Situated in the Platte River State Forest, this campground provides a base for exploring the surrounding scenic area, with the Platte River itself being a notable feature and the close proximity to Lake Michigan offering an added advantage for visitors.
The environment of Platte River State Forest Campground is characterized by its natural setting along the Platte River. The river is described by a reviewer as "beautiful," suggesting it offers opportunities for scenic enjoyment and potentially water-related activities. Furthermore, its location near Lake Michigan is highlighted as a "huge bonus," implying easy access to the Great Lake and its associated recreational possibilities, such as swimming, beachcombing, and more extensive boating.
However, it's important to note feedback from several visitors regarding the cleanliness of the campground. Multiple reviews mention a significant amount of "garbage around the campground," and one reviewer described the pit toilets as being "some of the worst I’ve seen," attributing this partly to people throwing garbage into them. Another guest echoed these sentiments, stating that the campground, while beautiful overall, was "definitely one of the dirtiest I've been to in awhile," and noted seeing "a lot of trash amongst areas of the campground, especially by the river."
One reviewer also pointed out that they "could hear the road from our site by the river," which might be a consideration for those particularly sensitive to noise during their camping experience. Despite these concerns, the same reviewer indicated a potential interest in returning during the summer, suggesting that the overall location and access to the river and Lake Michigan might outweigh the cleanliness issues for some.

Platte River State Forest Campground Reviews
Lots of garbage around the campground and the pit toilets are some of the worst I’ve seen (probably due to people throwing garbage in them). We could hear the road from our site by the river. The river is beautiful and being so close to Lake Michigan is a huge bonus might need to try this one again during the summer but this trip left me unimpressed.
May 06, 2024 · Trevor SullivanWas not a bad campground by any means. Unfortunately, it seems like a lot of people that come here are pretty trashy in the means of not taking what they brought. Seen a lot of trash amongst areas of the campground, especially by the river. We enjoyed ourselves and the campground in a whole is beautiful. But definitely one of the dirtiest I've been to in awhile.
Sep 18, 2023 · DannyThis place is a Gem ! Very spacious sites, plenty of shade, decent river access to cool & refresh. Hand pumps & pits. Town of Honor 5 minutes away for supplies. Can't wait to come back !
Aug 15, 2019 · Matt FronczakWhat a great deal! If you are trying to get last minute camping near sleeping bear dunes this is the place. The bathrooms are vaulted but clean. No showers. But the best thing is all the sites are spread out. Definalty some of the best rustic camping I have experienced. Stayed at site 13.
Sep 03, 2019 · Ashley PVisited in the winter, so I had the campground to myself. There are plenty of sites, but they are located fairly close together. You can hear/see the river from some sites.Firepits and picnic tables at every site. Water pump and vault toilets available.
