Squaw Creek Campground

Avery, ID 83802, USA

4.0
We didn't stay at this campground, just checked it out on our way home from another place. There were 7 camp sites and no one there when we went. Only 1 site was near the river. It had a steep path down to the water. The other 6 camp sites were on the other side of the road so they didn't have a view or access to the river. All felt a bit exposed - not many trees or shrubs. Someone had left a lot of trash - cans, plastic bottles, etc. - DB

Squaw Creek Campground Introduce

For local residents in Idaho and the surrounding areas searching for "camping near me," Squaw Creek Campground near Avery, Idaho, presents a small and potentially secluded option. Located in the scenic region of Avery, this campground appears to offer a limited number of campsites with varying degrees of access to Squaw Creek. Based on the single but informative customer review available, it's essential for potential local users to be aware of the campground's layout, limited riverside access, and reported issues with trash. This introduction aims to provide an objective overview of Squaw Creek Campground based on the available information, allowing local campers to make an informed decision.

Environment: Riverside Setting with Limited Direct Access

Squaw Creek Campground is situated near Avery, Idaho, suggesting a location within the natural beauty of northern Idaho, likely characterized by forests and the presence of Squaw Creek. The review indicates that the creek is a notable feature, with one campsite being located near the river. The sound of flowing water and the potential for riverside relaxation are often attractive aspects of such campgrounds.

However, the review also highlights a significant limitation: only one of the seven campsites is directly adjacent to the river. This prime riverside spot reportedly has a "steep path down to the water," which might be a consideration for families with young children or individuals with mobility issues. The other six campsites are located on the opposite side of the road, meaning they do not offer a view of or direct access to Squaw Creek. This separation from the water could be a significant drawback for those specifically seeking a riverside camping experience.

Furthermore, the reviewer noted that all the campsites "felt a bit exposed - not many trees or shrubs." This lack of vegetation could mean limited shade during hot summer months and less privacy between campsites. Campers who value a more secluded and shaded camping experience might find this aspect of Squaw Creek Campground less appealing.

The presence of Squaw Creek itself suggests the potential for riparian vegetation along its banks, even if the campsites lack significant tree cover. The overall environment is likely one of a forested area with a creek flowing nearby, but with limited direct integration of most campsites with the water.

Services and Amenities: Likely Basic and Limited

Based on the small size of the campground (only seven campsites) and the lack of detailed information about amenities, it is reasonable to assume that Squaw Creek Campground offers basic and potentially limited services. Typical amenities at such small, possibly more remote campgrounds might include:

  • Campsites: Seven individual campsites are mentioned, with varying proximity and access to the creek. The nature of these sites (tent-only or suitable for small RVs) is not specified.
  • Toilet Facilities: A small campground like this is likely to have vault toilets (pit toilets) for sanitation. The condition and maintenance are unknown.
  • Water Access: The availability of potable water is not mentioned in the review. Campers should be prepared to bring their own water or have a way to purify water from the creek if permitted and safe.
  • Fire Rings: It is likely that each campsite would have a fire ring or a designated area for campfires, assuming local regulations allow them.
  • Picnic Tables: Campsites typically include a picnic table.
  • Parking: Limited parking adjacent to the campsites is expected.
  • Trash Disposal: The review unfortunately notes that "someone had left a lot of trash - cans, plastic bottles, etc." This suggests a potential issue with trash management or irresponsible behavior by previous visitors. Local users should be prepared to pack out all their trash and perhaps even be willing to help maintain the cleanliness of the area.

Given the limited number of sites and the lack of mention of any advanced facilities, campers should expect a more rustic and self-sufficient camping experience at Squaw Creek Campground.

Features and Activities: Primarily Focused on the Creek

The primary potential feature of Squaw Creek Campground is its proximity to Squaw Creek, which could offer opportunities for:

  • Riverside Relaxation: For the fortunate campers at the single riverside site, the creek offers a chance to relax by the water.
  • Fishing: Depending on local regulations and fish populations, Squaw Creek might offer fishing opportunities.
  • Wildlife Viewing: Creekside environments often attract wildlife. Campers might have the chance to observe local fauna.
  • Cooling Off: On a hot day, the creek might offer a place to cool off, although the steep path to the water at the riverside site should be considered.

Beyond the creek, the location near Avery, Idaho, suggests that the campground is situated within a larger area known for its natural beauty and outdoor recreational opportunities. The St. Joe River is also nearby, which is a popular destination for boating, fishing, and scenic drives. Campers at Squaw Creek Campground might use it as a base to explore the wider region, including:

  • St. Joe River: Access for fishing, boating, and enjoying the scenic river.
  • Hiking Trails: The Avery area likely offers hiking trails through the surrounding forests.
  • Scenic Drives: The roads in this part of Idaho often provide beautiful views of the mountains and forests.
  • Wildlife Viewing: The forests and rivers of northern Idaho are home to a variety of wildlife.

However, the review does not mention any specific features or attractions directly within or immediately adjacent to Squaw Creek Campground itself, aside from the creek.

Promotional Information and Important Considerations for Local Campers

For local residents in Idaho and nearby areas looking for a "camping near me" option near Avery, Squaw Creek Campground offers a very small and basic campsite along Squaw Creek. If you are specifically seeking a riverside camping experience, be aware that only one of the seven sites offers this directly, albeit with a steep path down to the water. The other six sites are across the road and lack direct creek access or views.

Potential local users should also be aware of the reported lack of trees and shrubs, which could result in exposed and less private campsites. Additionally, the observation of significant trash left by previous visitors is a concerning factor regarding the campground's upkeep and the responsibility of its users. If you choose to camp here, be prepared for a potentially less developed site and make a commitment to leaving no trace and perhaps even helping to clean up any existing litter.

Given its small size and the limitations mentioned in the review, Squaw Creek Campground might be best suited for individuals or small groups who prioritize proximity to the Avery area or are looking for a very basic and potentially quiet (given the lack of other campers at the time of the review) camping experience. However, the limited direct riverside access for most sites and the reported trash issue are significant drawbacks that should be carefully considered.

Before deciding to camp at Squaw Creek Campground, local users should consider the following:

  • Riverside Access: If camping by the river is a priority, be aware that only one site offers this, with a steep path.
  • Shade and Privacy: Expect limited shade and privacy at most campsites due to a lack of trees and shrubs.
  • Trash Situation: Be prepared for the possibility of encountering trash and commit to packing out all of your own waste. Consider bringing extra trash bags to help clean up if needed.
  • Amenities: Expect very basic amenities, likely including vault toilets and possibly picnic tables and fire rings. Water availability is uncertain.
  • Alternative Options: Explore other campgrounds in the Avery and St. Joe River area, as they might offer more amenities, better riverside access, or a cleaner environment.
  • Small Group Size: Given the limited number of sites, this campground is best suited for individuals or small groups.
  • Quiet Atmosphere: The lack of other campers at the time of the review suggests it might be a quiet location, which could be a positive for some.

Squaw Creek Campground offers a very limited and potentially less desirable "camping near me" option based on the available information. Local users should carefully weigh the limited riverside access, lack of shade and privacy, and the reported trash issue against the potential for a quiet and basic camping experience in the Avery area. Exploring alternative campgrounds in the region is highly recommended.
