Packsaddle Campground Introduce
For local users in the "camping near me" category seeking a small and intimate riverside camping experience in northern Idaho, Packsaddle Campground near Avery offers a unique option. Located directly on the river, this first-come, first-served campground features only two campsites. While its very limited number of sites means availability can be unpredictable, its beautiful location and suitability for small groups or families camping together make it a noteworthy spot for those who value a secluded and scenic setting.
The Picturesque Riverside Environment near Avery:
Packsaddle Campground's primary environmental feature is its location "right on the river." This promises a camping experience with the soothing sounds of flowing water, potential for fishing or water play (depending on river conditions and regulations), and scenic riverside views. The presence of "plenty of shady trees" is another significant environmental benefit, suggesting that even with limited sites, campers can expect some relief from the sun, particularly during warmer months. The surrounding area near Avery, Idaho, is likely characterized by the forests and natural beauty of the northern Idaho Panhandle. Rivers in this region often support trout and other fish species, making riverside camping appealing to anglers. The combination of river access and shade creates a potentially idyllic setting for a relaxing camping getaway. While the reviews mention the campsites being "pretty close to the road," they also note that it is "not a super busy road," suggesting that while some road noise might be present, it is unlikely to be overly disruptive to the enjoyment of the natural surroundings.
Services and Amenities: Limited Due to Size:
Given that Packsaddle Campground only has two campsites, the range of services and amenities is likely to be limited compared to larger campgrounds. The reviews do not explicitly mention specific amenities such as picnic tables, fire rings, or restroom facilities. It is reasonable to assume that at least basic fire pits or areas for campfires would be present, as these are common in most campgrounds, especially those in more natural settings. Picnic tables might be available at the individual sites, but this is not confirmed. Information regarding the availability of potable water is also absent, so campers should likely plan to bring their own water supply or a means to purify water from the river if they intend to use it (following appropriate safety guidelines). Restroom facilities could range from vault toilets to no facilities at all, given the campground's small size. Local users considering camping at Packsaddle should be prepared for a more self-sufficient camping experience due to the limited infrastructure typically associated with very small, first-come, first-served campgrounds. For any camping supplies or gear, the town of Avery, while small, might offer basic necessities, or nearby larger towns would have more extensive options under the "camping near me" category.
Key Features: Riverside Location and Intimate Setting:
The most significant feature of Packsaddle Campground is its location directly on the river, offering immediate access to the water and its associated recreational and aesthetic benefits. The extremely small size, with only two campsites, is another key feature. While this limits availability, it also creates a very private and intimate camping experience, especially for those fortunate enough to secure a site. The proximity of the two campsites to each other could be a major advantage for families or friends who want to camp together, allowing for easy interaction and shared space. The presence of plenty of shady trees enhances the comfort of the campsites, particularly during hot summer days. The first-come, first-served nature of the campground means that reservations are not possible, adding an element of spontaneity to a potential visit. For local users seeking a quiet and scenic riverside spot for a small group, Packsaddle Campground's unique characteristics could be highly appealing.
Potential Drawbacks and Considerations:
The most significant potential drawback of Packsaddle Campground is its extremely limited availability due to having only two campsites. This makes it a less reliable option for those who cannot arrive early or are traveling during peak season. The proximity of the campsites to the road, while reportedly not a busy road, could still result in some traffic noise that might detract from the otherwise natural setting. The lack of explicitly mentioned amenities such as picnic tables, fire rings, and restroom facilities means that campers need to be prepared for a more primitive experience. The absence of information about water availability necessitates bringing an adequate supply. The first-come, first-served policy means there is no guarantee of securing a site, requiring flexibility in travel plans. For larger groups needing more than two campsites, Packsaddle Campground would not be a suitable option.
Exploring the Avery, Idaho Region:
Avery, Idaho, and the surrounding area in the St. Joe River Valley offer a wealth of natural beauty and outdoor recreational opportunities. The St. Joe River is known for its pristine waters and excellent fishing. The area is also popular for hiking, with numerous trails winding through the forests of the Idaho Panhandle National Forests. Wildlife viewing is another common activity, with opportunities to see deer, elk, and various bird species. The historic Route of the Hiawatha, a scenic bike trail following an old railroad grade through tunnels and over trestles, is a significant attraction in the region and is typically accessible within a reasonable driving distance from Avery. Local businesses in Avery and nearby towns might cater to outdoor enthusiasts, providing supplies or services related to fishing, hiking, and biking, thus falling under the "camping near me" category for those seeking related goods and services.
Information on Potential Promotions:
Given its very small size and first-come, first-served nature, Packsaddle Campground is unlikely to have specific promotional offers or discounts. Campgrounds of this type, especially those managed by public agencies (which is likely the case for a "Forest Service" type campground in this area, although not explicitly stated), typically operate on a straightforward fee structure if fees are charged at all. The reviews do not mention any fees, which could indicate that it is a free camping area, further reducing the likelihood of promotions. Local businesses in Avery or surrounding areas might offer packages or discounts on related services or goods (such as fishing gear rentals or guided tours) to those camping in the vicinity. Campers seeking such information should explore local resources and businesses listed under "camping near me" in the Avery area.
Conclusion: An Intimate Riverside Retreat for Small Groups:
Packsaddle Campground near Avery, Idaho, offers a unique and intimate riverside camping experience for local users seeking a quiet and scenic getaway. Its location directly on the river and the presence of shady trees create an appealing natural setting. The campground's extremely small size, with only two first-come, first-served campsites, makes it ideal for small families or groups of friends wanting to camp together. However, the limited availability and potentially basic amenities mean that campers need to be prepared for a more self-sufficient experience and understand the unpredictable nature of securing a site. For those who prioritize a beautiful riverside location and a secluded atmosphere for a small group, Packsaddle Campground, if available, could be a hidden gem within the "camping near me" options in northern Idaho.

Packsaddle Campground Reviews
Probably shouldn't rate this because it's a 1st come 1st served campsite. But it's a great site right on the river. My grandkids loved it as well as my Chesapeake retriever.
Aug 02, 2023 · Tim RayWe didn't stay in this campground - we just checked it out for future reference. This campground only has 2 sites. They are very close together which could be great for families and friends who want to camp together. Its a beautiful location, right on the river, with plenty of shady trees. The camp sites are also pretty close to the road, but its not a super busy road, so should be fine.
