I hope the camp host has changed since I tried to camp there last.Reserving a spot can take up to two days for it to happen. It's not like other camps where you select the date(s) you want to go, can see what is open and what isn't, click on the spot you want, and reserve.I didn't reserve a spot (didn't know they had switched from first-come, first-serve), and they kicked me out even though the whole camp only had two other camp spots taken. At first I was told I could go ahead and stay two nights since they weren't going to be full until later in the week. I set up camp, went riding, and came back to a $100 warning ticket. When I talked to them again, the camp host was downright mean about it. I never got mad. I was just confused and hurt. There is no cell service to reserve once you're there, so it was a total waste of time to drive there. The website says it requires a minimum of 3 days notice to reserve. Despite it being dark when I finally got packed back up to leave and camp still empty, they never let me stay.I enjoy the many different loops there, as I have camped there prior to this whole on-line reservation system. You can make it as easy or as hard as you want. There are bear there, so just be aware of that. - Viola Moran

Sahara Creek DNR Horse Camp Introduce

Nestled in the picturesque landscape near Ashford, Washington, Sahara Creek DNR Horse Camp offers a unique camping experience tailored specifically for equestrian enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers. As a featured campground within the "camping near me" category, Sahara Creek provides a gateway to the stunning trails and natural beauty of the region. While recent user feedback highlights some administrative aspects to be mindful of, the campground itself boasts a range of appealing features and services for those looking to explore the area with their horses.

Embrace the Natural Environment: Sahara Creek DNR Horse Camp is situated amidst the lush forests and rolling terrain characteristic of the Pacific Northwest. The campground provides direct access to an extensive network of trails, catering to various skill levels and offering opportunities for leisurely rides or more challenging treks. The presence of a creek along some trails offers a refreshing water source for both riders and their horses, enhancing the overall experience of exploring the natural surroundings. Be aware that this region is home to wildlife, including bears, so it's essential to practice proper food storage and bear safety precautions during your visit.

Dedicated Equestrian Services and Facilities: This campground is thoughtfully equipped to accommodate horses and their riders. You'll find ample horse trailer parking available, making it convenient to transport your animals. Mounting blocks are provided at various locations, ensuring ease and safety when preparing for your rides. Water sources are strategically placed throughout the campground, allowing you to keep your horses hydrated. For breaks and relaxation, picnic tables are scattered around the area. Additionally, a pavilion offers a communal space, and you might even discover horseshoe pits for some friendly competition.

Explore the Diverse Trail System: One of the standout features of Sahara Creek DNR Horse Camp is its well-maintained and varied trail system. As noted by a returning visitor, the loops offer a range of difficulty levels, allowing you to customize your riding experience to your preferences and your horse's capabilities. Whether you're seeking a gentle stroll through the woods or a more challenging climb with rewarding views, the trails around Sahara Creek provide ample opportunities for exploration and enjoyment.

Beaver Creek Rest Stop: A notable highlight along the trails is Beaver Creek. This area serves as a welcome rest stop for riders and horses alike, especially after tackling some of the more uphill sections. Here, you'll find an outhouse, picnic tables for a relaxing break, and a source of fresh running water specifically for the horses, making it a valuable amenity during longer rides.

Important Considerations Regarding Reservations: Recent feedback from visitors emphasizes a change in the reservation system that local users should be aware of. Unlike some campgrounds where you can instantly view availability and book online, reserving a spot at Sahara Creek DNR Horse Camp may take up to two days to process. It's crucial to plan ahead and initiate the reservation process well in advance of your intended visit. The website reportedly states a minimum of three days' notice for reservations. Additionally, it's important to note that there may be limited or no cell service within the campground, making on-site reservations impossible. It is highly recommended to secure your reservation before traveling to the campground to avoid potential disappointment or being turned away, even if the campground appears to have vacant spots.

Potential Noise from Nearby Gun Range: While the natural beauty and equestrian facilities are significant draws, some visitors have noted the proximity of a gun range. Depending on the day and time, you may hear the sound of gunfire while on certain trails. If noise sensitivity is a concern, this is something to keep in mind when planning your visit.

Promotional Information and Local Appeal: For local users in the "camping near me" category, Sahara Creek DNR Horse Camp presents an excellent opportunity to immerse yourselves in nature with your equine companions without traveling far. The dedicated horse facilities and extensive trail network cater specifically to the needs of horse owners, making it a standout destination in the region. While there isn't specific promotional information available online, the inherent appeal of combining horseback riding with camping in a scenic setting is a strong draw for the local equestrian community. We encourage you to check the official Washington State Parks or Department of Natural Resources website for any current promotions, permit requirements, or updated reservation procedures.

In summary, Sahara Creek DNR Horse Camp offers a valuable resource for local horse owners seeking a camping adventure. The well-maintained trails, dedicated equestrian facilities, and beautiful natural environment provide a rewarding experience. However, it is essential for prospective visitors to be aware of the current reservation process, potential for noise from the nearby gun range, and the need for bear safety precautions to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip. By planning ahead and understanding these aspects, local users can take full advantage of the unique opportunities this campground offers within the "camping near me" category.
