $5/day if you use heat or A/C; 4) the owner/manager Greg appears nice until there is a problem then he is very unhelpful. I left a tool on the site and it took 3 phone calls before he would answer, then he was very defensive claiming that he had looked for the tool and could not find it and that no one in the campground would take it because they were all honest people, as if he could vouch for everyone that stays there. I will not use them again and do not recommend.
Jun 08, 2024 · Hector SotolongoPerfect for what it is. We pulled in late on New Years Eve and while they were closed we were able to setup and settle with the owner in the morning after a very long drive. Full hook-ups and pull through spaces, right off I-95. Owner is very friendly and accommodating. Would recommend if you need a place to stop over for a night or two.
