South Newport Campground Introduce
For local residents and travelers seeking a tranquil "camping near me" option in the scenic coastal region of Georgia, South Newport Campground in Townsend presents a quant and quiet retreat. Located at 21782 US-17, this campground offers a back-to-basics camping experience characterized by its peaceful atmosphere, wooded sites, and the renowned southern hospitality of its owner, Cindy. If you appreciate a no-frills environment focused on the essentials and a welcoming host, South Newport Campground might be the perfect spot for your next getaway or longer stay.
A Quiet Oasis in Coastal Georgia: South Newport Campground is consistently described as a "very quant quiet place to stay." This emphasis on tranquility suggests an environment where you can truly relax and escape the hustle and bustle. Situated off the main highway, it offers a serene setting amidst the natural beauty of coastal Georgia. For those seeking respite and a peaceful camping experience, this campground appears to provide just that ambiance.
Southern Charm and Hospitality: The owner, Cindy, is a standout feature of South Newport Campground, described as "the meaning of southern charm and hospitality." This personal touch can significantly enhance the camping experience, making guests feel welcome and well-cared for. The willingness of the owner to address any issues quickly further underscores a commitment to guest satisfaction and a hands-on approach to managing the campground.
Ideal for Long-Term RV Stays: One reviewer specifically sought a month-long stay for their 37ft toy hauler and found South Newport Campground to be a suitable solution. This suggests that the campground is accommodating to longer-term stays, particularly for RV travelers. The fact that their RV was parked under a "250 year old southern live oak tree" highlights the beautiful and natural backdrop that the campground offers, providing a picturesque setting for full-time RVing or extended visits.
Back to Basics Camping with Great Connectivity: South Newport Campground is characterized as "zero fancy, back to the basic kinda of camping." This implies a focus on the fundamental aspects of camping without an abundance of elaborate amenities. However, a notable exception is the availability of "great internet," which can be a significant advantage for travelers needing to stay connected. This combination of a simple, natural environment with reliable internet access offers a balanced experience for those who appreciate both the outdoors and connectivity.
Wooded Sites in a Natural Setting: Guests can expect "nice wooded sites with a carpet of pine needles, leaves and dirt." This description evokes a natural and rustic camping environment, where you are surrounded by the beauty of the Georgia landscape. The shade provided by the trees can also be a welcome feature, especially during warmer months. While the sites offer a natural ground cover, it's important to note that this is part of the no-frills, back-to-basics approach.
Pull-Thru Sites with Full Hookups: For RVs, the campground offers pull-thru sites, with one reviewer noting that site #7 had "plenty of room" for a 39-foot 5th wheel and truck. This ease of access is particularly beneficial for larger rigs. Additionally, the availability of 50A and 30A sites indicates that the campground provides electrical hookups to accommodate different RV power needs. The reviewer also mentioned depositing payment for their 50A site in a drop box, suggesting a straightforward and potentially self-service payment system.
Convenient Location Near I-95: While the campground itself is described as quiet and off a small town highway (US-17), it is also conveniently located "a couple miles off 95." This proximity to a major interstate highway makes it an easily accessible stop for travelers passing through the region. The balance of a quiet setting with convenient highway access is a significant advantage for those on the road.
Limited Amenities: No Laundry or Bathrooms: It is crucial to note that South Newport Campground has "no laundry or bathroom facilities." This is a significant aspect of its "no thrills camping" nature and means that guests must be self-sufficient in these areas. RVers with onboard facilities will be well-suited to this campground, while tent campers will need to plan accordingly for restroom and hygiene needs elsewhere.
Sweet Host and Reservation Process: Even without meeting her in person, one reviewer described Miss Cindy as "sweet on the phone" during the reservation and confirmation process. This positive interaction highlights the friendly and welcoming nature of the host, even in remote communications. The reservation process seems simple, though specific details beyond phone contact are not provided.
Ideal for a Quiet Night Stopover: One reviewer who stayed for a single night found the campground to be "fine for a night stop over" due to its quiet area. They also indicated a willingness to stay again during future travels. This suggests that South Newport Campground is a reliable and peaceful option for those needing a break during a longer journey.
Your Peaceful Coastal Getaway: If you are seeking a "camping near me" experience that prioritizes peace, a natural wooded setting, and the charm of southern hospitality, South Newport Campground in Townsend, GA, offers just that. While it may lack the elaborate amenities of some larger resorts, its focus on the basics, coupled with the attentive care of the owner and the convenience of full hookups and great internet, makes it a hidden gem for those who appreciate a simpler, quieter camping experience. South Newport Campground Reviews
This is a very quant quiet place to stay. Owner Cindy is the meaning of southern charm and hospitality. We were looking desperately for a place for a month to stay in our 37ft toy hauler, while my wife finishes out her travel contract at the hospital in Brunswick. Luckily we found this campground .. zero fancy, back to the basic kinda of camping with great internet. Any issue, Owner is right there to make sure all things are resolved quickly. Our rv was parked under a 250 year old southern live oak tree, beautiful backdrop for full time RVing. This place is definitely a hidden gem on old hwy 17.. No thrills camping.
Jan 07, 2023 · Happy CamperNice wooded sites with a carpet of pine needles, leaves and dirt. My pull thru site (#7) had plenty of room for my 39 foot 5th wheel and truck, however, it was very tight between campers. It's located a couple miles off 95. I had 2 to 3 (T-Mobile) bars. No laundry or bathroom facilities here. Miss Cindy was sweet on the phone making and later confirming the reservation. I never met her in person though. Just deposited $30 for our 50A site in the drop box at the entrance ($25 for 30A). I thought it was fine for a night stop over as it was a very quiet area. And I would stay here again on my travels.
Jan 01, 2020 · Jim JacksonI was weary of going here based on other reviews but decided to give it a try…. KEEP DRIVING! Bypass this place if you can help it!!! Seems to be all long term renters with just a couple spots available. Paid and reserved online and filled out all the information correctly. Arrived, waited at office for several minutes for directions, no one came out. Found the site we were supposed to be in. Parked and hooked up, started to make dinner and then was called by the owner and told we needed to leave because we were in a converted school bus. No where on the website did it say that and no one was even there to check us in when we arrived. We paid and fulfilled our part of the contract and we were discriminated upon because of our type of RV. Which is very clean, self contained and in very good operating order. So we were made to leave as it was getting dark after being on the road all day. I know they couldn’t have legally made us leave due to a signed agreement… We didn’t want to stay in a place that we weren’t welcome. They tried to make us leave without giving our money back. Finally after explaining that I would not leave until I received my money, and them finally giving us our payment back, we went on to stay at a really nice campground about an hour south. There are many other nice places to stay, DEFINITELY, choose another option.
