South Fork Campground

UT-39, Huntsville, UT 84317, USA

4.0
This campground was great! The host was nice and did his job. I saw some complaints about the bathrooms stinking, but if everyone followed the rules it wouldn’t be that bad. You’re supposed to close the toilet lid and keep the door closed, but no one seems to be able to follow that. The spots were clean and kept well! We had a great time and will definitely be returning. - Mia Archer

Services and Features

South Fork Campground provides a range of facilities designed to support a comfortable camping experience. Key features include:

  • Campsites: The campground offers 35 single sites, each with a capacity for 8 people and 1 vehicle, and 8 double sites, accommodating 16 people and 2 vehicles. Each site is equipped with a picnic table, a cement table pad, and a fire ring for campfires. The sites have gravel spurs and roads. Firewood is typically available for purchase from the on-site Campground Host.
  • Restrooms and Water: Vault toilets are available and maintained. Drinking water is provided at the campground, which is an essential amenity for campers. While some past reviews have mentioned issues with bathroom cleanliness and odor, it's often attributed to campers not following rules such as keeping toilet lids closed and doors shut. The general expectation is for clean and well-maintained facilities when rules are followed.
  • Campground Host: An on-site Campground Host (typically located at site 21 near the entrance) is available to assist campers, provide information, and ensure rules are followed. Their presence contributes to the management and safety of the campground.
  • Pet-Friendly: South Fork Campground is pet-friendly, allowing dogs on a leash (not exceeding six feet) at all times. Owners are responsible for cleaning up after their pets, and there's a limit of two dogs per site. Specific rules regarding pet behavior (e.g., no rushing, threatening, or attacking people/animals) are in place to ensure the safety and comfort of all campers.
  • Quiet Hours: To maintain a peaceful environment, quiet hours are enforced from 10:00 PM to 8:00 AM. Generators are not allowed after 10:00 PM.
  • Accessibility: The campground is generally accessible, with accessible picnic tables and drinking water. Specific accessible campsites should be confirmed through the reservation system.
Recreational Activities

The proximity to the South Fork Ogden River makes water-based activities highly popular at the campground. Campers rave about the "great river access."

  • Fishing: The South Fork Ogden River is an excellent spot for fishing, drawing anglers to its banks.
  • Tubing and Swimming: "Tubing down the South Fork Ogden River" is a very popular activity, with a life jacket required for all tubers. Swimming in the river is also enjoyed by visitors.
  • Hiking and Mountain Biking: Several hiking and mountain biking trails begin in the area surrounding the campground, offering opportunities to explore the beautiful forest landscape on foot or by bike.
  • Wildlife Viewing: The regular presence of moose and deer allows for wildlife viewing opportunities within the campground itself.

Pineview Reservoir, a short drive away, offers more boating, fishing, and swimming. Causey Reservoir is also nearby for canoeing and fishing.
Promotional Information and Considerations

South Fork Campground promotes itself as an ideal destination for those seeking a tranquil and activity-rich camping experience in the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. Its key selling points are the beautiful river access, abundant outdoor recreation opportunities, and a serene natural setting. While not an "RV park" in the sense of offering full hookups and extensive recreational vehicle specific amenities, it is highly suitable for RVers who are self-contained or prefer a more rustic camping experience with basic facilities.

For individuals and families searching for "camping near me" who appreciate nature and outdoor activities, South Fork Campground is a strong option. Prospective campers should note the following:

  • Reservations: It is highly recommended to make reservations in advance, especially during peak season, through Recreation.gov. Reservations must generally be made at least 4-5 days ahead of arrival and can be booked up to 6 months in advance. Some sites are also available on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Fees: Fees vary, with single sites typically around $29.00 per night and double sites around $58.00 per night. Day use is $15.00, and extra vehicles incur a $10.00 fee. Firewood is $9.00.
  • Connectivity: Cell service may be limited or unavailable directly at the campground, though it can often be found a few miles down the road.
  • Rules Compliance: Adhering to campground rules, especially regarding quiet hours, generator use, and bathroom etiquette, is crucial for a positive experience for all.
  • Bear Country: The campground is in bear country, so proper food storage and trash disposal are mandatory to avoid attracting wildlife.

Overall, South Fork Campground offers a memorable natural escape with plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventure and relaxation, making it a highly recommended choice for campers in the Huntsville, UT area.
