Winding River Campground Introduce
For local residents in the Benzonia, Michigan area searching for "camping near me," Winding River Campground, situated at 2080 Benzie Hwy, Benzonia, MI 49616, USA, presents a location with potential, particularly for those interested in fishing. You can reach them at (231) 882-5101 or +1 231-882-5101. Based on the available customer reviews, the campground offers some appealing aspects, such as friendly staff and a convenient location for fishing expeditions. However, it's also important for prospective local users to be aware of reported challenges, particularly concerning the reservation system and the amenities of the cabins.
One positive aspect highlighted by a recent visitor is the welcoming nature of the staff. The reviewer recounted arriving well before check-in time and being allowed to not only drop off gear but also access their reservation early. They described the staff as "friendly" and even had the opportunity to meet the owner and his dog. This suggests a personal and accommodating approach to customer service, which can be a significant draw for local campers seeking a friendly atmosphere.
Furthermore, the location of Winding River Campground is noted as being "about as good as it gets to use as a base camp for a fishing adventure." This implies proximity to local fishing spots, likely involving the "Winding River" mentioned in the campground's name or other nearby waterways. For local anglers looking for a convenient place to stay while pursuing their fishing activities, this campground's location could be a major advantage, offering easy access to fishing opportunities right in the vicinity.
However, a more critical review from a long-term visitor who had been coming to the location when it was known as Vacation Trailer Park raises some significant concerns. This reviewer notes that after new owners took over, there were initial "bumpy" periods, which they understood. However, their recent experience indicates a perceived decline in the campground's management, particularly concerning the reservation system.
The reservation system is described as "terrible and is wrong most of the time." The reviewer provided specific examples of these issues, including having a reservation for a "mini cabin" that was actually listed as the "new A-frame" (which turned out to be the office). Additionally, they were also erroneously listed as having a camping site reservation. While these discrepancies were eventually resolved, they point to potential inefficiencies and inaccuracies in the booking process that local users should be aware of.
The amenities of the cabins are also a point of concern raised in the review. According to the visitor, the "cabins have no amenities at all, except a bathroom and two twin beds." This suggests a very basic level of accommodation in the cabins, lacking features that some campers might expect, such as kitchenettes, common living areas, or even bedding beyond the two twin beds. Local users considering cabin rentals at Winding River Campground should be prepared for these limited amenities.
Further issues were reported regarding attempts to manage reservations. The reviewer tried to cancel a reservation for 2025 and found it to be under the wrong name. They also reported being denied a refund for the deposit. Additionally, they were surprised to find a reservation listed for 2026, which they claim was based on a months-old inquiry for dates that was never confirmed with payment. This series of issues paints a picture of a potentially disorganized reservation system that could lead to frustration and financial disputes for local campers.
The long-time visitor concluded their review by stating that the place is a "cluster" and that they would be finding a new place to stay after many years of positive memories at the location under previous ownership. This strong statement underscores the severity of the issues they experienced with the new management and the current state of the campground's operations.
Considering these contrasting reviews, local users searching for "camping near me" and considering Winding River Campground should weigh the positive aspects, such as the friendly staff and convenient location for fishing, against the reported significant issues with the reservation system and the limited amenities of the cabins. While the initial interaction with staff might be pleasant, the potential for booking errors and the basic nature of the cabin accommodations are factors that need careful consideration.
Before making a reservation, local users are strongly advised to contact Winding River Campground directly at (231) 882-5101 or +1 231-882-5101 to inquire about the current status of their reservation system, the specific amenities available in their cabins and campsites, and their cancellation and refund policies. It would be prudent to get any reservation confirmations in writing and to clarify all details before committing to a stay. While the location's proximity to fishing opportunities might be appealing, addressing the reported operational challenges is crucial for ensuring a smooth and enjoyable "camping near me" experience at Winding River Campground.

Winding River Campground Reviews
I showed up in town well before my check-in time. I asked if I could drop some gear off and was told that not only could I drop gear off, but that my reservation was available for me already. Staff was friendly, and we even got to meet the owner and his dog. The location is about as good as it gets to use as a base camp for a fishing adventure.
Mar 29, 2025 · Jace FritzlerI used to stay here when it was Vacation Trailer Park, and visited here for many years. When the new owners took over things were bumpy, and I get it. But this place has gone down hill. The reservation system it terrible and is wrong most of the time. I had reservations for one of the mini cabin, they had it as the new A-frame which was the office. They then had me on a camping site as well. Finally got that resolved. Cabins have no amenities at all, except a bathroom and two twin beds.Tried to cancel a reservation for 2025 and they had it in the wrong name. Won't refund the deposit and then said I had a reservation for 2026. Months ago I inquired about some dates for 2026, but never paid. They said I did. This place is a cluster. Too bad, I made so many memories there over 15+ years. Time to find a new place.
Nov 14, 2024 · Dan SpiegelWe had the BEST time camping at winding river this weekend. My family came for the Halloween camping, and the kids had a BLAST. There were so many activities for the kids to do, and the staff went above and beyond to make sure everyone was enjoying themselves. We’ve been Halloween camping at KOA before, and in my opinion, Winding River far exceeded that experience. Watching the salmon and steelhead swim by this time of year was so awesome. And most importantly, the sites and bathrooms were clean and tidy (which is a must for me!). We will absolutely be back!
Oct 21, 2024 · Danielle PfeilI hate to even leave a review of this nature, but we haven’t received any response from management after we were told we would be able to speak to someone on the day we checked out…..We rented the tiny home, it’s a brand new camper with lots. The camper itself is really nice, minus a small issue. The campsite that the tiny home is located on might be the worst one in the campground. It’s right next to the utility garage for the campground, so there is always something going on, and the lights are left on at night, it shines through the campsite and the security light never shuts off.The site is extremely small. The fire pit is about two feet away from the entrance rug.Upon arrival at 4:15, someone from the campground told us the office is closed? We were there to check in. She seemed a little frustrated at first bc she didn’t know anyone was checking in that day. At first I thought she was a little rude but after trying to deal with other employees and management there, I completely understand why. She soon turned it around and got us to out site, which nobody had keys for, so we waited for that as well. The flapper/valve on the toilet didn’t work, so upon arrival, the bathroom was covered in fruit flies, the walls, the mirror, the shower. We contacted them and we were told to put some lemon scent down the drain. That didn’t work. 2 employees ended up coming through the camper stating how gross it was and they apologized. We basically kept the door shut the entire time for the bathroom and used the public bathrooms there. We went to the store and bought some fruit fly traps but it just couldn’t keep up.We were overcharged over 100 dollars. The front desk had no idea how to calculate any of it, and basically said there is someone else behind the computer controlling the price? So the 175 a night as advertised is not true.We had several staff members text us to come in and pay the remaining balance, and every time we went up to do so, they couldn’t figure out the rate or what was going on. So the last day of checkout, we paid, although we knew it was more than advertised and left our contact info and we were told we would get a call from Kyle the owner. We won’t be back, and don’t recommend this place to anyone.
Aug 18, 2024 · Coleman LutzWhat a Joke!!! This place used to be a great place with great customer service and good prices! I get notified 3 days before my trip my balance is over $300 dollars after I booked and paid for a site over 12months ago. Should have been notified last year that prices increased over double! I would have canceled then. This camp site is not worth $600 dollars for a week. Now I can not get a hold of anyone who can give me a refund, and I was basically told by the lady it won't happen! After I asked if I could have the owner call me I was told I was better off trying to call back later this afternoon. Sad to see a good place take a shit so fast! Keep the money! Not worth my time to call you.
