Did the southern shore of South Manitou the previous year so thought we'd stay on the north end. Amazing views from the camp site. Saw this shelf cloud blow in and hammer North Manitou, an amazing display of nature's wrath. Went in mid July so the black flies were out in force. Spent alot of time out in the water to get relief. Had a great time but I much prefer North Manitou Island. There's nothing better than camping on Donner Point there. - Jason Holmes

For those searching under the category "camping near me" and seeking an adventurous island getaway within Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Popple Campground offers breathtaking views, extensive hiking opportunities, and a chance to immerse yourself in the pristine wilderness of Lake Michigan. Please note that camping on North Manitou Island requires ferry access, typically via a separate service like Manitou Island Transit, and a different level of preparation compared to mainland campgrounds.

Amazing Views and Natural Spectacles:

Popple Campground is renowned for its "amazing views" from the campsites. Imagine waking up to panoramic vistas of Lake Michigan and the surrounding island landscape. One fortunate camper even witnessed a dramatic "shelf cloud blow in and hammer North Manitou," describing it as an "amazing display of nature's wrath." This highlights the raw and untamed beauty that awaits visitors to North Manitou Island. The opportunity to camp amidst such stunning natural scenery is a primary draw for those seeking a truly memorable outdoor experience.

Extensive Hiking Trails and Exploration:

North Manitou Island, and by extension Popple Campground, serves as a gateway to "lots of trails and things to see." This makes it a paradise for hiking enthusiasts and those eager to explore the island's diverse natural and historical features. From rugged shorelines to inland forests and remnants of past settlements, the island offers a rich tapestry of exploration. Spending three days on the island, as one reviewer did, allows for a deep immersion into its trails and points of interest. The availability of numerous trails caters to various fitness levels and interests, ensuring there's something for everyone to discover.

Knowledgeable and Helpful Park Rangers:

The experience at Popple Campground and North Manitou Island is further enhanced by the presence of "awesome" park rangers. Visitors have praised their helpfulness in "answering our questions" and their extensive knowledge "about the history of the island!" This resource is invaluable for campers looking to learn more about the island's ecology, geology, and human history, enriching their overall experience and fostering a deeper appreciation for this unique environment.

Potential for Black Flies, Especially in Mid-July:

It is crucial for potential visitors to be aware of the seasonal presence of insects. One reviewer who visited in "mid July" noted that "the black flies were out in force." This can significantly impact the outdoor experience, and the reviewer mentioned spending "a lot of time out in the water to get relief." Therefore, if you are planning a trip to Popple Campground during the summer months, particularly around mid-July, it is highly recommended to "bring bug spray" and take other precautions to protect yourself from biting insects. Understanding these seasonal conditions is essential for a comfortable visit.

Comparison to South Manitou Island:

One reviewer who had previously camped on the southern shore of South Manitou Island shared a preference for the latter, stating, "I much prefer North Manitou Island. There's nothing better than camping on Donner Point there." While this is a subjective opinion, it highlights that both North and South Manitou Islands offer distinct camping experiences within Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Those considering Popple Campground might also want to research the camping options and characteristics of South Manitou Island to determine which best aligns with their preferences.

Day Trip Options to South Manitou Island:

For those staying at Popple Campground or simply visiting North Manitou Island, there are opportunities to explore South Manitou Island as well. The reviewer mentioned "options for a day trip through South Manitou Island Transit." This suggests that transportation services are available to facilitate visits between the two islands, allowing campers to experience the unique features of both during their trip to the Manitou Islands.

Ferry Access is Essential:

It is important to reiterate that Popple Campground is located on North Manitou Island, which is only accessible by ferry. The provided phone numbers, (231) 326-4700 and +1 231-326-4700, are for the mainland Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, and while they can provide information about the park in general, specific ferry schedules and reservations for Manitou Island Transit (or other ferry services) will likely need to be arranged separately. Prospective campers should research and book their ferry transportation well in advance, especially during peak season, as space may be limited.

A Wilderness Camping Experience:

Camping on North Manitou Island, including at Popple Campground, generally offers a more wilderness-oriented experience compared to mainland campgrounds. Campers should be prepared for more rustic conditions and should pack accordingly, including essentials for backcountry camping. Familiarity with Leave No Trace principles is crucial to help preserve the island's delicate ecosystem. The reward for this extra preparation is the opportunity to immerse oneself in a truly stunning and relatively remote natural environment.

Ideal for Adventurous Nature Lovers:

Popple Campground is an ideal destination for adventurous nature lovers who are seeking breathtaking scenery, extensive hiking, and a unique island camping experience. The need for ferry access and preparedness for potential insect issues are factors to consider, but the rewards of camping on North Manitou Island – the stunning views, the exploration opportunities, and the sense of remote wilderness – are significant for those who embrace this type of adventure.
