San Antonio / Alamo KOA Holiday Introduce
For local users seeking a "camping near me" experience in the vibrant city of San Antonio, the San Antonio / Alamo KOA Holiday, located at 602 Gembler Rd, San Antonio, TX 78219, USA, offers a compelling option. This campground provides a range of amenities and convenient access to some of the city's most popular attractions, making it a noteworthy consideration for families, RV travelers, and anyone looking for a basecamp while exploring San Antonio.
According to customer reviews, the San Antonio / Alamo KOA Holiday stands out for its cleanliness and meticulous maintenance. One visitor described it as "very clean and well maintained," which is a significant factor for those seeking a comfortable and pleasant camping experience. The helpful and friendly staff also receive high praise, contributing to a positive and welcoming atmosphere for guests. This level of service can greatly enhance a stay, especially for those unfamiliar with the area or needing assistance with their setup.
A notable feature highlighted in the reviews is the well-stocked camp store. One guest even remarked that it was "probably one of the best I have seen at a Koa." A well-equipped camp store can be incredibly convenient for campers, offering essentials, snacks, souvenirs, and potentially even RV supplies, saving travelers a trip into town for necessities. This amenity adds significant value to the overall camping experience.
In terms of the camping sites themselves, one reviewer noted that their site was "fairly level" and that "all hook ups worked without issue." This is crucial for RV travelers who rely on these connections for electricity, water, and sewage. A level site ensures comfort and proper functioning of RV systems, while reliable hookups contribute to a hassle-free stay.
However, the location of the San Antonio / Alamo KOA Holiday is a point of discussion in the reviews. Guests describe the surrounding area as a "rough looking part of town," characterized by a mix of residential and commercial properties, with many houses having security measures like bars on windows and doors. Another reviewer described the location as "very sketchy and in the center of big rig businesses," noting the constant presence of 18-wheelers driving by. These observations are important for local users to consider when evaluating this campground, especially regarding their comfort level with urban surroundings that may not be traditionally scenic.
Despite the less picturesque immediate surroundings, the campground's location boasts a significant advantage: its proximity to downtown San Antonio. Both reviews mention that the River Walk and the Alamo are just a 10-15 minute drive away. This easy access to major tourist attractions is a significant draw for those wanting to explore the historical and cultural heart of San Antonio. The River Walk offers a unique urban experience with its winding waterways, shops, restaurants, and entertainment, while the Alamo is a must-visit historical landmark.
For families, the San Antonio / Alamo KOA Holiday offers several appealing amenities. One reviewer mentioned that their children "loved the playground," providing a dedicated space for kids to burn energy and have fun. Additionally, there was a "football game going on all day long for my boys to take part in," suggesting organized or informal recreational activities within the campground. Another highlight for younger children was the "train ride," described as "super cute," indicating a family-friendly feature that adds to the overall appeal.
The campground also features a "super cute gift shop," which can be a nice addition for picking up souvenirs or small treats. However, one reviewer noted that the "pool was FREEZING and very little shade." This is important information for potential guests, especially those planning to visit during warmer months and hoping to utilize the pool for relaxation and cooling off. The lack of shade could also be a concern during hot Texas days.
Despite the concerns about the surrounding neighborhood and the pool conditions, one reviewer stated, "We will definitely stay here again for a layover if needed." This suggests that the positive aspects of the campground, such as its cleanliness, amenities, and proximity to downtown, outweigh the drawbacks for some travelers, particularly those prioritizing convenience and access to city attractions.
For RV travelers with larger setups, it's worth noting one reviewer's experience with the pull-through spots. They mentioned that the spots were "a little tight to get into because they are all back and forth spots," and their neighbors' parked truck made maneuvering their dually and 45ft 5th wheel challenging. This is valuable information for those with large RVs to consider when booking their stay, perhaps inquiring about the specific layout and size of the pull-through sites.
In summary, the San Antonio / Alamo KOA Holiday offers a mixed bag of features and location attributes. Its strengths lie in its cleanliness, well-maintained facilities, helpful staff, excellent camp store, and convenient access to downtown San Antonio, including the River Walk and the Alamo. It also provides family-friendly amenities like a playground and a train ride. However, potential guests should be aware of the surrounding neighborhood, which is described as "rough" and industrial, and the potentially cold and unshaded pool.
For local users seeking "camping near me" who prioritize access to San Antonio's main attractions and value a clean and well-equipped campground, the San Antonio / Alamo KOA Holiday presents a viable option. The positive aspects of the campground itself seem to compensate for the less desirable immediate surroundings for many visitors. However, it's essential to weigh these factors based on personal preferences and priorities.

San Antonio / Alamo KOA Holiday Reviews
This koa was very clean and well maintained. The staff are helpful and friendly. They also have a well stocked camp store, probably one of the best I have seen at a Koa. The site was fairly level and all hook ups worked without issue. As far as location, this campground is in a rough looking part of town. It’s a mix of residential/commercial with most houses in the area having bars on the windows and doors. On the good side, you are 10-15 minutes away from downtown, the river walk and Alamo.
Apr 28, 2025 · Michael GWe recently stayed here as a layover on our way home. I have to admit, the location is very sketchy and in the center of big rig businesses. There are 18 wheelers driving by all day long. We have a large set up, dually and 45ft 5th wheel. Our pull through spots was a little tight to get into because they are all back and forth spots. So our neighbors had their truck parked right at the edge of the spot we had to pull into. We made it work, barely. However, the grounds were very nice. My kids loved the playground and there was a football game going on all day long for my boys to take part in. My smaller kids loved the train ride. Super cute gift shop. We did not explore the city, we have been there before. The pool was FREEZING and very little shade. We will definitely stay here again for a layover if needed.
Mar 21, 2025 · L HallThis campground was an A+, it is top notch! We don’t usually like many KOAs but this one is special. One of the very best campgrounds so far on all of our journeys. Super new, clean bathrooms and showers, nicely paved, gravel spots, well maintained. This was more like an awesome state park, sites were spacious and there is a very nice bike/pedestrian greenway, Salado Creek Greenway, you can access right from the property. HIGHLY recommend this place if coming to San Antonio, it’s close to everything.
Mar 05, 2025 · Liz LessingI was so impressed with this campground. The staff are friendly, helpful, and hard working. The grounds are clean and well manicured. And the showers were awesome, nice hot water with great water pressure. Lastly they consider people in wheelchairs in thoughtful ways; blacktop roads, well maintained ramps, and fabulous shower rooms with plenty of space.
Mar 20, 2025 · Rosemary PennerThis is a wonderful KOA! The best one we have stayed at! The staff is friendly, great play spaces for the kids, well-kept buildings, a nice cafe, and very clean! Easy in and out for our large rig (45 feet). We highly recommend this campground!
