Smoky Waters Campground Introduce
For local users seeking a tranquil "camping near me" experience in the gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Smoky Waters Campground, located at 346 Wears Valley Rd, Townsend, TN 37882, USA, offers a welcoming and serene retreat. Situated in Townsend, known as the "Peaceful Side of the Smokies," this campground provides a convenient and quiet base for exploring the natural wonders of the region. Reviews from recent guests consistently praise the accommodating owners, peaceful atmosphere, and excellent location.
One delighted camper who stayed on a creekside site described it as "peaceful and serene." This immediately highlights a key environmental feature of Smoky Waters Campground: its proximity to a creek, offering the soothing sounds of flowing water and a tranquil ambiance. The owners are lauded as "very accommodating and eager to please," indicating a commitment to guest satisfaction and a personal touch that can significantly enhance the camping experience. For those who enjoy the warmth and atmosphere of a campfire, the campground offers portable fire pits upon request, demonstrating their willingness to cater to guests' preferences. Firewood is also available for sale on-site, adding to the convenience.
The location of Smoky Waters Campground is another significant advantage. It is situated off the main street of Lamar Alexander Parkway, which translates to less traffic noise, contributing to the overall peacefulness reported by visitors. Its proximity to Townsend makes it an ideal "hub for exploring GSMNP (Great Smoky Mountains National Park)." One guest who initially booked a two-night stay during the last week of March 2025 was so impressed by the location and convenience that they extended their stay to a total of five nights. This speaks volumes about the campground's appeal and suitability for exploring the national park and the surrounding Townsend area.
The owners, Sheila and her husband, are repeatedly commended for going "above and beyond to ensure their guests are well taken care of." This level of dedication to customer service can make a significant difference in the overall camping experience, fostering a welcoming and supportive environment.
For RV travelers, Smoky Waters Campground offers practical amenities and accessibility. The campground features "full hookups" at its sites, which typically include water, electricity, and sewer connections, providing essential conveniences for RV living. Notably, the campground is "big rig accessible," as evidenced by a guest with a 40' coach conversion and a 24' car trailer (total length 68') who "easily fit in one of the pull through sites," specifically mentioning site P4. This accessibility makes Smoky Waters Campground a viable option for a wide range of RV sizes.
It is important to note that Smoky Waters Campground does not have a bathhouse. However, for RVers utilizing their onboard facilities and benefiting from full hookups, this may not be a significant concern, as highlighted by a guest who stated, "with full hookups on our site this did not bother us at all." Campers relying on bathhouse facilities should consider this aspect when making their decision.
Regarding water pressure, one guest noted that it "seemed a bit higher than other places" and suggested bringing a pressure regulator if this is a concern. However, they also mentioned that it did not cause an issue for them, indicating that while it might be something to be aware of, it is generally manageable.
For those traveling from Knoxville, one guest provided helpful directions via 129 to Maryville and then onto 321 to Townsend, offering a potential route for navigating to the campground.
Beyond the campground itself, the reviews also highlight the attractions and activities available in the Townsend area and within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, further solidifying its appeal as a "camping near me" destination with plenty to explore. Recommended activities include:
- Spruce Flats Falls: A moderate 2-mile round trip hike to a beautiful waterfall, with parking available at the ranger station in Tremont.
- Middle Prong Trailhead: An easy hike along a scenic cascading river/stream, offering flexibility in hiking distance.
- Chimney Tops Trail: A more challenging 3.8-mile round trip hike rewarding with great views of the iconic Chimney Tops (note that access to the very top has been modified due to fire damage, so check current trail conditions).

Smoky Waters Campground Reviews
The owners were very accommodating and eager to please. We stayed on the creekside and it was peaceful and serene. They will bring you a fire pit if you want one. Facility is off the main street of Lamar Alexander Pkwy so much less traffic noise. Great location. We will be back.
Mar 16, 2025 · Karen FreemanSheila and her husband go above and beyond to ensure their guests are well taken care of! We booked 2 nights during the last week of March 2025 in order to use this location as a hub for exploring GSMNP, and we loved it so much and it was so convenient that we ended up staying a total of 5 nights. The location is great; Townsend is truly the quiet side of the Smokies, and the campground is quiet and peaceful with great views all around. They do not have dug in fire pits, but will happily bring you a standalone fire pit if asked, as well as firewood for sale on site. We have a 40' coach conversion with a 24' car trailer for a total length of 68' and we easily fit in one of the pull through sites, site P4 I believe. They do not have a bathhouse, but with full hookups on our site this did not bother us at all. If you are concerned about high water pressure perhaps bring a pressure regulator as the water pressure seemed a bit higher than other places, but this did not cause an issue for us. We came in through Knoxville and took 129 to Maryville where we got on 321 and took that to Townsend. Not only would I recommend Townsend TN as a base to explore the GSMNP, but I would highly recommend staying at Smoky Waters Campground. Thank you Sheila!Things to do in the area:-Spruce Flats Falls - moderate hike to a great waterfall, approx 2 miles round trip. Park at the ranger station in Tremont-Middle Prong Trail head - easy hike along a cascading river/stream, hike as far in as you'd like-Chimney Tops Trail - moderate hike(be ready for a good workout) with a great view of Chimney Tops, 3.8 miles round tripLuftee Overlook - beautiful Overlook of the valley, and far less busy than the Newfound Gap parking lot-Peaceful Side Social - local tap house and outdoor seating/play area for kids with great beer from their brewery in Maryville TN
