Shippensburg, PA 17257, USA

This was my first site since I started primitive camping in September 2020. Right in the middle of the "pandemic". I've been back there a handful of times since. I do three primitive trips a year and this site is almost always hit at lease one of those times. There is a water source at the bridge split about 1/4 mile away down Milesburn. You actually pass it on the way up. Don't use this source unless you have some kind of portable filtration system, of course. - Mike Corica

Primitive Campsite #11 Introduce

For local outdoor enthusiasts seeking a genuine "camping near me" experience that embraces the simplicity of nature, Primitive Campsite #11 near Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, offers a unique opportunity. This campsite caters specifically to those who prefer a more self-sufficient and rustic camping style, often referred to as primitive camping. It provides a basic setup, allowing campers to immerse themselves fully in the natural environment with minimal reliance on developed amenities. If you are an experienced camper looking for a secluded spot to connect with nature, Primitive Campsite #11 might be of interest, though it's important to be aware of certain characteristics highlighted by previous visitors.

The environment surrounding Primitive Campsite #11 is characterized by its natural and relatively undeveloped setting. For those seeking a departure from more amenity-rich campgrounds, this site offers a chance to experience the outdoors in a more traditional way. One recurring visitor, who has been primitive camping since September 2020, indicates that this location is a frequent choice for their three annual primitive trips, suggesting a certain appeal for those who appreciate a more rugged camping experience. The presence of a water source located approximately a quarter of a mile away down Milesburn, near a bridge split, is a notable environmental feature. However, it is explicitly advised that this water source should only be used in conjunction with a portable filtration system to ensure safety.

As a primitive campsite, the services and features are intentionally minimal, focusing on providing a basic location for setting up camp. The primary feature mentioned is the availability of a water source, albeit one that requires treatment before consumption. Campers choosing Primitive Campsite #11 should be prepared to be self-sufficient, bringing their own shelter, cooking equipment, lighting, and other necessities. The lack of developed amenities is a defining characteristic of primitive camping, appealing to those who enjoy the challenge and independence it offers.

One crucial feature, or rather a lack thereof, that potential visitors must be aware of is the prohibition of swimming in the nearby reservoir. One reviewer specifically mentioned arriving during the summer with the expectation of being able to swim, only to find "no swimming" signs everywhere. This lack of swimming access is a significant point to consider, especially for those planning a trip during warmer months with the intention of water-based recreation. The absence of this information online prior to their visit led to disappointment for this particular group.

Another important characteristic of Primitive Campsite #11, as noted by a visitor, is its location directly on a public trail. This proximity to a public trail means that campers should expect limited privacy. The reviewer stated that they experienced "almost no privacy" due to trail users passing by the campsite. This is a significant factor for those who prioritize seclusion and a sense of being alone in nature during their camping trips. Experienced campers who are comfortable with occasional passersby might find this less of an issue, but those seeking a more isolated experience should be aware of this lack of privacy.

The reviews do not provide information about specific promotional offers or discounts for Primitive Campsite #11. Primitive campsites, especially those in more remote or less developed areas, typically have lower fees compared to campgrounds with extensive amenities. Local users interested in the cost of staying at Primitive Campsite #11 would likely need to consult the relevant managing authority, such as a state park or forest service, if this campsite is part of a larger public land management system. The address provided (Shippensburg, PA 17257, USA) suggests it might be located within a state forest or similar area, and contacting the relevant Pennsylvania state agency responsible for parks and forests would be the best way to obtain information on permits, fees, and regulations.

In summary, Primitive Campsite #11 near Shippensburg, PA, offers a basic and natural setting for experienced primitive campers. Its key features include a nearby water source (requiring filtration) and its location along a public trail. Potential visitors must be aware that swimming is not allowed in the nearby reservoir and that the campsite offers limited privacy due to its proximity to the public trail. While one experienced primitive camper has returned multiple times, another group of experienced campers indicated they would not return due to the lack of swimming and privacy. This highlights the importance of understanding the nature of primitive camping and the specific characteristics of this site before planning a visit. Local users seeking a truly primitive experience and who are prepared for self-sufficiency and potential lack of privacy might find this campsite suitable, but those looking for swimming opportunities or a more secluded setting should consider alternative "camping near me" options.
