Saranac Lake Islands Camp ground Introduce
For local residents seeking an adventurous and unique 'camping near me' experience, the Saranac Lake Islands Campground, located on Saranac Lake, New York (12983, USA), offers an exceptional opportunity to camp on secluded islands within the stunning Adirondack region. This campground distinguishes itself by its accessibility – it is exclusively for those arriving by canoes and cartop boats, as trailers are not permitted at the launch point associated with this specific location mentioned in the reviews.
The very nature of island camping provides an environment unlike typical roadside campgrounds. Saranac Lake, known for its pristine waters and picturesque islands, offers a sense of remoteness and immersion in nature. Campers can expect to be surrounded by the beauty of the lake, with opportunities for paddling, exploring the shoreline, and enjoying the tranquility of an island setting. The sounds of nature, such as loons calling and the gentle lapping of water against the shore, are likely to be prominent features of the environment.
One reviewer who stayed at site number 62 described it as "amazing," highlighting several desirable features. The site was level and offered "plenty of room," suggesting comfortable space for setting up camping gear and enjoying the area. The reviewer also noted the privacy of the site while still being "close to the dock," indicating a balance between seclusion and accessibility to the water. For those planning to bring a boat, the site provided "plenty of room to dock the Pontoon," emphasizing the suitability for various types of watercraft that can be transported via canoe or cartop boat.
The unique access requirement – canoes and cartop boats only – shapes the services and features of this campground. It implies a focus on a more self-sufficient camping experience, where campers are prepared to transport their gear and supplies via water. While the reviews do not explicitly detail services such as restrooms, water sources, or picnic tables on the islands themselves, the mention of a "potty way up in the woods" at site 62 suggests the presence of basic backcountry sanitation facilities. However, the reviewer's reluctance to visit it at night due to its remote location is a point for potential campers to consider.
It is crucial for local users to understand the access point limitations. One review explicitly states that "this location is for launching canoes and cartop boats only. No trailers." This means that those with larger boats requiring trailers will need to find alternative access points to Saranac Lake. Furthermore, this location is "not the best access point for the campground and you cannot check in here for a site."
The review provides essential information regarding check-in and reservations: "Check in and reservations is located a few miles south on route 3 at Second Pond." This indicates that prospective campers must first go to the Second Pond location to register and receive their site assignment before heading to the island access point to launch their boats and reach their chosen island campsite. This two-step process is vital for a smooth and organized camping experience at Saranac Lake Islands Campground.
Given the island setting, the features of the campground are likely centered around the natural environment and the opportunities for water-based activities. Each island campsite may offer varying degrees of privacy, terrain, and access to the lake. Some sites might be more wooded, while others could have more open areas. The availability of docks or suitable landing spots for canoes and cartop boats would also be a key feature of the individual island campsites.
The level and spaciousness of site 62, as mentioned in the review, suggests that at least some of the island campsites are well-suited for comfortable camping. However, the experience may vary from island to island and site to site. Local users who value privacy and a more secluded camping experience will likely find the island setting highly appealing.
Services at Saranac Lake Islands Campground are likely to be more rustic compared to developed campgrounds with vehicle access. Campers should be prepared for a backcountry camping experience, potentially needing to bring their own water purification systems, portable toilets (in addition to or as an alternative to the "potty in the woods"), and all necessary camping gear. Information regarding the availability of trash disposal, fire pits, or designated swimming areas on the islands would be essential for planning a trip.
Promotional information is not included in the provided reviews. Local users interested in camping at Saranac Lake Islands Campground should seek information from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), which manages campgrounds in the Adirondack Park. Their website or a direct phone inquiry would be the best source for details on reservations, fees, rules and regulations, and specific information about the island campsites and available amenities.
To summarize, Saranac Lake Islands Campground offers a unique and adventurous 'camping near me' option for local residents who enjoy paddling and are seeking a secluded island camping experience. Access is limited to canoes and cartop boats, with the launch point mentioned being unsuitable for trailers and not the location for check-in. Check-in and reservations are handled at Second Pond, a few miles south on Route 3. The island campsites, such as the "amazing" site 62, can offer privacy, ample space, and convenient boat docking. However, campers should be prepared for a more rustic experience with basic sanitation facilities and plan to be self-sufficient in terms of supplies and gear. For those looking to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Saranac Lake and enjoy a unique island camping adventure, this campground is well worth exploring through the official channels of the New York State DEC.

Saranac Lake Islands Camp ground Reviews
We stayed at number 62 which was amazing. It was a level spot with plenty of room and very private but close to the dock. Plenty of room to dock the Pontoon. The only complaint was the potty was way up in the woods which I was not brave enough to visit at night.
