Located in the scenic region of Avery, Idaho 83802, USA, this campground provides a basecamp for exploring the stunning landscape and enjoying the recreational opportunities along the St. Joe River. While specific details like phone numbers or promotional offers are unavailable in the provided information, the customer reviews offer valuable insights into the environment, services, and features of Tin Can Flat Campground for those considering it for their next camping trip.
The Picturesque Riverside Environment
The reviews consistently highlight the beautiful environment of Tin Can Flat Campground. Situated along a "great stretch of the St Joe," the campground offers a picturesque setting for nature lovers. Campers can expect well-shaded campsites, suggesting relief from the summer heat under the canopy of trees. The proximity to the river is a significant draw, with some campsites offering views of the water. While direct beach access for swimming may be limited, the opportunity for a short walk to the river through tall grass provides a direct connection to this natural feature. The St. Joe River itself enhances the ambiance, offering the soothing sounds of flowing water and opportunities for various riverside activities. The overall environment appears to be one of natural beauty and tranquility, making it an appealing destination for those seeking a peaceful "camping near me" experience.
Services and Amenities Available
Based on the available customer reviews, the services and amenities at Tin Can Flat Campground appear to be somewhat basic. Key points regarding services include:
- Bathrooms: The bathrooms are mentioned in both reviews. One reviewer noted that they were "maintained adequately," suggesting a basic level of upkeep. However, the other reviewer described the toilets as "disgusting," indicating potential inconsistencies in cleanliness or maintenance frequency. This discrepancy highlights the importance of being prepared for varying conditions of the facilities.
- No Camp Host: Both reviews explicitly state that there is no camp host present at Tin Can Flat Campground. This means that campers should be self-sufficient and prepared to handle any issues or questions on their own. The absence of a host also implies a potentially less structured or supervised environment.
- Maintenance: One review suggests that maintenance crews "must not come through very often," particularly in relation to the cleanliness of the toilets. This reinforces the idea of a more rustic and potentially less frequently serviced campground.
- Campsite Privacy: One positive aspect highlighted is the "lots of privacy between spots" and that campsites are "reasonably well spaced and private." This suggests that campers can enjoy a sense of seclusion and personal space at their individual sites.
- River Access: Most campsites offer a "short walk to the water through tall grass," providing relatively easy access to the St. Joe River for those interested in riverside activities or simply enjoying the view.
It's important for potential visitors to note the absence of a camp host and the potentially inconsistent bathroom cleanliness when planning their trip to Tin Can Flat Campground. Self-sufficiency and a preparedness for basic amenities seem to be key considerations.
Features and Recreational Opportunities
Tin Can Flat Campground appears to offer a range of features and recreational opportunities primarily centered around its natural setting:
- Riverside Location on the St Joe River: The campground's prime location directly on the St. Joe River is a significant feature, offering opportunities for fishing right behind the campsites, as mentioned in one review. The river also contributes to the overall scenic beauty of the area.
- Hiking Opportunities Nearby: One review explicitly mentions "tons of hiking nearby," making Tin Can Flat Campground a potentially excellent basecamp for exploring the surrounding trails and natural landscapes of the Avery, ID region. The specific trails and their difficulty levels are not detailed, so further research on local hiking options would be beneficial for those interested.
- Privacy Between Campsites: The "lots of privacy between spots" and "reasonably well spaced and private" campsites are a notable feature, offering a more secluded and peaceful camping experience compared to campgrounds with closely packed sites.
- Wildlife Viewing: Being situated in a natural area along a river, there is a potential for wildlife viewing, although this is not explicitly mentioned in the reviews. Campers should be aware of local wildlife and take appropriate precautions.
While swimming in the river is described as "not the best" and there is "no beach," the campground's strengths lie in its beautiful riverside location, the privacy offered by the campsites, and the proximity to numerous hiking trails. These features make it particularly appealing to those who prioritize a natural and secluded camping experience with opportunities for fishing and hiking over swimming or beach activities.
Points to Consider Based on Reviews
The customer reviews provide valuable insights but also highlight some potential drawbacks that local users should consider:
- Lack of Camp Host: The absence of a camp host means campers will need to be entirely self-reliant and prepared for any situations that may arise. There will be no on-site authority figure for assistance or information.
- Inconsistent Bathroom Cleanliness: The conflicting reports on bathroom cleanliness suggest that the condition of these facilities may vary and might not always meet everyone's standards. Campers may want to bring their own sanitation supplies.
- Limited Swimming Opportunities: If swimming is a high priority, Tin Can Flat Campground may not be the best choice due to the lack of a beach and the river not being ideal for swimming.
- Potential for Tall Grass Near River: While providing river access, the "tall grass" mentioned in one review might be a consideration for those with mobility issues or concerns about insects.
Despite these points, the positive aspects of the campground, such as its beautiful location, riverside access, privacy between sites, and proximity to hiking, may outweigh these drawbacks for many seeking a natural "camping near me" experience.

Tin Can Flat Campground Reviews
Nice campground. No host. Bathrooms maintained adequately. Lots of privacy between spots and some have views of the river. Most have a short walk to the water through tall grass. No beach and not the best for swimming but absolutely beautiful and tons of hiking nearby.
Jun 06, 2023 · DavisThe location is beautiful - well-shaded on great stretch of the St Joe. Campsites are reasonably well spaced and private. Good fishing right behind it. Toilets were disgusting, though. There is no host and maintenance crews must not come through very often
Sep 03, 2022 · Kevin BrannonWe stayed 2 nights in early Sept 2020. Lots of trees and shrubs that provide shade and privacy between camp sites. Its close to the road, but there's not a lot of traffic on the road and there's enough trees and shrubs to create a sound barrier, so its pretty quiet. This campground does not have a host, so it was a bit filthy. When we arrived, we had to pick up 2 different piles of dog poop, used kleenex, etc in our camp site. There was a diaper in the cooking grill. The bathrooms weren't very clean - used TP on the floor. Also, most of the camp sites do not have a view of the river or just a glimpse of the river through the trees. There are some paths to the water, but they are narrow and uneven. That said, once we picked up the trash, it was a nice, peaceful place to camp. I think this may be the best campground in the area. We saw a pileated woodpecker in the campground one morning.
