A Peaceful and Clean Coastal Retreat
The environment at San Mateo Campground is consistently described as peaceful and clean, making it a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. One reviewer from Downtown San Diego referred to it as a "hidden gem" for rest and relaxation, highlighting its accessibility for those seeking a nearby retreat. The quiet atmosphere allows campers to truly unwind and enjoy the natural surroundings. The cleanliness of the campground, including the restrooms and showers, is also a significant plus, contributing to a comfortable and enjoyable stay. The fact that park rangers spray out the bathrooms and showers each morning for sanitization underscores the commitment to maintaining a high standard of cleanliness.
Spacious and Well-Equipped Campsites
Visitors consistently praise the spaciousness of the campsites at San Mateo Campground. This ample space between sites ensures a comfortable level of privacy, allowing campers to feel secluded in their own natural haven. The ground is noted to be flat, making it ideal for setting up tents and even for activities like yoga. Each campsite is well-equipped with essential amenities, including paved parking, a fire pit for campfires and cooking, and a picnic table for outdoor dining and gatherings. The presence of trees at the campsites also provides opportunities for hanging clotheslines, a particularly useful feature for drying wetsuits after a day at the beach.
One minor point to note is that the ground is described as very hard, which might make pounding stakes for tents challenging. Campers planning to pitch tents might want to consider alternative anchoring methods or ensure they have sturdy stakes designed for hard ground.
Excellent Amenities: Showers and Accessibility
San Mateo Campground boasts excellent amenities that enhance the camping experience. The showers are particularly noteworthy, with reviewers raving about the wonderful hot water and great water pressure. These are often highly valued features for campers looking to freshen up after a day of outdoor activities. Additionally, the convenient and easily accessible garbage disposal areas contribute to the overall cleanliness and organization of the campground.
Unbeatable Location for Beach Lovers and Surfers
One of the standout features of San Mateo Campground is its close proximity to San Onofre Beach, a renowned destination for surfing. This makes the campground an ideal base for surf trips, allowing easy access to the waves. The ability to return to a spacious and well-equipped campsite after a day at the beach, with hot showers and the convenience of drying wetsuits overnight, adds significant value for surfers and beachgoers.
Exceptional Hospitality: The Hosts Make the Difference
Beyond the excellent facilities and location, San Mateo Campground is particularly praised for the exceptional hospitality of its campground hosts. One reviewer shared a heartwarming story of being locked out of their RV early in the morning and being rescued by the hosts, Victor and Martha. Their willingness to lend a phone and a jacket, along with their friendly company and treats, turned a potentially stressful situation into a positive experience. This level of care and helpfulness highlights the dedication of the hosts in ensuring a comfortable and welcoming stay for all campers. While hosts may rotate, this positive feedback indicates a culture of excellent service at San Mateo Campground.
Pet-Friendly Camping
The positive experience of one reviewer traveling with their dog recovering from surgery suggests that San Mateo Campground is likely a pet-friendly destination. This is a significant draw for many local users who enjoy camping with their furry companions. The spacious campsites would provide ample room for pets, and the nearby natural areas would offer opportunities for walks (on leash, as per park rules). It is always advisable to confirm the specific pet policies of the campground when making a reservation.

San Mateo Campground Reviews
I live in Downtown San Diego and this hidden gem is a great place for R&R close by.This particular trip I'm enjoying a week of rest and recovery with me and my pup in the RV after she got spayed on Monday (easiest way to keep pets separated during recovery). On Tuesday, I accidentally locked us out of the RV at 6:30am and of course my phone, jacket, keys are all inside.Campground hosts Victor and Martha totally rescued me, letting me borrow their phone and a jacket until I could get my spare brought to me. They gave us good company and treats until my husband arrived. The location is amazing, clean, quiet, and it's beautiful out here but I really just wanted to share a review because the hosts are incredible.I know hosts rotate but I'm glad they'll be here the next few months.
Apr 24, 2025 · Jessica StuartWe love this campground for it's close proximity to surfing at San Onofre Beach. The campsites are spacious with enough space in between and small trees & brush for privacy. Ground is flat for tents & yoga mats, however, pounding stakes into the ground doesn't work due to very hard ground. Each site has paved parking, a fire pit, a picnic table, and trees we were able to use with a clothesline to dry our wetsuits overnight. Garbages are convenient and easy to access. Also the showers have wonderful hot water & great water pressure. The park Rangers spray out all the bathrooms & showers each morning for sanitization. We will definitely be back for our next San Onofre surf trip!
Apr 11, 2025 · Sarah OgrenThe dogs had a nice stay at San Mateo Campground 🐾 Lots of trees & greenery give it a nice “campy” feel ~ sites are a decent size and manage to seem fairly secluded from neighbors! The facilities, bathrooms & showers, were super clean! Water was good and hot! The dogs really enjoyed their walk over the hills, under the highway, and almost to the trestles….which is where the “no dogs on beach” sign became our turn around spot! The trail started at the amphitheater in the campground, where they had a scooper bag station and trash can. It was about 1.5 miles from there to the turn around spot at trestles, which seemed just about perfect for the dogs 🐾
Dec 26, 2024 · Michelle Ewing (Maggie)They sell wood there but no fire starter. Restroom is very clean as well as the shower room. Many kids play balls and ride bikes in the campground.
May 04, 2025 · LilyBathrooms lacked hand soap. Fair warning.Grill and picnic table was provided and there's almost enough parking space per lot for three sedans on average. Also fair warning, SOME of the sites seem a little inconsistent in their sizes for setting up tents. Some lots looks to have room for only one or two 3 person tents.Very short walk (from the campsites numbered 68-100 at least) to the nearby trail to the beach and beyond.Weather wise, it would have been better in just about any other month besides winter. With the heavy fog and overcast sky, not as scenic as it was when I hiked the nearby trail months and months ago.
