For local users seeking "camping near me" that offers a blend of natural beauty and a peaceful atmosphere, Garey Lake State Forest Campground, located at 14614, 14000 County Line Rd, Empire, MI 49630, USA, presents an appealing option. Based on recent customer reviews, this campground offers good lake access, a generally quiet environment, and sites that can accommodate both individual campers and larger groups.
The environment of Garey Lake State Forest Campground is characterized by its proximity to Garey Lake, providing "good lake access" for campers. This suggests opportunities for lake-related activities such as swimming, kayaking, or simply enjoying the waterfront. While one reviewer noted seeing people fishing without much success, the presence of the lake itself adds to the scenic appeal of the campground. The campground is described as "pretty nice" and, notably, "rarely used," which contributes to a potentially tranquil and less crowded camping experience. However, one reviewer mentioned that "you can hear the road from the campsites," which might be a consideration for those particularly sensitive to noise.
In terms of services and features, the campground is reported to have a working water pump, although one user mentioned it "just takes a bit to get going." This indicates a source of potable water is available. The campsites themselves are described as "well taken care of." Interestingly, the spacing between sites varies; some are "close together," making them "great for groups," while others are "pretty spaced apart." This variety allows the campground to cater to different camping needs, from those wanting a communal experience to those seeking more privacy. Each site likely includes standard state forest campground amenities, although these are not explicitly listed in the reviews. Typically, such campgrounds offer basic facilities like vault toilets, fire rings, and picnic tables. To confirm the full list of amenities available at Garey Lake State Forest Campground, contacting them directly might be beneficial.
A significant feature highlighted in one review is the size of the campground, which has "12 total sites." This small number of sites likely contributes to the campground being "rarely used," offering a higher chance of a secluded experience, especially outside of peak weekends. The same reviewer also mentioned that a couple of sites in the field are close enough to "double up," accommodating a "bunch of tents," further emphasizing its suitability for group camping.
Regarding promotional information, one reviewer mentioned the cost as "$15 a night," which suggests an affordable camping option. They also noted that "chances are you'll be the only one here unless it's a Fri or sat," implying that during the week, the campground is often very quiet and uncrowded. This could be a significant draw for those seeking a peaceful escape.
In summary, Garey Lake State Forest Campground offers a "pretty nice" and often quiet "camping near me" option in Empire, Michigan, with the added benefit of "good lake access." Its small size (12 sites) contributes to it being "rarely used," providing a more secluded experience for campers, especially during the week. The varying spacing of campsites allows for both group camping and more private setups. The availability of a working water pump is a practical advantage, and the reported cost of $15 per night makes it an affordable choice. While some road noise can be heard from the campsites, the overall positive feedback regarding the care of the sites and the lake access suggests a worthwhile camping destination for those looking to enjoy nature in a less crowded setting. If you value tranquility, affordability, and lake access for your "camping near me" experience, Garey Lake State Forest Campground is definitely worth considering.

Garey Lake State Forest Campground Reviews
Campsite is well taken care of. Some of the sites are close together, would be great for groups. Good lake access. I saw a bunch of people fishing (not so much with the catching). Pump does work, it just takes a bit to get going. You can hear the road from the campsites.
Jun 07, 2021 · Malcolm CampPretty nice campground that's rarely used. Has 12 total sites that are pretty spaced apart (a couple are close enough in the field that you can double up the sites and got a bunch of tents on it. $15 a night and chances are you'll be the only one here unless it's a Fri or sat.
Jun 28, 2020 · Justin HQuiet, peaceful, small rustic state forest campground which is my one of my absolute favorites! Great little lake for kayaking and fishing. Small boat launch with sandy bottom. Close to trails.
Nov 15, 2024 · Jana ElingWe camped here as a school group after Labor Day weekend. This was the most wide-open area. Other sites were more covered with trees. The lake is easily accessible.
Sep 16, 2023 · Jess FalesWe loved our campsite here! It was tucked back behind some bushes and a trio of trees, which helped to shield it from the rain, hail, and high winds we had on our trip. The campground was clean and quiet, and the restrooms were well kept up - one outhouse for men and one for women, so there was less traffic to each than some of the other state campgrounds we've been at. While the nat'l park campgrounds near by were filled, Garey Lake only had a few campers in it, even though it was the weekend. We'll definitely keep this campground in mind when we camp in this area again.
